If anyone could make us a great open world game it would be Rockstar. Set in the futuristic world of vice city.
What do you guys think?

Standard Deluxe 59

They probably could make a good futuristic game, but I think they're better off with sticking with the present or going to the past. If they did go that route, it should be its own series rather than GTA 2077.

If you think about it there are few open-world games that are actually grounded. Most of them are trying to go in the opposite direction of R*. So it doesn't make much sense for R* to change their formula and make a futuristic fantansy city with flying cars and such.

Hell no, if Rockstar makes Vice City it should only take place in late 20th century or early 21st century

Yeah man and it sucks for me. It seems that all the open world games we've gotten recently have been Apocalyptic/zombies/fantasy/superheroes/futuristic etc. I just want a grounded open world game with guns, shooting like GTA does There are way too many of these Apocalyptic/zombies/fantasy/superheroes/futuristic open world games and I'm getting sick and tired of them. I think a lot of devs just don't want to be or are afraid of being compared to Rockstar well no sh*t it's bound to happen but like get over it put some confidence in your work and maybe it can stand on it's own and even surpass Rockstar and even if it doesn't they should be proud it came near Rockstar level.

this might sound lame to someone, especially if they dont like Indiana Jones movies, but what about some kind of open world Indiana Jones game? that could be cool if done right.

No

We already have uncharted and Tomb Raider for that.

F**k that.

I also am yearning for a grounded, realistic open world game which doesn't involve zombies, apocalyptic setting or lazer guns.

I understand but it would be something R* could excel that compared to what cdpr brought us, also not to mention it would be something completely new to what they always bring. Doesn't have to be 100% futuristic. Only some things.

So like GTA Online then? What we have right now with flying cars and jets and sh*t. No. We already have that and I personally don't want that anymore keep that to Online only and we also had GTA 2 as well which was also futuristic so R* technically has done it before so we don't need to see it again.

They are the same trust me. Also there's another problem in gaming every game under the sun has open world elements these days when they don't need to be open world. An Indiana Jones style game is best suited to be linear not open world.

I think it would be a similar case to what Ubisoft did with Assassin's Creed which is taking a well established franchise and turning it into something completely new instead of making a new IP.

I would love a sci-fi Rockstar game my self but I would much prefer it to be something new and original for them and not a GTA game retrofitted into a sci-fi setting.

No.

Modern day or the past. I don’t have a problem with sci-fi and/or futuristic games, but I don’t think it would be a good fit for the GTA series.

GTAO already makes me cringe with its futuristic crap.

OP makes a good point IMO - I've been having similar thoughts. With regards to GTA 6/GTA in general I think that should stay either present day or past time frames - But I would absolutely love to see what Rockstar could do with a third person open world game in a future time setting, I'd be very open to them coming out with a new IP set in the future.

Considering all of the futuristic content they've added to Online over the years, it seems like they're fairly interested in 'the future'

Hummm It could work if R* made a new IP instead of making GTA cyberpunk, but I used GTA because R* is so good at what they do from NPC and cops and how they use the world in way that CDPR could only dream of.

Just imagine if it was R* that made cyberpunk 2077? I would be way better, not considering the rpg elements of the game, but I'm sure they would manage it. Every time I see Cyberpunk 2077 it reminds me of GTA games just not as great. The story is amazing but it still doesn't live up to what was promised or could be of R* made it.

I'm not so sure. No one does living breathing cities better than Rockstar, but an open world city with driving and shooting is largely where the similarities between GTA and Cyberpunk end. They are vastly different experiences and while I would be very curious my self to see what a Rockstar RPG would look like there's no guarantee that they'd knock it out of the park first go.

Many devs have stuttered once they've stepped outside their comfort zone, there's typically a reason why studios recruit highly experienced developers who have worked on genres they're trying to tap into, but even that is no guarantee of success.

It's simple. I see somebody mention Grand Theft Auto set in the future, not to mention some weird-ass cyberpunk future, I puke.

Yeah I guess. Weird seeing cdpr f*cking cyberpunk so bad when they did so well with the witcher.

We already have it, it's called GTA Online because as far as I know there are no flying broomsticks or orbital cannons in our world.

Space Cowboy

GTA Online has nothing to do with Cyberpunk genre at all. A few flying vehicles, military equipment and whatnot aren't what makes cyberpunk what it is. While it's very difficult to pinpoint what exactly cyberpunk can be, it would generally be a setting of high-tech society that is dominated by megacorporations, AI, androids, people who are becoming one with technology etc. with a strong focus on psychological themes other than things GTA as we know it today is characterized by. To get an idea what cyberpunk is you can watch, for example, Ghost in the shell. Cyberpunk isn't about putting some futuristic tools in the game.

I don't think GTA game is suited for this type of a story and setting. GTA 2 was close to that, but it's clear that it has been more of an experimental title before GTA truly found its identity in the III era. But I still think that Rockstar could pursue a game in a futuristic setting if they have a unique idea (cyberpunk or not). It just shouldn't be a GTA. Whether they want to is another story though...they seem to be focused on realistic games in realistic settings.
