FanEu7 551
For me it's still Goodfellas. It's Scorsese at his peak, its fast paced and never boring, the characters are compelling and Liotta, Pesci and De Niro deliver great performances. Everything mob related since then has had some influence from Goodfellas, that's how important it was
RedNitrate 20
Tough to name just one soo.. Donnie Brasco, Goodfellas and of course Godfather 1 + 2. I even quite liked 3 *queue boo's* maybe not as much as the originals but still a solid film.

DownInThePMs 2,428
The entire Yakuza Papers movie series by Kinji Fukasaku. I also really like Sonatine, City Of God, Dead Presidents and Pulp Fiction. Edited December 24, 2020 by DownInThePMs
Jason 28,147
Guy Ritchie's British gangster films, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch and RocknRolla. Legend is also pretty decent albeit not a great, so is the TV movie "The Krays" starring the Kemp brothers. In Bruges if you could call it a gangster film but it's not really a traditional one.

Lonely-Martin 34,574
Too many, a favourite genre that's given me much entertainment over the years indeed! All of the above and more, I'll only add what's not listed. The Irishman Gangs of New York Carlito's Way The Untouchables Rise of The Footsoldier Essex Boys I could go on and I'm sure I forgot many. Also, I know you said movies, but you really can't leave both The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire off this list. Absolutely amazing shows that are worthy of a place, if not to top any worthy 'best gangster' list.

ThatBenGuy 2,901
While I do very much enjoy the Italian or Italian-American Mafia genre, I honestly think that the Russian Mafia, Yakuza of Japan, and Triad of China deserve more representation in movies, video games, books, and TV shows. I have actually rewritten Rocky 4, The Spy Next Door, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and Red Sparrow to have a Russian Mafia focus. All four of those movies were still good IMO but I honestly can’t see why they couldn’t put Russian Mafia as a focus as antagonists or anti-heroes. And yes, I know there actually is a Russian mobster named Dimitri Ustinov in Red Sparrow but he isn’t really that big of a character. I’d like to rewrite it where roles are reversed. He’s a Russian spy and Dominika Egorova works for Russian mobsters. In my own take on the story, Red Sparrow is basically the Russian Mafia equivalent of The Godfather or even The Sopranos. I have also rewritten Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade where Indiana Jones combats Italian, Irish, and Jewish mobsters rather than Nazis in search of the same artifacts. The only movies, books, video games, and TV shows where I think mobsters should most likely be kept out of are ones about wars, antiquity, the Middle Ages, or other similar settings. Apart from those, I really don’t see any reason at all why a book, movie, video game, or TV show can’t include mobsters.

Mister Pink 12,204
I'll add In Bruges as Jason did. It's a gangster film as much as a tragic-comedy but it the storyline features two gangsters in laying low, so I think it qualifies. Donnie Brasco Scarface Goodfellas Casino Blow A Bronx Tale Carlitos Way The Godfather I & II Boyz N Da Hood The Departed American Gangster Despite being one of the highest rated and most critically acclaimed films in this genre and the films listed, I find A Bronx Tale is unrepresented in these lists. Phenomenal scenes here. Edited January 14 by Mister Pink

But alas, unlike Clint Eastwood, he must not have caught the directing bug.
