Weird things you used to think when you were young about the GTA series

When I glitched through the floor of the gym in Ganton (GTA SA) and into the void, I genuinely thought it was the underworld and all the pedestrians walking around were the souls of my victims, still trapped in a limbo.

It made me feel kind of sad, but as I grew a little older (like 11), I came to the conclusion that I was just bug in the game and that there was no actual reason for them to be down there.

You are not alone, I get to interiors map and that was for me truly scary experience as kid.

Silent and dark place without any boundaries. I even teleports to Saints Mark Bistro with water level set to crazy numbers to swim across map. Most eerie experience for me.

As a kid I thought since there are clones of every pedestrian that maybe another Tommy is roaming the map somewhere but he'd be hard to find

When I was about 12 I bought San Andreas AO in secrecy on ebay because I thought the Hot Coffee mod was on that version.

I have hot coffee friendly version, but I never installed it as kid because I was aware that I get that minigame when parents are home 😄 .

I installed it for fun just year ago :kekw: .

When playing the Naval Engagement mission for the first time, I was for whatever reason unable to make my way around to the front of the mansion and thus assumed I would have to escape with the big cumbersome boat instead. I did use a wanted level cheat to get the police heat off me immediately, but what followed was an intense and long search for a location where I could safely get back to land, because I couldn't fit it under the Starfish Island bridges and therefore would've had to circumnavigate the whole map just to get to the boatyard or Cortez's pier. I think it was one of the last times I truly felt lost in Vice City.

You just reminded me of a very old Vice City myth.

There was a myth that supposedly if you traveled far down south you would reach Cuba.

I vaguely remember a Cuba map mod but I can't find it.

Disclaimer: I feel like I should really consider making a whole thread in the VC section about my experiences on that game alone. Nearly every mission has some damn tale to tell about the perspective of a dumb kid.

- I expected there to be a lot of phone missions in VC. I had seen several other unused phones, like behind Malibu, outside Diaz's at Starfish Island, or by the Starfish bridge in Little Havana, and for me it just made sense that all of those would eventually ring and yield a new mission.

- I was oddly selectively ignorant to the plot's events. Whenever the mission required picking up a briefcase (Mall Shootout, Phnom Penh '86, Loose Ends etc.) I thought they contained a fraction of Sonny's missing money that had ended up all over the city at the hands of miscellaneous criminals, so by collecting briefcases I was absolving Tommy's debt little by little in my mind, even when I was obviously taking them to Cortez, Diaz and other characters - as if they didn't have their own agendas at play.

Me too! I thought the exact same thing during some of my earliest playthroughs of the game.

OT: During one of my very first playthroughs of GTA3, I kept failing at "Bomb Da Base: Act II" because of my poor shooting skills (the Colombians kept gunning down 8-Ball before I could even get a shot at them). I had already discovered Body Armor pickups in an earlier playthrough, so I had this idea to make 8-Ball walk through the Body Armor pickup located at the edge of the south-easternmost pier in Atlantic Quays (because that was the only one I had discovered so far), I took him there and "lured" him into picking the Body Armor up thinking he'll be able to last longer while I constantly adjust my horrible aim during the sniping part... but it just didn't work out. Turns out peds can't use pickups.:kekw:

I managed to pass it rather easily later on anyway...

Algonquin Assassin

Some more.

-I used to think burping and farting was some special ability you could use to kill  NPCs in 2D era GTAs.

-If CJ ate too much causing him to become fat he would die from being an obese fat f*ck.

-Because GTA III released around the time of 9/11 that was the only reason it was initially banned in Australia and that’s why I couldn’t play it, but nope. Too much violence and sex was the reason. Ah censorship. What a bitch.

When I heard Four Little Diamonds by Electric Light Orchestra...

What he said...

"And if the law don't get her then I will... FOUR LITTLE DIAMONDS!"

What I heard...

"And if the law don't get her then I will... ROLLIN' ON DIAMONDS!"

Whenever I was messing around on the train tracks in III circa 2007 at one point I spotted the flamethrower on one of the building rooftops and thought “how do I get that paintball gun from up there?” :kekw:

My parents didn't let me play the games for a while, but when San Andreas came out for some reason they changed their minds. Anyway, because my parents told me the game wasn't appropriate for kids I thought GTA was some sort of horror game or something and was scared shirtless whenever I tried to play it.

Bro I used to play GTA Mexico in like 2013.

I remember those fake links such as "DESCARGA GTA SAN ANDREAS EN RAPIDSHARE" and taking you to those sh*tty ass survey sites with no actual download.

f*cking time my dude.

I'm glad that Rapidshare died some time ago, unlike Megaupload I totally despised that site (the bad thing is that all the stuff uploaded there is lost forever).

Seriously, a well done GTA Mexico is my pipe dream, it would be so much fun travelling through fictionalized versions of CDMX or Tamaulipas.

Probably very common but I thought N was a mission marker and tried to drive there

Can't think of anything else

I could've sworn one of TBOGT's San Juan Sounds songs said "I miss our leaders". What do they mean by "leaders"? Do they miss Fidel Castro and Che Guevara?

I didn't understand what the hidden packages in GTA III were supposed be.

Once while playing San Andreas with my younger cousins, I was shooting up the police station in Los Santos and one of them told me to go to the showers to get the "purple sword". It was a dildo. I was old enough to know what it was (well actually probably not, but I knew anyway) but I didn't want to spoil their innocence (lol, we were shooting up a police station) so I just went along with it and pretended it was an oddly shaped, incredibly blunt sword.

I used to play LCS on ps2 and because of darker colors compared to psp and because of that i always taught the whole serie has a depressing theme like gta IV

When I heard about TBOGT, I thought Gay Tony was going to be the protagonist by looking at the title. I bet there are others who shared the same thoughts as me.

I used to think you unlocked the fingerless gloves from the posters after you shot all the pigeons in Liberty City. I also used to think that you could somehow go back to Liberty City in SA after the Saint Mark's Bistro mission if you flew the same route that you did to get there.

Oh yeah one thing I suddenly remembered when I started replaying IV. I used to think Badman was like Little Jacob's imaginary friend. I'm not sure why I thought this at all.

A Max Payne game in CDMX would be f*cking dope, or even a game like Sleeping Dogs.

Reminds me when I was young, I searched for Xbox 360, PS3, 3DS emulators and what I failed to realize the "emulators" I looked for were scams.

What I realized, the menu layout of the "emulators" look the same, the names of them are generically named and they ask for BIOs, which download links either require some sort of password you have no chance of getting or surveys which you'll never complete. The YouTube comments on the videos also have comments like "It worked! The dislike button worked!".

Now, fast forward years later and we have actual Xbox 360, PS3 and 3DS emulators, Xenia, RPCS3 and Citra.

Another one of those Lady Mondegreen moments...

What he said in Let it Whip...

"I won't waste your time"

What I heard...

"I'm always your time"

What he said in Candy...

"It's like candy"

What I heard...

"It's like tender"
