Weird things you used to think when you were young about the GTA series

In GTA 4, I thought the Albanians came from Albany, as in the capital of New York.

Hardly realized these guys were actually based on the Albanian Boys who came from the European Albania.

I remember really early in the days of GTA IV, I got into a police chase, drowned my car and swam for five minutes straight. I then reached the shores of Bohan for the first time and thought I had discovered a whole secret area of the game. This was so early in the story as well, I didn't even know the place existed.

This reminds me...

I think it was the first time I've played Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. So, when I was roaming around San Andreas and came to San Fierro I thought I was in Los Santos, as the cop cars were the same. Eh...

Even worse... when I was playing Grand Theft Auto III for the first time I roamed around Portland and because the game looked awful on my PC (and run 5 FPS) I thought I've seen a huge mountain in Portland. I even wanted to find it. However, it wasn't a mountain, but Chinatown part of Portland nearby Callahan Bridge. WTF?

-When I played GTA IV for the first time in 2012, I though Broker and Dukes themselves were Liberty City, and all the other boroughs were different cities.

-I once thought GTA VC and VCS were the same game.

Back when IV was a new game, I thought Niko sounded like Shrek. I would mention how I also thought Brucie sounded like Donkey, but sometimes he still kinda does

It's funny because Niko and Brucie chemistry plays similar to Shrek and Donkey's

This thread makes me realize how old I am LMMFAO DAMMIT!!!

So when GTAIII came out I was already 21, working for my neighbor, who was working for cartel, working odd jobs from security to transporting for cash and buddage. After getting hit for $50,000 dollars he had reinforced gates for the front and back, a 4 camera system, a shotgun, tek9, a .45 glock and desert eagle, and started paying me, my boy, and two of his cousins to watch the house He got a big TV, a PS2, and GTAIII and the four of us played the sh*t out of it, switching when a mission was completed or you died. Vice City we tried flying to North till we got bored, jumped in the water and drowned. I remember it did give a feeling like there was infinite secrets and items hidden all over the place.

Oh, I remember thinking for sure there was a way to get Tommy drunk in the bar.

I was very young but I used to believe there's actually Big Foot around the forests of San Andreas. I legit avoided going deep into Back O' Beyond  especially at night time not only because of big foot but also how the atmosphere pretty much creeped me out.

I used to think that Niko Bellic and Roman Bellic were actually Russian and not from the Balkans. It took me a while before I realized that the "old country" meant Yugoslavia. I think some people might've thought the same while the game was being developed.

I thought that we were selling actual Ice Creams during that mission in Vice City. I was confused on why the cops and gang members would get aggressive at me lol.

Again I was pretty young but I thought that there was an actual Superman outfit in GTA SA that would turn CJ into Superman with super powers.

I once believed that there was a ghost in that park bathroom in GTA 3. I don't quite remember what led me to believe that there were ghosts there but the place always gave me the heebie-jeebies.

I just remembered that at a tender age, I would think Molotov cocktails were named "Rampage" because my first rampage was the molotov one at Ocean Beach. :p

Also speaking of early VC, I thought the drug deal scene at the start was filmed at Liberty City's Portland Harbor and not Vice City, because to me it just appeared to resemble it, and I didn't recognize the location from VC, never having explored it in detail. I think I eventually caught on, even before VCS had you visit that place multiple times.

I thought that Alderney was part of Liberty City at first. But I am pretty sure that this happened to many people.

They used to sell GTA SA mods in Brazil's shops like if they were separated games from SA, we had GTA Sonic, GTA Batman, GTA Tropa de Elite, GTA Rio De Janeiro and São Paulo and a lot of other crazy sh*t.

And of course, as a kid i thought that all of them were official. Since these mods were made to run on PS2, it was a festival of crashs, bugs and low FPS, but it was so f*cking fun (and cheap, each one of them used to cousts like 5 reais, equivalent to maybe 2 dollars)

I remember similar stuff here but it's like GTA SA: Arabic, GTA: Superheros, GTA: Spiderman, GTA SA: Pepsiman and such lmao. It reaches to the point where finding a non modded PS2 San Andreas copy was way harder than finding these garbage. Most of the time, they just change the default CJ's Model in a such poor & ugly way and replace the billboard textures or restaurants to random nonsense. Otherwise, it ran "kinda fine" on my end.

lol exactly, it was very hard to find the vanilla gta sa. even the ones that didn't look bizarre in the cover art had some kind of modded thing or two. sometimes you were thinking that you was playing just a regular gta sa but it always had something, gangs in the game dressed as brazilian soccer teams, ronaldinho gaucho walking down the street as if was just normal, etc.

i remember that there was a mod that was so normal to find in those versions that i use to thought that it was a vanilla cheat of the game, because in every version that i played as a kid, there was a cheat that turned CJ into a ninja with flying powers

I didn't experience this myself but remember reading about someone who did. Apparently, when he was a kid, he thought he found a PS2 copy of GTA IV. When he booted it up, it was just regular SA but with CJ using a Niko Bellic skin. Literally nothing else was changed or different. Everything was the same except CJ looked like Niko. That was the whole selling point of the mod.

I never knew that GTA 3 has references to sex and that the characters had relationships/affairs type things between them.

Used to think that To Let signs in VC had an "I" missing/worn out - Toilet.

That GTA 1/2 cover art (PHOTO) was an acctual screenshot from the game. So disappointment, much sad.

I spent a lot of time trying to get to the N marked in GTA 3. I didn't know why it was there until about 2010. My personal best getting there was jumping from the boat onto the buoys behind the Phil Cassidi's place with the intention on walking the entire length of the rope to the opposite shore. I think I fell off because they weren't designed to be walked on.

During the initial playthrough I didn't notice how much of pricks Tommy and Sweet were.

Thought that the tunnel in GTA 3 would eventually open and that the garage in GTA SA would be fixed up.

Used to think that the dialogue between Tommy and Ken in VC intro was spoken by one person, because the Russian dubbers translated it in one voice, as you would if reading a monologue. Made no sense at all.

After reading this thread I learned that:

- Kent Paul isn't called Kent

- Gay Tony isn't the game's protagonist

other thing that i used to thought as a kid

the first gta i played was san andreas when i had like 4 or 5 years in a friend's house, i remember to be mesmerized and scared at the same time, i had never played a violent game before. by the next time i managed to go to the camelão (brazilian shop houses with a lot of false products and cheap things) i asked to the guy in the games section a pirate copy of GTA, he selled me GTA Vice city for the equivalent of 2 dollars in a plastic bag, but when i booted up i was like "wtf that's not gta" and asked to change it in the very next day, explaining that i wanted the real GTA with the black guy and the bike lol. Old times, man....

  • When I first played The Snow Storm, I had no idea what everybody meant by "coke", so I thought Elizabeta was fed up over a can of Coca-Cola
  • I thought UL Paper was a newspaper company
  • When I discovered VCS took place two years before before VC, I thought that if I were to let two in-game years pass by, I would be able to play VC through VCS' engine
  • I had no idea how to pronounce Huang's name no thanks to the lack of voice acting in CTW, so for a while I just pronounced it as "Hung"
  • For years, I thought III's European front cover was fanart
  • When IV was still new, I was a noob with Roman numerals, so I pronounced IV as "if"

Some others..

-The first time I saw "wasted" plastered over the screen when I died I just thought I got really drunk.

-I thought the hidden packages in Vice City really were bags of cocaine and by collecting them I assumed I could sell them later on.

-Woozies's blindness wasn't apparent to me at first. In missions when he was in gameplay walking into things I thought the A.I glitched out haha.

I feel sorry for whoever wasted their money on that sh*t lmao.

lol i would buy a new GTA game featuring johnny klebitz the microsecond it gets released.

Before the Candy Suxxx thing I shared in page 1 when I played a version of VC that actually had missions (still modded though)

I used to think that Mercedes was Tommy's wife

I used to think that Sonny is Tommy's dad but as soon as I saw Cortez I thought that he's Tommy's dad and Also Mercedes' even though she's Tommy's wife

I used to think that Kent Paul was Tommy's young brother because they wore the same shirt

And this was Tommy's big happy family :D

holy crap, that reminded me about the first time I reached San Fierro in SA, I was being chased by the cops in the countryside and my dumbass swam for a while until I found myself in Easter Basin in Fierro, as soon as I saw those skyscrapers I legitimatly thought that it was a secret place in SA.

I have to admit a zombie Klebitz simulator with half of his skull missing would be cool.

Dave Mustaine 1998

I’ve actually already said this in another thread over a year ago but I used to think Vlad Glebov was Roman’s boss at the cab depot.
