Weird things you used to think when you were young about the GTA series

^above reminded me of something

When I get the RESPECT+ after completing a mission. I always thought it meant CJ is getting more respectful and good which always confuses me like bro I just killed a bunch of ballas and how does that make me more respectful?

There was a time that my PC would crash in one of the San Fierro missions in GTA SA so I couldn't progress further as a kid. So I used cheats to get to Las Venturas and I thought that president of the US was gonna be there and if I find him and kill him the mission wouldn't crash anymore. Yeah don't ask me how those thoughts existed in my head. Eventually I downloaded a save file that had that mission completed.

LOL kids are schizos

I used to think the flashing yellow traffic lights in VC meant “stop”.

My father would always tell me I drove like sh*t in video games and he’d never want to ride in a car with me so, at the tender age of 8, I went out to prove him wrong. I was like DAD LOOK AT HOW SAFE I CAN DRIVE IN THE VIDEO GAME and he came into my bedroom to watch me drive a sh*tty beige Hermes through Washington beach during a thunderstorm. However, despite me stopping at all lights and going the limit and staying in my lane, I came across a flashing yellow traffic light and I just stopped because I didn’t know what to do. A few seconds later my dad was like f*ckIN GO ITS FLASHING YELLOW YOU TREAT IT LIKE A FOUR WAY STOP and he left to go watch pbs and get drunk

That’s when I lost my fathers respect and knew what to do when you come across a flashing traffic light, all thanks to vice city

Interestingly enough in the 2018 Spider-man game there's a mission that references Niko and Roman.

Oooh, do you remember the name of the mission so that I can look it up on Youtube? Was it a good quality reference at least?

I used to think Ma Cipriani was the building itself yelling at Toni and Claude

I used to think Loc was so gangster that he stole Dogg's garden tools as well, and now Dogg is pissed. That's because when Madd Dogg says "give me back my hoes" to OG Loc in Cut Throat Business the translators translated "hoes" to mean the tool.

Which language were you playing on? Care to elaborate?

I was playing with a Hungarian fan translation. In English "hoe", as I am sure you know, both means hooker and a tool that can be used to shape the soil. Whoever made the fan translation had no idea of how contexts work.

I never payed attention to SA's story and never understood what the characters were talking about ('cause I hadn't developed vast English skills back in the day) or what the plot as a whole was about, so I always used to blast GSF members on sight not knowin' they're actually allies as if they're Balla members or something lol.

This was the only GTA I used to play as a youngster. Had VC and III too but didn't care much for them as I was more used to SA.

Ah, I see. The flag at the bottom of your profile pic gave it away, maybe I should've noticed that earlier.

When I saw the gameinformer preview for Liberty City Stories, I thought JD was CJ because they both had tank tops on and they were both black or at least my stupid 9 year old self thought JD looked black

When I was younger, I never understood why Vic was so offended by the "How high can you jump, boy" comment by that member of the Trailer Park gang in VCS.

I honestly thought he was just complimenting him or simply just making fun of his height.

Vic has Asperger’s and doesn’t know what’s a compliment and what’s an insult.

OT - I thought tommy vercetti was one of the cartel guys in III’s opening cutscene just because they both wore Hawaiian shirts

I thought Liberty City was a state and the three boroughs were cities. The same with Vice City, but I was confused why they kept calling it Florida. Later on, I thought San Andreas was the 51st state.

I thought Liberty City in the 3D universe went through a lot of construction and became bigger by 2008.

I thought when GTA III was completed, the airport would open and you could fly across the US. Same with the blocked tunnels.

I thought the GTA world shared the same universe with Max Payne, Thief, Mafia, True Crime

When I played IV online for the first time when I was like 12 or 13 or whatever, I thought when everyone left the game at the exact same time, I never thought it was me lagging out of their game. I just thought none of them liked me and all left at the same time

I thought you could actually buy drugs from the drug dealers who would solicit you on the streets in SA and I accidentally kept hitting “no”. I didn’t know both buttons were a firm “no” from CJ which kinda made their inclusion a bit moot imho

Take this with a grain of salt but I think if you press Y then CJ will say no in a less aggressive manner. If you press N dealers may attack you after being so aggressive towards them verbally.

Yea, that’s how it was ingame. It was just so weird tho, like you’d expect Y to buy drugs and N to say no to drugs, not both of them do the same function
