Conflicting information - Free aim / Aim Assisted

Hey all,

I just found out about Free-Aim vs Aim-assist. Someone said the lobbies/world sessions are split up. Someone else said that as of November they are mixed. Is there any sort of definitive answer to this, or even maybe some patch notes/statement from R*?

Long story short I play PC w mouse/keyboard 100% and want to avoid playing against auto aim/aim assistance of any kind if possible.

I'm on console, but as far as I know it is the same across the board: There are no separate lobbies of any kind.  Free aim players play with aim assist players.

I've been curious about this for a while. How do you enable free-aim?

Controller settings I believe? But is it a true free aim?  IDK. I'm not ashamed to admit I use the assist.  Forgive me, @AmyStone, but I have to ask if this is a legit question from you?  You spend more time in this game than the majority of the forum combined.

There used to be separate lobbies you would get put into depending on your setting. Unfortunately that is no longer the case. I loved free aim lobbies because most griefers avoided those like the plague.

I don't think you get the option for assisted aim on PC without a controller.

Me either. I think I saw someplace where a few keyboard players were saying they couldn't.

I went in the first day to make sure it was set on free aim, and there was no option then.

I haven't looked for it since.

So if you are on PC you go into your controller settings and turn both aim settings to "Free Aim" (these aren't set by default). Now if you get kills you will get additional XP  (it pops up saying 10 xp  20 xp free aim)

It doesnt sound like anyone is 100% sure about free aim and auto aim lobbies though: Right now it is mixed whether you like it or not?

1) The lobbies are *definitely* mixed.

2) If you are on PC with mouse and keyboard you are free aim... and you better not bother with PvP because you'll get slaughtered.  Mouse and keyboard you pretty much only aim at targets that aren't moving (or at least not moving much) or you will likely miss.

3) I typically posse with friends who have controllers on PC.  The aim-assist totally influences their playstyle.  While I play from a distance and go for headshots when I can, they rush in with all guns blazing... which of course makes the NPCs run like chickens without a head instead of staying politely in one place shooting at me in the distance.  The net result is that when I posse with my controller-using friends I don't even bother to shoot, I just go on a looting rampage while they shoot.

They are mixed. As far as I know they’ve always been mixed. They were never separated. I use free-aim while my friends use aim assist. We always play together. Some can be misled though in certain situations. For example.

If you play “aim assist” and join a posse leader who carries you into either a free aim showdown or 5-star legendary bounty, you might assume you are being carried into a free aim server because your settings are set to aim-assist. This was the case with a friend of mine, but it’s just certain game-modes and legendary bounty missions force free aim for everyone.

I can relate, though in my group (on PS4) all my auto-aim friends tend to engage at the edge of locking range with their bolt actions while I like to get up close free-aiming with shotguns, sidearms and hip-fired repeaters. Same net result though, I get first dibs on the loot while they're catching up :D

Wow that was helpful. I must remember to do something similar when someone else asks  legitimate question.

Ok, I've never noticed these. I presume this works for playstation too. Thank you.

They were separate long ago. I used free aim lobbies all the time. It wouldn't let you switch to auto lock while in the lobby, the setting was greyed out. If you joined a server with a friend who was using auto aim a message would pop up telling you that you were being changed to auto aim and vice versa.

It was about 6 months ago when I noticed they weren't separate any longer. I know early on with PC they were separate. I don't know exactly when they merged them.

So at one time they had a feature I would have really liked and I didn't even know about it.  Just as well I guess, saved me the disappointment when they took it away.

I wrote Red Dead Online Settings in a pic with large bold letters.

An average idiot should be able to understand it.

Yes, well as 'For Dummies'. That's the part that was unnecessary.

I'm surprised they haven't written the "Red Dead for Dummies" book since they have one on just about every other subject.  I wouldn't take too much offense, that is a real line of books.

I agree, it needs to be written, but written for the people in charge of RDR2 online.

If you are using slippery bastard and you are free aiming on PC, do you still get the reduced aim effects.  The effect does not happen on console for scoped weapons. So, maybe just use slippery bastard and free aim pvp from distance.  Because they nerfed tonics, the auto aimers will still get some kills

I’ve been plying since the beta, and it was never an option on console to the best of my knowledge. I assume you are referring to the PC port?

I never even knew that was a thing. Now you mention it I have noticed some people being able to stay in slippery almost constantly. When was it nerfed?

It was nerfed not that long ago.  Almost been a year now, time has really flown by for me.  The nerf happend in the moonshiner update.  There is a way to use tonics while in deadeye. Its requires quick use of the weapon wheel.  Its sort of the way ewo used to be in GTAO.  Its not really worth learning to use the bug unless you are a griefer.

I am on PC. If you had your setting set to free aim you would automatically be put in a free aim lobby. I never tried it on PS4 since I always was with my posse back then.
