Would you like to see R* original car designs?

Cars have always been the biggest part of Grand Theft Auto, as you can tell from the name. Even as the game has expanded outwards, with every online DLC Rockstar brings there are a ton of new car designs. From concepts, classic vehicles, and mashups of existing car designs we’ve seen a pretty cool variety.  It’s safe to say that it’s a core part of the games identity, and new vehicles are Onlines fuel.

I was YouTubing and I found this video, the creator is a famous car designer who has had a hand in many commonly known vehicle designs. He critiques the design of several GTA vehicles giving his personal opinion on some, and talking about features on certain cars that are amazing or terrible and ruin the look.

Some of his points I did agree with, small differences that ruined the look of vehicles. But it got me thinking, what if GTA Online starts introducing original vehicles.

They’ve already introduced practically every commonly known car, and if the game keeps expanding they’ll need content. I think with the uniqueness of how players treat vehicles in GTA online, plus with the resources of Rockstar, it would be an amazing move to start making their own car designs by hiring designers in the industry.

I honestly think this could lead to some amazing concepts. Vehicles that aren’t practical in real life or require too much effort, but that an artist can bring to GTA without worrying about factors preventing it in real life. This could be ideas of classic, futuristic and modern design, giving us endless amounts of variety.

By hiring actual car designers, it would also enable real life vehicles that are introduced to be a lot more polished, with features and mixes that go well together that only people in the industry would know.

I also think with GTAs scale, it could impact real life car designs by introducing concepts to the public.

Would you guys like to see GTA online start getting these types of vehicles?

Sorry I had to laugh at this, first they desperately need to hire quality programmers to fix the sh*t storm of game breaking bugs this game constantly has.   As far as cars go I think they’ve done a good job the last couple years, although they won’t use irl cars due to license issues they have gotten as close as they could especially with the most requested vehicles.  I’d like to see more mod options for the older vehicles, more liveries  exhaust notes   Wheel/tire sizes along with lift kits for trucks.  Blowers instead of turbo option among others.

1.) Bruh, lmao. I can name at least ten interesting cars off the top of my head that aren't in this game right now. Do you not know about cars existing? Games like Forza and Gran Turismo feature 700+ licensed cars and people are still clamoring for more new models.

2.) We already have enough vehicles that aren't practical in real life and most people in the Vehicles section hate them!

3.) No, no it couldn't impact real cars. It's a goofy game with childish physics, not to mention any game where you can use a car to pick up a hooker will not really appeal to automotive executives.

4.) No, please, just let Rockstar keep doing their thing and adding cars that look nice and are reasonable facsimiles of a couple cars that mesh well together.

No, keep real vehicles out of GTA. They look completely out of place.

Real cars must meet safety regulations and with the rise of battery cars aerodynamics might become more important, this means real cars will become more similar too each other and this might mean that there is less need for car designers who could then work for R* or others.

So car designers could well use their know how to work with game designers, whereas the other way round it may rather not work since safety and fuel economy issues become more and more important.

Sony btw. developed a battery car or was involved with:

Real life vehicles are absoluty wrong in GTA. Thats the whole purpose of the game, being a "parallel universe" to the real life counterpart. So als cars have atleast one counterpart or more and have a lot of different aspects and designs from other cars and It should stay that way like it was from the beginning with the first GTA. No need for real life cars or real designers, its fine and perfect that way how it is right now.

I always preferred the more original take on vehicles that Rockstar used to bring to the table - I mean yes, you could look at some of their 'originals' like the Beast GTS and Banshee and think: "Well that's clearly based on a Dodge Viper"... but it was different enough to stop you from saying: "That IS a Dodge Viper".

The mash-up-vehicles fall into two camps: genius, or fugly. But again, they're different enough from any real-life counterparts to keep your head in the game - it's when Rockstar blatantly copies a real vehicle but then doesn't (or can't) give it the real vehicle's handling or speed. Take the GP1 - clearly a McLaren F1... but doesn't go 200MPH in-game.

TLDR: I'd prefer the parody aspect and detachment from reality to remain paramount in GTA, as it's an arcade crime game... not a simulator.

I mean, I'm sure Rockstar could use some outside help/consultants to make some of their car designs look, overall, a little tighter and harmonious - in the same vein that they probably employ some fairly skilled cinematographers to help with their games' cutscenes, from lighting to composition to character placement - but there's only one problem...

Who the hell would want to do that? I'm sure it pays a whole lot more to actually work in the industry and draw up the next Honda Fit than it is to receive sketches from game devs of the next oversized GTA supercar and try to fix it. Car designers that are unproven would probably do the exact thing as rockstar devs (which is to go too far in certain places with certain cars in an attempt to make a statement) and the ones that are more established for their work, that would show restraint and thought in their designs, wouldn't need to work for Rockstar.

Back in the day when I used to mod GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas extensively, I used to replace some of the vehicle models with real life counterparts, and then edit the relevant text file so it was no longer "Blista" but "Civic" or "CRX" or whatever.
It's not something I can really bring myself to do these days... Perhaps replacing an AH-64 with an AH-1 or some other gunship would be fine but for most of the grounded vehicles - nah.

I think "where we're at" now with the overall modelling and development of car models is pretty good, with some vehicles even looking almost the same as their real life counterpart (new Coquette springs to mind in addition to the Vamos or... one of them muscles) so I'd leave it well alone.

Yes theres some terrible ‘copies’ in this game, so I dont put those in my garages.

Unique cars sound cool but real car designers would be way too expensive. And dont forget a lot of people, me included, buy cars ingame because it reminds them of cars they like IRL.

How long do you think it takes to design cars? Better yet, how much designers work for?

It's easier and cheaper just to mix an match sh*t together, and there's still tons of cars that aren't in the game, that should be.

In theory I think completely original car designs could be cool for sure, and if there weren’t so many problems with the game already I’d definitely be on board. I’d opt for original car designs over real life cars actually being in gta because it just feels kinda tacky. But I get where you’re coming from.
