Beginner questions - Read Dead Online

Recommended Posts

1) I noticed a pretty significant number of griefers that will attack you when you are hunting or searching for stuff in a town.  Is there a setting to avoid it?

ANSWERED: <P>/<Scroll Down>/Online/Defensive Mode.  WARNING:  Mine reset itself to Offensive later, not sure if it was something I did or if it is something we have to set for each session.

2) When griefed I noticed that sometimes I can report the assault, which puts a bounty on the griefer.  Cool solution, but it doesn't seem to happen a all times - even outside of missions where player attacks are allowed.  What is the best thing to do when you can't report the assault?

ANSWERED:  Same as option 1.

3) I read that one way to get rid of persistent griefers is to exit and select another server.  The only way I know to do that is to exit the game completely and restart, which takes a long time.  Is there a way to exit just the current match/server without exiting the game altogether?  I understand this is also a way to fast travel to another area.  It is probably staring me in the face but I don't see the option.

ANSWERED: <P>/Online/Free Roam

4) The volume is very low compared to all other apps in the computer, is this a bug?  If it is a bug, can it be expected to go away in a future update?

ANSWERED:  <Alt-Tab> to get to desktop, Open the Volume Mixer, Raise the RDO volume.  You might need to do this after every time you start the game.

5) When I tried to create a forum account for this game using the email/username that I use in game I was told that it could not be used (not that it already existed, that it could not be used).   Luckily I found this old (no longer used) account that I used with GTA and was able to recover the password.  Why could the new/current email - which is what is associated with the game - not be used?

6) I can find a lot of things in the menu, but there are a couple things like treasure maps and rewards that I only seem able to bring up (on PC) when I get prompted to open them with F1 right after an accomplishment.  What is/are the key(s) to bring them up?

ANSWERED: <P>/Progress

Thanks.

EDIT - New questions:

7) In PC how do you open the menu to view your skill progress? (besides when you are prompted to hit F1 to view it).  As a matter of fact how do you open the menu for most of the things that you get prompted to view by hitting F1?  (not L, not J, not B... those I got figured out)

ANSWERED:  <P>/Progress

8 ) I an at rank 31, bought the fishing rod and worms, and according to all of the guides I can find I should be able to equip the fishing rod from the weapon wheel... but it is not there, even as I scroll through the alternative items with Q/E.  Is there maybe someone I need to meet before I can use it?  Or what am I doing wrong?  (of course, trying to do today's daily for fishing)

SELF-ANSWERED (and facepalm):  The weapon wheel as a ITEMS tab.  Doh!

9) What are the cheapest "beginner" outfits for cold, average and warm temperatures?  I assume the initial free clothes are the cheapest average, but what about the other two?

1) Play in defensive mode via the online menu.

3) You don't have to exit the game completely, just go to the main red menu and select "online" and then select "freeroam"  or "camp". Camp is better, since you are protected there from start.

5) A stafff/moderator can possibly answer this issue.

One of the things I've been doing is get into a store and browse the catalog.  I am *guessing* that it sets you in some kind of protected mode, but I don't really know, more of a hope.

Mainly, I do this if I have to go to the bathroom for a moment or need to reply to an email or other message, or even if I am typing something like this.  It might only take a minute, but it is enough for someone to come and kill you while you are not paying attention.

Ty, based on this I did <Esc>/Online and it brought me to the same menu you get when you start the app.  So much faster!

4) not a bug

Your opinion or did Rockstar say it was intentional to have the volume so low you can barely hear it?

5) what forum?

This forum.

6) They are in your satchel (that you can't see... lol f*ck this game)

I found them, "B" (bag) then E to move to the later tabs and eventually they show up.

4) Yes, it's a bug. once the game has loaded, ALT-TAB to your desktop and open the volume mixer from the taskbar, you'll see that RDO is set at almost nil, drag the slider up to full.

You may have to do this every time you load the game, or maybe not. I've had to for 2 out out of 3 days once I was told how to fix it (by someone here, not by greedstar).

6) Check your satchel (B on PC) and scroll between the pages (Q and E), use the arrow keys to scroll within each page.

Greedstar is terrible at giving a good/complete control layout listing.

And welcome to the forum, by the way. You will find loads of very helpful people here (and some not so helpful).

Also any menu will make you immune from damage, the butcher, Madam Nazar, Gus & Harriet

Thanks for the help guys.  It was very useful.

I will probably post other questions as the game is sometimes confusing and uncle Google doesn't always answer :)  but I hope not to be too much of a pest.

As someone said, Defensive Mode solves alot of this games issues if you can turn the other cheek.

Open your Online Menu and find where it says "Offensive" whatever and toggle it to Defensive. As long as you dont attack people you will receive less damage, cannot be auto-aimed and cannot be targetted with Paint it Black.

Doh!  I finally found the "Online Options" (with this choice) hidden in the L menu... I had to scroll to find it, never noticed I could scroll it.

Sorry, I don't play on PC so I didn't know what button it was. It's Left on the D-Pad on consoles.

Defensive Mode is perhaps the best thing added to this game.

It's ESC for the main menu, benefits and progress are the two relevant sections.

Benefits for pass rewards, and progress for the achievements you can reset.

Also, the main menu has an 'online' section that will allow you to change sessions or respawn at your camp or in a specific region in freeroam if you need to get away from a cheater.

ESC/online/freeroam is the fastest way to switch sessions.

I added the answers to the original post, so that this will be helpful to others.

I don’t know if it would be beneficial to you but it may be best to get an Xbox Controller, Xbox One or the latest Xbox controller will be able to connect to PC via Bluetooth and I’ve found it a lot easier than remembering each and every button for Red Dead Online, it may be because I’m 35 but I had the tendency to forget and since I played Red Dead on console originally it was a lot easier to pick it all up for PC

I know it feels weird to use a controller on PC but I’ve found it easier for Red Dead Online in my opinion, it’s the only game I use a controller with anyway.

Also, whilst the payouts aren’t as great as they once were, they are still a source of gold if you would not like to pay for it at least, be sure to check out my site to track your progress rather than bringing up the in game menu - https://rdodailies.com which is automatically updated every day when they reset in game and be sure to checkout the Daily Challenges thread for helpful tips for some of them and where I try and post the Daily Challenges each day at time of reset, but sometimes my body doesn’t like getting up so early since it’s 6:00AM in my time zone when they reset!

No need to be embarrassed, I asked many control questions a year ago (PC release) because ALL of the online resources that list the controls are all console lists. Many of the controls are hard to find or just plain hidden.

PC controls feel cobbled together with only partial lists here and there, really poorly laid out, not intuitive at all.

And greedstar doesn't care.

This is what the forum is for, soon you'll be handing out advice to noobs too.  😁

It should say in the catalogue ('J' on PC) which items are effective for each climate, if it doesn't say anything then it's usually OK for regular temps and warm unless you have several layers on.

Cold is the only one that really demands specific clothes, for warm you can go with anything light, like just a shirt and pants.

For example: this coat's description (under the price) has a little sun symbol and says 'warm, too warm for hot weather, pair with other items for protection from the cold'

https://socialclub.rockstargames.com/games/rdr2/catalogue/online/products/6e6fd646/c/3a2e0555

So add some cheap warm pants and maybe some gloves and you're good. I don't know if a particularly warm hat is required, I use one with my cold outfit, but it may not be necessary.

If your outfit isn't sufficient you will lose health faster when in cold regions. Food and tonics will temporarily reverse that.

Minty big game is the best for health, you'll get a gold core and that should last quite a while.

Normally, unless you like to spend a lot of time in the north, cold outfits are kind of a luxury.

However!!!! around Christmas and New Year they add cold weather to all of the map, and a cold weather outfit will be important, because the cold lasts for days.

Buy stuff you like when it's on sale, early on money is tight.

Later you won't worry much about spending money, it becomes much easier to make after getting into the roles.
