The Mysterious One
I haven't been to this board in a while, but I don't have a lot of people to discuss this with (except maybe a friend of mine who may have played the games; maybe I'll talk with him about this). Here it goes. So for a bit I have been doing a True Crime fic and it's mostly a team-up story of Nick Kang and Marcus Reed. Being that I am doing it more as a procedural drama mixed with action-movie elements and crime thriller, I thought that maybe I could do the same for Dead to Rights. After watching Let's Plays and other videos related to those games, I started to see that the first game had some issues with the story. Now I remember liking the game a lot when I was younger and it still would be fun for nostalgia reasons, but then you could also see that the game doesn't really hold up. I also had thought of doing it as reimagining of the first game with a few characters from the second (as it was a prequel) added in. I want to change things up as too many characters were killed off, as well as some characters betraying you in such a swerve-like fashion, and it also felt like the writers of that game were too forgetful. I might put some spoilers in it, even though this game is nearly two decades old and I don't think people would care. But still: Spoiler Some of my issues with the story was the treatment of female characters. One who could have been Jack's partner and possible alternate love interest was killed off too soon. Eve Adams was the character and she definitely seemed like she would have been DTR's version of Mona Sax, but I guess the writers wanted to generate tension by killing her off in too much of a convenient fashion. I could go into Gloria Exner, but Hildy's betrayal in the game was the one I had a problem with more. I get that the writers wanted to have the main love interest turn on Jack as a shocking swerve and then have her explain her reasons. However, the more I revisited past levels, the less it made sense. Okay, I get that she explained that she had her reasons, that she struggled and all that. But then when you look at the infamous stripper scene (because that it one thing the first game was known for) and the cemetery scene a few levels later, she helped Jack because she didn't know about Jack's father's murder and then the cemetery scene, it felt like she didn't expect to see Jack there to visit his father's grave, especially fresh after escaping prison. Sure one could argue some elements, but when seeing the other scenes she was in, the betrayal was a total swerve if I ever saw one. For my version, I kind of want her in there as a past girlfriend of Jack's who could help. I have ideas on how I want to do it, but then I also thought about putting Ruby, who was in DTR2 in it as an on-and-off GF/FWB who is also Jack's CI, but I am not sure. Being that I want this to be more of a crime thriller, I would do some romantic bits, but it's not the main theme of the story. So I was wondering, is it overkill if there are multiple love interests? I'll figure out what I could do. Do you also think that Ruby should be left out? That is assuming that whoever is reading this has played the games before. I just want to know.
