Anyone not as excited for this update due to its theme/setting?

I have deliberated a lot since the reveal of the Cayo Perico update, wether or not to create this topic. I've decided to pull the trigger, and see if I am on my own with this. Of course, everyone is different, and has their own tastes, so I will always be respectful of that. Also, I should absolutely clarify from the off, that I am not coming at this with a negative mindset. I am excited for the release, and have taken a few days off of work to spend a lot of time with it. It will definitely shake things up, and where we stand as of the typing of this post, anythings still possible since we know so little about it.

That being said, I feel I need to get something off my chest, and be openly honest about the fact that with the teaser, and the confirmed info we have so far. I have to admit I am not as excited about this update as I first thought I would be. I will try to explain in better detail. Like I said, I've mulled over it a lot, and for me, it boils down to the theme and setting.

From what we have seen, I can't help put this update into a typical jungle themed infiltration style of gameplay, going after a target of a cartel, complete with its kingpin, and target commodities of predominantly cash and drugs. I'm sorry, but for me.... It's uninspiring. It's bland. Plain. Dare I say... Boring? I know this is GTA, and this is all about stealing, looting and violence. But compared to other past heists, I cannot get out of my head that this is going to be the same old rehash of stuff we have seen so many times over the years in so.many TV shows, movies and games.

Despite that being the train of thought I have had, I wasn't happy with myself for having it. I am not an entitled gamer, and would never slate a developer, so what right do I have to think like this? It's free after all. Who am I to be flippant and unexcited at something I am getting for free? I don't have to play it of course.

So after thinking more on it, and trying to work out why I feel this way, I have came to the conclusion that it's just not what I enjoy. It's not what I like. Compared to the Diamond Casino, the Doomsday Scenario, the nightclubs and the arcades.... I love the things with bright lights, neon, glitz and glamour.

The Diamond Casino was the pinnacle of that, and despite doing each of the 3 heists the same way, by killing a few guards, robbing a vault and escaping, it still.had a setting of excessive piszaz about it. A massively beautiful lit casino. Palm tree covered car park. Valet and consierge door service. Luxurious Mable walls, with LCD screens showing falling diamonds, silky soft carpets, with a revolving platform for a weekly podium vehicle, which we can spin a lucky wheel daily to try and win. Bright, blinging slot machines jingling as you walk past, a high end store with unique merchandise to buy with in house chips, various gambling features such as horse racing and table games, private areas where management lurk, security creating the illusion that this is a safe environment, NPC's dressed to the nines helping create the atmosphere, penthouses to buy, each more luxurious than the next, rooftop terrace, complete with open fire pits, seating to relax, hot tubs, an infinity pool, private helipad, and all with lovely views of downtown Los Santos. This is appealing to me as a person, as well as a gamer. It's a setting I enjoy. I find exciting.

Jump forward to our new heist theme and location, and again, I honestly don't want to come off as negative, but I can't help shake the mental image of a Cuban/Mexican themed island, covered in foliage and jungle, with just a few populated areas, including one massive compound where a drug cartel is camped. What is exciting about that? Wooden gun towers with spotlights. Armed militia guards. Generic cartel buildings, standard open top jeeps, desert roads, a barren runway strip.... What is exciting about all of this? I also can't help think of a Scarface type location, but without all the neon glitz of Miami.

I could go on about the feelings I have in terms of the vehicles and possible storylines, but I fear that I will indeed begin to sound super negative about this right now, when it's not the case. I am excited, but I guess what I am saying is that I am not super excited, or as excited as I want to be, and maybe you guys can help with that? Maybe I am missing something, or I am being to stereotypical in my assessment of the update from what's been revealed so far.

I'm cautious about the update, not excited.

Heists in general aren't really something that have ever appealed to me, mostly due to the necessity of other players (which is a dangerous concept on PC). Obviously the Cayo Perico DLC heist can be done solo, but if players have to deal with aimbot NPCs or Buzzards with 360-degree miniguns ala some Import/Export missions then it won't be something I'll get into.

I think the heist mechanics are going to be on par with those introduced with the Casino Heist, with more freedom to essentially make it as easy (or as difficult) as you want. Hopefully.

In general, whilst a new location does sound potentially good, at the moment there's too much unknown for me to board the hype train. If the island is a heist-only location, that's not the greatest... but equally if it's in freeroam then Mk2 Oppressors and Orbital Cannons will ruin it. In my imagination, the island will be as detailed and lush as some of the scenery in Just Cause 2. In reality, I'm more dubious! However if we get access to it to make new races or whatever, then that'll be a nice change from the old / existing map.

At this point i only care for the heist, no cool vehicles, the island doesn't seem big or fun for free roam, waiting for a teaser that shows something good

Imagine the rally races that could take place on the island, that would be a great addition. New type of races that rely more on driver skill than a fast car.

Good post, OP,  but I think your logic about the new DLC not being up to standard in terms of glamor and glitz is unfounded as we know Rockstar will pull out the stops, and who knows what technological gems we'll get on the island and submarine?

My reservations are how this heist will fit into the organic map of Los Santos and Blaine County? Will it be a loading screen and disappearance into an Arena War type stadium, effectively becoming a minigame within a game, which is what I suspect, or will there be a more organic solution that allows us to travel and explore without feeling disconnected from core GTA, perhaps using a base air defence system to stop griefers from ruining the experience from the skies in Oppressors and jets, etc?

Either way, I also find it hard to buy into the hype, but the nearer it gets the more excited I feel about all the new add-ons to my all-time favorite game.

Yeah I get your point. I too enjoy the glitzier side of a DLC.. Hopefully we will get some of it. I think the Dj places look nice and the music they will be playing is also going to fit in with the a lounge-ish afterparty atmosphere those places convey

But these two images..

Ugh it looks so bland as you said.

I'm excited for a new location. Everything else stems from that! Los Santos is old and stale been driving, shooting and flying through it for 7+ years now!

Its the possibilities of new locations and the new consoles which does it for me!

Don't forget about those new social spaces, that's a new thing which could change a little how LS works ( i think the casino construction will be one of them).

The theme is exactly what I like about it.I'm hoping the setting is Cuba-like,so we get stuff like old late 40s-early 60s American cars,Cold War era eastern European vehicles (Lada Niva, Gaz Volga, Zastava Fićo, Polski Fiat Maluch, Škoda Favorit, Dacia 1100, Ural bike with a sidecar, MZ ETZ250, etc.),some 90s and 2000s European and maybe Japanese hatchbacks,Cold War era guns (full size Uzi, FAL, M14, Vietnam era M16, James Bond's PPK, etc.),old school stuff that would feel unique compared to all the high tech stuff in Los Santos.

My theory is that this DLC is a little market test for Rockstar's grander plans.

- There are rumors that GTA Six will be in Florida, and that the narrative is closely tied to cartels and the central / south American supply chain of contraband. Putting a small flavor of that into GTA Online might be a way of testing how well-received this general theme might be. Will players find this theme engaging, will they want to keep coming back? Not just for the storyline but for the actual game environment?

- IF Perico is a compartmentalized world, i.e. not a direct part of the main GTA5 map but a stand-alone zone that maybe contains within it unique features, vehicles and rules, then once again will players think this works for them compared to just one big game space? Maybe Rockstar realize that placing a huge game map for GTA Six in just one setting, Florida for example, might make the whole game world kinda boring. Instead the story might heavily branch out into many different and independent settings very distant and distinct from each other. Will players feel that this adds variety and makes the game more interesting, or will it fracture the coherence and 'vibe' of the game?

- Miami or not, maybe they feel that the GTA has taken the classic US urban environment as far as it can go. Even if US cities are still going to be the core of future GTA games, to give players something new and unique they are going to have to look to other places in the world as well. They invested previous R&D in tropical settings (Guarma) so what better starting point than to build on this theme in GTA? And what better way to avoid the controversy of satirizing contemporary US culture, when you can satirize drug lords and narco-empires instead?

- Could the storyline for Perico directly link to the storyline for Six? Could the narrative provide some prequel (or sequel) information that might help to make parts of the plot of Six more coherent and immersive?

Or, maybe this has nothing to do with the next big thing they are cooking up. Maybe they just want to add some new life into Online, and since the map expansion had to be separate from the main map then they might as well go to a tropical drug island since Catalina is as dull as dust and nothing ever happens on Tuvalu too.

I'm quite stoked to be fair. I do get the caution of what R* can do of course, but if R* do the theme right, I'm looking forward to it.

Plus I'm a heist nut in this game. It's the one aspect I've really enjoyed more and more as time goes on. I do agree with you regarding the casino being such a good theme and the glitz and glamour of it all too, I loved it myself. And believe if R* put as much effort into this theme and the flexibility of the casino heist, I'll be loving this DLC. But cartel themes or even heisting isn't for all, so it's understandable why some can't feel it yet.

Hopefully there'll be other aspects you'll really enjoy, I'm looking forward to the solo dynamic as well, though I hope to do this in other ways with others too. As a PvE player at large, that side of things already had me keen.

I love the theme though. Movies like Scarface, Traffic, Sicario, Man On Fire, American Made, Desperado, etc. TV like Narcos or documentaries like Cocaine Cowboys are good watches too. Always enjoyed those so I'm on the lookout for some cool references and the like too.

I'm really looking forward to exploring the new map, and as it's able to be done solo, I hope it is invite only accessible. Would be great if it's free roam friendly though it's not a make or break aspect for me to be fair. But would love if there was collectibles stashed over the map to find and hopefully some other cool games like racing, or that players can create some cool stuff.

And naturally, I hope for some cool new rides and healthy storage. Very keen to see what new music comes too, particularly any Latin vibes or the new DJ's stuff and hopefully some 80's gold. :)

I'm not excited for this update, I haven't really been excited for a incoming update since After Hours, in fact I'm cautious of it.

For this update, I almost lost all of my interest once I saw how small the island will be, how many reused props are being used, the fact that it's only one island, and the fact that it won't be available on free roam like a true map addition, we will have to go through a loading screen...This is assuming that the island won't be locked away for the heist only.

After seeing and considering all of that, I reached the conclusion that the majority of players will stay on that island for about one to two months exploring then they all will be back on Los Santos, and then only really the heist grinders will stick around there.

It will possibly be the best active money-making venture in the game though, and soloable which only makes it better...BUT, I haven't really found the need to grind to at all, I seldom do Casino heist here and there if I want to buy something but then I stop once I reach the money to buy what I want.

Honestly, I am looking forward the vehicle dripfeed and the radio stations only.

To be honest it looks like theyre maybe reusing Agent assets, I remember that one leaked Agent screen. Maybe the whole El Rubio plot itself was taken from Agent. Easier than writing the plot to a whole new mission.

I dont know the thing gives me very Agent vibes

Honestly, I'm excited by this update. I don't have any reservations about it at all.

If you don't like the theme or setting of this DLC then just think about some of the content. There will be something for everybody. Personally, I'm looking forward to these things (+ the island):

  • The Ability To Do The Heist Solo
  • The New Clothing
  • The Tactical Weapons
  • 50+ Vehicles (just assuming and purely basing this off of big DLC's in the past)
  • 100+ Songs

Also, if Cayo Perico is in free roam then that would make the DLC 10x times better (IMO). Plus, it would open the door for mansions and villas to be purchasable properties.

I'm reserving my excitement

First and foremost, it's no secret that cars are like 90-99% of what makes an update for me. It doesn't matter how good the side content is, it all boils down to the cars for me. The Diamond Casino update is my favorite because it not only delivered in everything, it also delivered strong with the cars on top of everything and they sure as hell didn't skimp.

So my first reason for skepticism has to be the cars. Here's why. Just because an update is regarded as big and ambitious doesn't mean the car list will be. I always refer back to After Hours. An update so hyped up for the clubs and activities... only to provide a handful of poorly done road-cars, ruined by flags, bad sounds and/or poor detail, then a bunch of weaponized crap, and then some touch ups to a dozen of awful cars nobody drives anymore. It was such a terrible update in my eyes because of that. The clubs were okay, not great, and so were the activities. It wasn't terrible, and it actually makes you good money. But I hated that update because of the horrid car selection.

HOWEVER, since then (beginning with Arena Wars which was unexpected), Rockstar has delivered very strongly in the car department. The weakest was with the summer update, and that was obviously because of how this year went so that's not bad. However, I still cannot have high expectations because in the back of my mind I'm like "what if it's like After Hours."

Another reason though is, the island. I don't really see any tarmac roads, do you? This of course means, we're probably going to see a lot of more off-road/military/armored type vehicles. And if we do get a lot of vehicles in this update, I guarantee you part of it will be because of that. Do I think we'll see some more regular types of road cars? I mean, sure. But the problem is how many? I hope, we see at least 20 or something. You know, some sport classics/sports/supers/sedans/SUVs and a couple open wheel racers. Considering how this is their "Biggest" update, I'd like to see at least 30 in that department. But that's unlikely, and likely because a big portion of the new cars will probably be off-road/military/etc sh*t. And worse case scenario, we could only get like 10 regular road cars. That would really annoy me.

I mean, if the focus is this location, then the cars (not all of them) are likely gonna be geared towards this location too. With no tarmac. Just dirt. Not a good sign in my eyes. In a perfect world, we'd get just under 50 new vehicles. With a decent selection being for the island, and then most being like what we got in the original Diamond Casino update. But I certainly don't expect that.

Now moving away from cars...

Obviously free-roam is something people have been worried about. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I mean, obviously in SP I can just use a damn mod-menu, but we're talking GTA:Online. And then what are these activities, will they be anything worth doing? Or just something we forget about?

And lastly, the new music. I'm definitely not hyped. I actually liked iFruit Radio. But only half of the station (Meghan, City Girls, Travis Scott, etc). Danny Brown and some of that other, lesser known sh*t was annoying though. Are we going to get a lot of actual good, quality, expensive to license music with this update or is it going to be a bunch of sh*t I never heard of and kind of edgy, and/or rap focused, or something you would never hear outside of the actual game?

Don't get me wrong, I love indie music, actually most of the music I listen to is indietronica, dream pop, chillwave, deep house, etc. But the stuff Rockstar picks... I never heard of... it's not good... idk wtf it is. And they added a lot of music with the After Hours update and I listen to none of it. It's mediocre. I couldn't dance to that sh*t. Vladivostok FM from EFLC walks all over it, that sh*t would make me get turnt up in the club. The After Hours sh*t would make me fall asleep or leave early to go get something to eat.

Well... that's a lot. And despite all of that, I still am looking forward to what we may get in just under 2 weeks. :) Just that... my expectations are not high and I wouldn't be surprised if the update isn't all that...

Considering the image below, the island in which a cartel is located is most likely a parody or inspired of the Medillín Cartel, in which the gate of Cayo Perico (and the plane flying above) is without doubt a reference to Pablo Escobar's primary residence Hacienda Nápoles. Thus, the island is most likely a knock-off of Departamento de Antioquia, meaning we will literally be stationed in Colombia, fighting a bootleg Pablo Escobar as US government puppet mercenaries.

That's f*cking cool if you'd ask me, or maybe it's just my love for Narcos.

Edit: also, but perhaps trivial, a Jeep Wrangler looking car can be seen driving in the in-game image. In the first season of Narcos, Escobar was seen driving a Jeep Wrangler multiple times, both black, red and assumably white IRL. Could be another smart reference from the developers or just coincidental.

I'm cautious about the update

🤣

The most accurate way to describe my perception of every incoming update for GTAO ever post Heists. With the exception of Gunrunning and Smuggler's Run. The only DLCs to add another layer of gameplay that's unique and not derivative. At least not entirely. Sale missions aside. It's just so accurate it's hilarious. "Cautious". 😆 I can't help but laugh at that so much. You feel like excitement's coming in, kids? Well, think again! You can't be too safe, it's Rockstar Games after all. 😆

It's like the fine print on a product or contract. You really gotta pay attention! 😆 "Map expansion" was very misleading. Although yeah, yeah, Rockstar hasn't said it themselves. Still. Everyone referred to it that way. Regardless. It's a brand new playable area. And it's a waste.

OP is absolutely correct, and he's not alone. Bland? Boring? Not inaccurate. Going from sunny, warm Los Santos to a small tropical island? Which looks like a typical cartel boss's cliche oasis? Yeah. Nothing inspiring or exciting about it. And we pretty much know it's going to be just for the new heist. Yeah. Not excited. I'll be interested in the new clothing, weapons too perhaps. But again. YA GOTTA BE CAUTIOUS! 😆 If we're lucky female characters will get a hairdo that's 1" closer to the shoulders. 😆 And we might get some creative weapons. Something at least half as good as the Shotgun  Mk. II. But REMEMBER, CHILDREN! Safety first! 😆You could get hurt with anticipation if you're not careful. 😀

I launched the game again after around 9 months of not playing. Spawned in with a cage on me in Freemode. We can start with actually DOING SOMETHING about cheaters. 😀 You know, the people that have single-handedly R-A-P-E-D the health of this game's community and player base. The low-lives who crash and ruin your game in 9.5/10 sessions. NOT finding cheaters is so f*cking rare it should be deemed an ACHIEVEMENT IN THE f*ckING GAME. The sole reason I stopped playing in February. And of course the other being piss-poor DLC. Which isn't really a priority because of "MAWDUHZ".

But back on track. Yes, OP. If Pren was in charge at Caulk-Smoker Games; I would start off by taking the framework of Ludendorff. Or Ludendorff + surrounding North Yankton Area? We've all become accustomed to calling it North Yankton. But that's actually the state. The town from GTAV's intro is Ludendorff. Anyway, I would take the surrounding area and build upon the framework. Adding more traffic, more areas. Furthering the open-endedness of certain game mechanics introduced through more recent updates. Such as entering the FIB building and posing as an FIB agent. Entering any small bank you can find and robbing it.Or any convenience store. A deeper layer of open-world gameplay which is missing from even the base game. We get introduced to the Fleeca Job, and you would swear it's a great introduction to free-form small bank robbery. But it's not. It's just a one-off heist like all the others. Combine that with the permanent winterized environment of Ludendorff and you have the problem of the bland, cliche tropical environment of Cayo Perico solved. A perfect contrast to Los Santos. Freemode being introduced. New NPCs who really fit into the GTA Universe. Contact missions to go along with them. New Heists. The ability to use the Creator, of course. New Survivals unique to Ludendorff. Some unique vehicles and Jobs which can be launched from Ludendorff. From there, even more DLCs could expand North Yankton. But the main message I want to convey is the contrast in environment between Ludendorff/North Yankton and Los Santos. Where with Cayo Perico we get the opposite. Not only is it NOT fresh. It's also filled with that South American drug cartel base feeling that is the LAST thing I would want in a GTA update. I will check out the DLC, but i'm 99% sure I won't be investing any serious time in it, just as I didn't with the garbage Diamond Casino Heist DLC. I always play new PVE content on both characters. Never even bought an arcade on my second character. I was so drained by the haphazardness of that heist. Especially the HEIST part that I felt like dropping dead at times. Way, way too much unimaginative trash in this game  with no unique gameplay outside of businesses. With the most unique business being Air Freight. Although in the end, they all end up feeling like second jobs. There's a lot of work to be done in GTA. And the direction this DLC? Not surprising. I would be surprised more by the fact that they did something correctly or positive altogether, than the fact that they're doing something correctly or positively. "Liberty City being added to GTAOnline. Launching Summer 2021" would shock me. Not because that awesome, massive area is being added. But Rockstar are actually doing it. The action specifically, not the result would be more surprising. And before all of those dreams come true we still have the cancer to get rid of! 😐

Interesting thoughts and it is remarkable that the island is not set in the US when in the past it has often pointed out that GTA is in the US and will stay in the US.

Personally I'm not very into the tropical/carribean theme, so I am not that much excited about the new island, but I'm curious though.

If GTA wants to reinvent itself I'd favour a European metropolis like Paris or London, your thoughts about a future GTA reminds me too much of Just Cause.

This just looks so rundown.. look at that rusty tanker lol

You think that looks rundown just be thankful you are not getting Carcer City

Tbh, i loved manhunt's atmosphere.. it had a unique chaotic grey feel to it, similar to gta 3. The gfx back then with that sort of environment went hand in had I think plus that incredible ost.. turned blood into ice :)

I've been getting into Red Dead lately, so yeah the excitment factor hasn't really kicked in for me either.

tbh the doomday and the casino didnt really grab me as heist themes either and the thing that seems promising about this heist is more that it's a new system than any theming...hopefully they pull through on that one because these other heists do NOT feel good to play

What i look for in an update are more or less the content that is going to be sustainable. Do we need new music? oh my god yes. will it be good music? remember this is rockstar. will the enjoyment of the music die off in 2 months after we've done our grininding and screwing around for countless hours a day? most likely.

new map? when we first heard that most of us probably thought itd be the size of LS right? well a small island is more realistic and we cant fault them for that. Can we freeroam there? listen this is rockstar we're talking about who patches a glitch that launches your car across the map because it was fun.

what new vehicles are going to be added? how unique will they be? whats the pricetag?

our subs? hat new features beyond launching the heist will they bring?

what are the QoL changes?

the setting of the heist? we'll probably run it enough to where we all get tired of it in a month anyway.

Wasnt a fan of the doomsday heists, neither the casino heists.

Did like a few vehicles that came with it but thats about it.

I don't have too much info for the upcoming DLC (except some rumors and pics) so my guess is I wont like the upcoming heists either.

What I do like is the new area after years and years of waiting, and where we might be able to just chill out like on a holiday.

Would love to take some offroading vehicle and cruise through the jungle.

Maybe some vehicles will come that we will actually like.
