Bad Lag on High End Laptop

I just recently bought a new HP Omen 8g ram 1tb HDD an i7 processor and Nvidia 1050 graphics card. I've lowered the settings in GTA to the minimal on everything. I've turned off vsync. I've reinstalled the game. The constant lag makes this game almost unplayable. I played on a ryzen 3 just before switching to am i7 and somehow it ran slightly better. I don't understand, I've looked up the specs and I should be able to play on max settings, but I'm barely playing on minimal. Help me, computer wizards?

I've always read to turn it off. What exactly does vsync do and why should it be on to improve performance? Also, with my laptop specs should I be able to play lag free?

It's better explained over here: I had the same problem too. Basically our systems (yours and mine) are too good for this old game. We're able to get way more fps than the game can handle. Vsync turns it down a notch.

So I turned Vsync back on, still terrible lag. I even have the settings down, although my laptop should be more than enough to run at ultra. The video memory is only at 1066mb/4095mb. Any other ideas on lag reduction?

What model CPU is in your laptop? please be more specific than "intel i7" there are a few hundred different Intel i7s by now and they all come with serial numbers, and they range from very fast to very slow.

Is it this one by any chance? https://www.amazon.com/HP-OMEN-15-6-FHD-i7-7700HQ/dp/B073WQT53D

You should be able to see the exact CPU model in DxDiag.

Also, do you have the laptop plugged in while playing GTA, and have you set it to high performance power plan?

In game, make sure Extended Distance Scaling is set to minimum (advanced graphics)

Go into your NVIDIA 3D Graphics settings and force the main GPU for use with the GTA5.exe program. If the GTA5.exe program isn't listed, just browse to it or add it from recently used programs.

I wonder if your machine is attempting to use the onboard graphics processor from Intel rather than your dedicated GPU.

Thank you Airwolf! Here is the processor info: i7-8750H CPU @ 2.20GHz (12 CPUs) ~2.2GHz

DirectX 12

Gaffa, in the NVIDIA control panel under 3D settings, it was on "Use Global Setting (High-performance NVIDIA processor)". There are two other options, "High-Performance NVIDIA processor" and "Integrated graphics". Should I use the NVIDIA setting that doesn't say "use global setting"? Thank you guys for your help!

Yes this very much sounds like the game is trying to run off of your "Integrated graphics" (a very basic GPU that's built into your CPU, good enough for windows but not good enough for most games)

- Do the thing Gaffa said with the NVIDIA control panel, set it to that "High-Performance NVIDIA processor" option

- If it doesn't change things in game, you can add command line parameters to force the game to use your 1050 GPU and a specific DirectX version:

Commandline parameters can be added to the "commandline.txt" file in the root of the game folder. If this file doesn't exist, you can create it by right clicking in the game install directory, select New and select Text Document. Rename this file to commandline.txt. Please see below for the various command lines that can be used.

You can use one of the below to tell the game to use your 1050, idk what order your system sees the available GPU options in, so try each and check in game for any differences:
-adapter 0

-adapter 1

To force a DirectX version you can use one of these, you can try them all or just go with DX10_1 wich seems to be the best option for most setups.

-DX10
-DX10_1

-DX11

Combining the two you should end up with a commandline.txt similar to this

-adapter 0
-DX10_1

Once you got that you should have solved the lag issue, if not you can always try more command line stuff, just be wary that some of it can really screw with the performance, so i'd stick to just those two and tweak graphics settings a bit in-game if needed, or read some guide to learn what other options would be good for your system.

If after doing the command line stuff you still have lag issues, contact R* support
