How do I play .ADF files?

Recommended Posts

Abadede

Hi!

I want to listen the radio stations when I'm not playing Vice City. In GTA3 the stations were in .wav format. But in Vice City the stations are in .adf format. What software do I need to play .adf?

I've google search but didn't fine a solution.

Thanks

Yes, I've also tried File EXT and they don't know either.  Its some new format, probably from RAD game tools or Miles audio, check their sites.  I'm too lazy.

.adf is a proprietary format, you won't be able to extract such files or convert them to MP3. Your best bet is to either buy the Vice City soundtrack or download the MP3s from somewhere.

.adf + my username = .mp3  :p

If this is indeed a new format, then it was pretty inconsiderate to choose .adf for its extension... The whole world knows .adf as Amiga Disk File, and hijacking the extension won't work. (Just look at MrSid - they tried to use the .sid extension about a year ago, and now hardly anybody knows what MrSid is, but everyone knows the .sid music from C64 :)

I just wrote a small tool to convert (decrypt, actually ;)) the VC .ADFs to MP3s... I submitted it to GTAWIP, perhaps it's going to show up there. I called the utility "Vicesimus Alter"... which is a small pun. :)

Calling it "encryption" is a bit of a stretch doncha think?  :D

Xoring a file with a single byte is akin to replacing a picture with it's negative image.

.adf is an amiga disk image and you can view them just like an archive with the correct software (ADF Opus) I thought they might've stored them like an archive in these at first as it would be harder to work out than .img files but it didn't work :(

Coloring, maybe. An adf is an mp3 with a nice shade of green.. er, I mean 0x22 applied to it. :D  If you look at an ascii dump of an adf, it looks just like an ascii dump of a regular mp3, just using different characters. This is fairly apparent in the first 2kb of VCPR.adf (Especially the first 40 bytes.) .... Well, if you're familiar with what an mp3 file can look like. Or maybe it's just me. I dunno. The first time I looked an adf I thought, "Man, this is an mp3 file, just with wacky characters."

its not that hard... try reading the vicesimus.alter_jerryking.zip\vicesimusalter\Readme.txt that came with it

EDIT: woops, didnt read all of your post. Heh, just like open windows explorer and drag drop the gta3 audio file ontop of the decoder app.

You mean Vice City audio file right? ;) Well, it's not working for me. I dragged the selected radio station over the viceimus.exe, the program loads with 'converting blah.. blah.. file' then the  program finishes but the file is still .adf.

The documentation is pretty shoddy.  So I got creative.  I wanted to create an mp3 of flashfm so I did the following.

-Copied the flash.adf file from the audio folder to the folder with vicesimius

- made a shortcut to vicesimius in the same folder

- right click the shortcut pick properties then click the program tab

- then I added flash.adf to the end of the cmd line

so it looks like this:

D:\DOCUME~1\Cory\Desktop\VICESI~1.ALT\VICESI~1\VICESI~1.EXE flash.adf

click the shortcut and you're good to go it takes maybe 3seconds, and I'm playing the mp3 right now

good stuff :D

The documentation tells you everything you need to know. It's a simple converter. It doesn't even need the output filename. You just run it with the name of the .adf file as a command line parameter. That's all there's to it. Perhaps it's mystifying to those born in the windoze era, but I cannot know that.

(For the unfortunate souls who actually struggle to use the windoze exploder to work with files - get a decent file manager. From www.farmanager.com, for instance.)

I rewrote this a little, and submitted the updated, final version to GTAWIP. The most important change is the automatic naming of the output file (KCHAT.ADF -> KCHAT.MP3)

I'm not a programmer, but everywhere that I can recall xoring was described as or referred to as "the simplest encryption", "basic method of encoding", and so on - and since encryption is defined as scrambling data with a defined algorithm, then I'd say that xoring does fit the description...

nice one :)

Simple to go into a dos box, rename the executable for brevity (to v.exe in my case), and type "v flash.adf" then rename the converted thing to flash.mp3...

2 minutes later, and a nice full set of stations on MP3 :D

Ok, I just added the two updated files.  I noticed that you labeled one of them final, so I will be deleting the other two shortly.  I'm also assuming that you, jerryking, and Jaromir Krol are all the same guy?  Just wondering which name I should put down as author.

Certainly :O) They are:

- my nickname here

- the name of the e-mail account :D

- my name

The version of the program which is 75226 bytes long is the final one... at least the final so far :p. It names the output file automatically now, and works faster than the previous one. I don't think there is anything else that should be added... Perhaps an easier way to do the MP3->"ADF" conversion (if you run the program on an .mp3, it will "convert" it into the "ADF format" - so to say ;) - since it's just the same simple encryption, but because of the way file extensions are handled by the program, the input MP3 cannot have an .mp3 extension - perhaps I'll change that, if I feel like doing it ;))

This version can "convert" an MP3 into this ADF "format" - as I said, using VA on an MP3 file will result in an output file which will be "encrypted" like the original ADFs, but because the extension is handled automatically by the program, you cannot run it on a file with an ".mp3" extension - it must be different (That is because if you were to run "VA.exe MyFaveMusic.mp3", the program would try to read from *and* write to the file "MyFaveMusic.mp3" at the same time, which wouldn't be very healthy for it :-D). I might even fix that, but would anyone really need it?

Err, someone who apparently took a look at the new executable, just asked me that... so I suppose I might as well explain, should anyone else feel curious: the strange references to "Sammy Gravano", "Dutch Schultz", "Will Graham", "Francis Dolarhyde", et al., are simply names of variables, constants, etc., that the compiler left in the overlay of the program. They have no other use, really. ;)
