If a direct competitor to GTA would appear, what would you want to see in it?

Say someone appears with a new game thats going head to head directly with GTA. What would you need from that video game to take you away from GTA?

A better focus on single player and regular updates to keep it fresh. Mod support, especially for consoles because I love my console mods. Free next gen upgrade. And a more interesting open world that isn't just pretty to look at.

A more serious realistic tone. This may not seem much, but Grand Theft Auto at it's core identity is a satire of American pop culture. What I would most like to see in a competitor is a more serious tone where adverts/commercials are not satirical, nor radio hosts and the sorts. Even GTA III and IV, some of the more serious titles, had comical elements in them such as PetsOvernight(dot)com and BabiesOvernight(dot)com respectively. What makes McDonald's and KFC competitors for example is that they are both fast food restaurants that offer different menus. Therefore in order to establish a proper competitor, any sort of GTA syle titles must take a different tone and identity, and thus in this case it may be better to set the games in real cities or at the very least ones that are alternative counterparts. If you went with real cities, then New York City would be used instead of Liberty City, or at the very least you could call it something such as Gotham or any other New York nickname to exercise more artistic license with fictional names.

I'd love to see a hardcore RPG mmo type game come up against GTA. It would be great to have a game where you could create your own criminal and choose a city to climb the ranks of your chose criminal organization betraying people, leveling skill sets in certain criminal activities to progress to bigger things. Out of GTA V came FiveM, cause people love RP and realism, would love to see something like this come up with the dark gritty tone of GTA IV

More focus on crime and criminal organizations. Go touch on themes where GTA doesn't want to go, is afraid to go, or has barely scratched the surface.

It's obvious that the main argument would be a location outside of the United States to stand out from the mass

no interest in doing the same American universe knowing that Rockstar is already doing it very well with his GTA franchise

An actual slummy ghetto story, none of this "rags to riches" optimistic bullcrap, where you sling crack and pop caps in asses and the best you can hope for is a decent house to rent and a 1987 Caprice with 22"s

It'd have to be a mix of scarface the world is yours, saints row 1 and 2 and gta 3/san andreas/4. Multiple detailed cities with engaging characters and a decent plot. Working my way up from a henchman to a crime boss in depth customization to detail what kind of crime rackeets they focus on. Being able to detail how my gang dresses and what cars they drive and what weapons they use. Saints row 2 was on a good start with this.

Idk man it’s an aesthetic I was all too familiar with unfortunately back in my early middle school years. Some people don’t wanna pull themselves out of the ghetto, they just wanna make the most of their situation.

Personally, i'd like to see a Canadian setting

Maybe throw in story elements of both VC & SA, i'll have to see it first imo

Cypress Hill - Insane in the Brain starts blasting outta the $400.00 sound system in the '87 Caprice

but seriously tho, SA should have kept the ghetto-esque mentality

This. This is what is required.

A game outside if USA.

This game is set in a country called Bangladesh. The map is Dhaka City, based on Dhaka City.

Everything the GTA franchise lacks. Places outside of USA. Real-life names.

I hope this game lives upto my expectations.

Idk man there’s a lot of people who are bitching about V not being ghetto enough and who want a more ghetto game, why not appeal to them more than “here’s 4 gangbanging missions now to fly jets”

  • more cartoony or artistic style, especially in characters, also drop mocap entirely in favour of animation similar to pixar/dreamworks/etc or cutscenes in driv3r/parallel lines/san francisco (however i don't want cartoony cars, buildings and many objects)
  • it should be more gang focused (have them at least 50)
  • no casual activities except going out on bars and get drunk or smoke weed
  • implement parkour that combines mirrors edge and watch dogs 2
  • if possible set it in France (in near future if needed) and parody french pop culture

It would like a lot. CJ is Rockstar's most popular character a dude from the hood and people from all over liked him. Yeah the game did take a turn and went a little goofy but even with the street stuff in San Andreas a lot of people enjoyed it. A game focused around the ghetto again but with no goofy sh*t would be very popular.

That was the stuff I liked about San Andreas' story, but then it jumped the shark somewhat.

I think if a GTA competitor were to come along with a grounded, more serious street gang/ghetto story as its central focus that would be some worthy competition. Also unlike CJ or even Franklin who both wanted to escape for a better life I think it would be cool to see it from the perspective of someone who lives and dies in the ghetto.

Not everyone is able to escape for greener pastures per say.

It always amazes me that people like CJ as a character, one of the worst characters I've ever seen in any video game.

No offense to my friend Algonquin Assassin but to me Niko Bellic takes the cake.

CJ will forever be the classic character, not the best but far from the worst. Tommy Vercetti is the best ever GTA character hands down. Claude comes second and Trevor (yes Trevor) as a third. CJ might be tied with Lance Vance for the fourth place. As a protagonist he takes fourth place.

If a competitor to GTA comes, it NEEDS to have hubcaps flying off as you drift into turns.

Any GTA protagonist > Lamar > Michael  > Any GTA side character (not V) > Franklin > Any GTA antagonist > Any GTA Ped NPC >  Any GTA V side character (not Lamar) > Trevor.

  • onfoot movement that actually feels good and feels direct. i'll take snappiness over 'realism' that feels like im controlling a sh*tty marionette any day
  • a good selection of cool fun fictional cars is also pretty important. i want to see two or more real life cars combined into a single ingame car and if the game can pull this off consistently, then thats pretty good
  • fun artstyle. i have a very specific look in my head but tbh as long as its nonrealistic in a fun way that'll do. big bonus if it runs on low end machines AND ages gracefully, though
  • good sense of humor, tbh. one of the big caveats of GTA is that its just so miserable and even when its trying to be funny it rarely is

CRAZY AL WARD

For this scenario, i'd like to see Two different games

Game #1: Canadian based GTA-esque game series

  • Canadian city locations would be a Great start (Ottawa/Gatineau area, Bathurst, Moncton, Montreal, Vancouver, etc.), the location is key. From the maritimes & the midwest, to the west coast, anything is possible
  • The asthetics are a secondary key item, from Autumn to Winter weather, to the game's year setting
  • Soundtrack must fit the setting of the area (East coast, West coast, the maritimes & the midwest)
  • The possibility of fictional brands are a must (mainly because it would be easier on the game devs budget & give way for fresh creativity)

This next one is an oddball of the two options, but it hasn't been done as of yet

Game #2: Anime based Mmorpg GTA-esque game

  • A new area location with it's own unique style (I'd personally would like to see the state of Minnesota in this type of game)
  • Character creation would be a major key in this type of game.
  • Language selection would be great for those who want to experience the game in another language.
  • Easter eggs & references to certain media, people or places would be interesting to see imo.
  • Replayability would great for both games mentioned above.

That's all i'd like to see imo
