I don't see the switch in the center of the dash that's a bit closer to the passenger side.. but sounds like the fan/blower switch. Interior of this Squaddie looks much smaller than the real deal. But they did do some great detail here. Gauges are about spot on. Someone at Rockstar likes their HMMWVs.

The reality is it can't be a 1 to 1 the real truck. The Humvee is actually intellectual property, and if the likeness is too similar that's copyright violation. 

 

Rockstar has to have some creative freedom in creating their own.

 

If you compare what Rockstar has created to be the Humvee stand in versus so many other games out there, its pretty clear they did it right and went fairly authentic.

 

I don't think you'll find many games that have done it better short of games like Arma that actually got  license to use the real brand.

Kind of wish you could add an overhead roof to the back of the squaddie for better protection of passengers. But still my favorite vehicle this update has brought to the game.

I almost wish this had been a vanilla launch car back in 2013, so there’d be an excuse to add an ‘updated’ version more in line with a Humvee. This being launched so late in the life cycle of GTAO means it’s most likely the closesr we’ll ever get to an H1. An ugly hybrid bastard of an H2 with some Humvee motifs. Ugh

Funny that you mention that, because AM General actually sued Activision in 2017 for featuring Humvees in Call of Duty and actually lost.

 

It's even funnier when you realize that, in spite of Activision actually winning the case, they played it safe and started to depict guns and vehicles in Modern Warfare (2019) with different details on purpose to not infringe copyright.

 

Even Modern Warfare 2 Remastered, which kept the realistic designs of all guns, actually changed the Humvee model for a generic armored truck.

 

I still think there's an actual possibility for a proper Patriot Classic, if anything, because it would be rather easy to do by taking the Squaddie as a base.

If GM/AMG didn’t sue them over the Patriot H1 in GTA 3-VCS, and didn’t sue them over the Patriot H2 in 4-5, there’s no reason to assume they’d sue over another H1-alike in 5. Copyright issues on video game/animation stuff can be skirted so long as you avoid using specific design motifs. Jeep for example is extremely particular about their grille design. So literally the only thing devs have had to do to avoid lawsuits is turn the grille pattern sideways. Look at the Mesa in older GTAs specifically, 1:1 Wrangler save for the horizontal grille. You can copyright specific aspects of a design, but you can’t copyright an entire general shape. Too broad. Can copyright a specific headlamp design, but you can’t copyright all headlamps and then claim infringement on any design that even remotely looks like yours, see? So long as it isn’t a direct copy there’s nothing GM or AMG can do about it. Falls under ‘parody/fair use’ and all that

Technically they were sued for selling Humvee toys, but they did bring up the in game assets to bolster their lawsuit.

 

I know previously AM General have licensed numerous video game depictions of their IP. Considering how a Humvee would be depicted, I've always thought they were very generous with their license. Regular auto makers put pretty extreme restrictions on their cars in games (nobody can die in the car, the car can't be too damaged, etc.) that AM General never seemed to require. 

 

Even though I actually agree Activision was in the wrong for selling the toys, it's a great victory for games that they lost the case.

 

That being said, fair use copyright has it's restrictions.

You're entirely relying on a judges opinion in that situation, and jurisdictions are going to have widely different views on it.

 

A real Humvee in GTA would not be considered fair use, because as it was established fair use of IP is in things like historical or realistic narrative. Parody and review is also protected, but a video game asset doesn't really fall under that.

 

Since the US military uses Humvees it falls within fair use that a video game, either historical or fictional, that is authentically depicting the US military would show Humvees because that's how it is in real life. This is exactly how Hollywood gets around the issue.

 

GTA is not an authentic depiction of the US military. It's a parallel universe of satirical commentary. 

 

Even if it were consequence free to have Humvees in game, Rockstar still wouldn't make it look that similar because Rockstar doesn't want to depict AM General, the real world company, they want to depict their fictional Mammoth company. That way they can control that company's history, its behavior, its products, etc. They want that creative control.

The point I was making is R* knows how to make cars similar enough without infringing it. Most copyright lawsuits are only ruled on when it’s a direct copy, or uses the name without permission. If R* wasn’t sued because of the current Patriot with is 85% identical to an H2, there’s no reason to assume they’d be sued over an H1 with the same level of accuracy. Literally the only real issues with the Squaddie that I see are the front wheel placement, and the fact it’s a 2 door.

Hopefully this leads to a proper Patriot Classic, they've done 80% of the model work for one. It never hurts to ask, that's what got us the Caracara 4x4.

I wonder how many people will Probably try to recreate the Squaddie from the old Warstock photo before it was cut? and.... Maybe for some gone in 60 seconds fans. that Hummer Sphinx and Mirror man they tried to boost..aand got a snake in there
