Don't get me wrong: I am glad they are doing anything, I'm glad it's somewhat ambitious, and unless this proves to be really terrible, I will welcome another casino-style heist. My friends and I have had dozens of hours of fun doing all the casino approaches, the elite challenges, etc. That there's a new landmass involved in this one, even if it's maybe not free roamable, is neat. But this is not at all a true map expansion. My guess is that it's just the best they can do with either limited hardware, limited budget and dev resources, or (most likely) both. And as long as Online continues to make money hand over fist, year after year, I'm not sure why they'd bother to add an entire new map for us to explore. Ever. Maybe that changes when GTA VI finally comes along, but I doubt it will prior to then.

There is no reason to assume new area would cost extra resources. Even like it is, parts of the map load and unload when they are needed.

 

I think we really only have 2 options.

A) the island will be in the corner of the map, and we will be able to visit it freely, without leaving session.

B) the island is only available inside mission, with load screen.

 

GTA can't do anything else. I doubt they would add anything to what would be core functionality, when they are scared to touch simple scripts, in fear of breaking it.

 

At the moment it seems we can rule out A. Nothing in the trailer suggest the island is close to LS, and it's even dubbed secret private island, IIRC.

 

Even B can give us some freedom, there might be some scoping missions. And we would be able to do them alone or with friends. And maybe do them at any phase of the heist. And we might be able to bring our current vehicle. But we would be technically 'in mission'.

I say this because back before the Southern San Andreas Super Sport Series was released, i accidently predicted the existance of the Vapid Dominator GTX a near 12-24 hours Before the Dominator GTX was leaked.

So let's say I'm on xbox and go out and get a next gen xbox series x.

Let's say i am running the Xbox 1 version of the game (the one we are all playing currently).

When stand alone version comes are you saying I have to buy it even though I have been playing it for a few years (and bought a shark card or 2) over those years?

How does that make any sense?

What if i buy the next gen version of GTAV - do I still have to pay for stand alone version of GTAO? If so, why would I buy the next gen story-mode, I've played through it at least 4 times now.

If it were free to download forever, I'd say the whole reason for creating a standalone version is to get in the players who don't want to spend the money on GTA V itself for just a specific monetized game mode.

 

I can't imagine them introducing a membership cost for GTA Online after 7 years... that would risk tanking the playerbase unwilling to pay for something that's been free for over half a decade. So all that leaves is a discount price in buying JUST GTA Online, with MAYBE a few incentive bonuses when the time comes given how infamous the game is in giving too much info at once newer players and little to no direction. Sort of like, buy GTA Online standalone and it comes bundled with its own more modern version of the Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack, and with what seems be a permanent move away from businesses being the primary focus and a new Heist update after only a year, I could imagine these being sold for free being the main selling points;

Wouldn't the lack of a freeroam Island actually be software limitations? My XBone processes better graphics on larger maps all the time. Just look at RDR2O, ever gone off map? Its huge. Low poly, but huge. Probably just semantics, but I don't get why current systems wouldn't be able to handle a map addition to an 7+ year old game. I get the game runs on a different engine, but again isnt that a software limitation?

  On top of that, didnt R* say way back when that they designed GTAV with expansion in mind? I think it was a Leslie Benzies interview. I was always under the impression map expansions werent possible because of last gens hardware.

    Feeling pretty confident we can pilot this Submarine. Because if it were a static object like the yacht it would be indestructible needing no reason for versatile "firepower". A missile system would be enough. However, a submersible MOC that can be destroyed...that would need all sorts of fire power to defend against Strombergs and other Submarines.

    If its static, I hope there is an underwater version of Piracy Prevention, and I hope we get a bedroom with a view. 

  Really hope we can upgrade the gun on that dinghy

It's a full on re-release. Yeah, we'll have to buy it again (aside those that get the free one on PS5 of course) to play the latest DLC. 

 

As for sense, lol. Money. That's all. R*/T2 are looking to fully rinse it in that sense.

 

The version we have now will be fully backward compatible until then, probably afterwards too for story mode, but who knows. If they add stuff to story mode for the re-release, I believe we'll have to buy again but I'm not sure they'll add much and the standalone version of online will be their focus with the exclusive DLC etc.

 

I assume if we buy next gen GTA V, it'll come with online like usual so no need to buy both.

 

Regarding the online part, it'll all transfer over just like from old gen to PS4 era as that's saved R*'s end (in case you were unsure).

 

I hope I made more sense for ya, Buddy, lol. But take it all with a pinch of salt as much is unknown/speculation of course.

On one hand, I see little reason to introduce a membership right now. It will be extremely unpopular to the players as players generally aren’t ready to accept a system like that right now (makes economic & long term growth sense, but unreasonable as of now for consumers). R* made incredible money with GTA V and Online, getting more money is probably not necessary right now.

 

On the other hand, they might actually need more money. Who knows what investments they are making? Can be talented Human Resources, new buildings and land, or, you know, large quantities of top-end Mac Pro towers that costs close to $70,000 Canadian dollars per machine (I’m not kidding)...

No it will be free forever as long as you download it within the first 3 months.

One could say: If the island expansion really is a problem in free roam, then we would have been better off with a complete remake of Paleto Bay. No extra landmass needed but a better use of the current land.

I know, I mean the 3 month period is how long we've got to claim our free copy, not that it'll last 3 months then need to buy after. 

 

Just like a PS+ game, it's there forever to play once claimed, but you've only got the month to get it, but GTA will be there for 3.

Isnt there a point where LS stops being rendered entirely I can remember flying out very far and looking back to see nothing surely the island can fit in the open ocean in the middle of nowhere. From what I can recall there is quite a bit of distance before your plane breaks apart.

That's exactly what I think, man, in my opinion the hardware cannot be used as an impediment to the island not being in free mode. The current generation can process many games with GIANT maps, I can't understand how GTAO would be an exception. RDO has a giant map to render and you can see the rendered horizon from afar, from absurdly far!

- The mod of the LC map made for GTA V on PC, and attached to the main map, can run on PC with hardware inferior to Xone and PS4, honestly I can't see the consoles not being able to handle an expansion of the map placed far away from the coast.
