Grand Theft Auto III

Liberty City Remix

A Concept Thread by @Big Fat Paulie

Main Theme Song

Liberty City, October 2001

You've been betrayed and left for dead and now you find yourself facing certain doom. But Fate has given you a second chance and now you're free to roam the streets, make the right connections and eventually get payback.

Alright, here it is. A concept thread that I'm surprised nobody has tried to do earlier. This is a concept for what a full remake of Grand Theft Auto III would look like in my mind. GTA III was one of the most influential video games of all time and it put the GTA franchise on the map but it's also aged the most poorly of all the major GTA games.

You play as Claude Speed, a young career criminal who has been betrayed and left for dead as a fall guy by your ex-girlfriend Catalina after a botched bank robbery. As fate would have it, as you were being hauled off to jail, the same police convoy that was transporting you also held a high value target for the infamous Colombian Cartel. They attacked the convoy and took the target as a hostage while killing the cops in the van and leaving you and an associate of yours to your own devices. Now you've made a run for it and are now free to roam in Liberty City.

However, this is not merely a step-by-step carbon copy retread of GTA III but a total remake/reimagining of it complete with new gameplay features and a map that is more detailed and expansive in its scope. New vehicles, weapons, side missions, gangs, soundtracks, characters and storylines will appear in addition to all the classic ones that made the original PS2 game into the icon that it is.

All of the original cast of characters make their return plus entirely new ones, familiar faces from other games in the series, and two particular characters that make a shocking surprise comeback and play a major role in the game's wider storyline.

The 3D Universe's iteration of Liberty City makes its return and retains the gritty. gloomy, and often downright eerie feel that the original game's version of Liberty City had. It is set in October and the autumn weather is in full effect along with the colors of the leaves. Certain buildings and neighborhoods have Halloween decorations and at night you can find some pedestrians roaming the streets in costume, presumably heading to and from Halloween parties

The in-game map is divided into four districts with each one roughly corresponding to a different type of area. There is Portland Island (industrial), Staunton Island (commercial), Shoreside Vale (residential) and Upstate Liberty (rural)

The next several posts will go into further detail on the gameplay, weapons and vehicles, the in-game radio stations with their licensed music tracks, the characters of the game and the setting itself as a whole. Watch this space.

This would be kinda like the GTA equivalent to Mafia: Definitive Edition.

I wonder if some plotholes from III, Advance and LCS are gonna be addressed in this concept?

Welcome to Liberty City

Where the only dirty word is hope....

It's a harsh world out there on the mean streets of Liberty City and you have to watch yourself out there and familiarize yourself with the area as a whole. There's plenty of places you need to know about and people you need to be aware of. Here's some info that will be extremely useful out there.

Weaponry & Armor

A polite society is a well-armed society, especially in a place like Liberty City. If you need to get yourself a weapon, there's plenty of places to go to. For starters, there's Ammu-Nation, which sells guns and has stores in Portland Island, Staunton Island, Shoreside Vale, and Upstate Liberty. If you want something that's up close and doesn't require ammo, there's the hardware store chain Screw This! which sells plenty of tools that can be used as melee weapons and materials that you can use to fortify your safehouse if you need to.

For more specialty items, there's Phil's Arsenal in the Rockford neighborhood of Staunton Island for the more heavy-grade equipment and Stonewall J's Antiques in the Pike Creek neighborhood of Shoreside Vale for relics, curios, and more exotic arms and armor.

Here's a selection of the arms and armor you can find within Liberty City. Some of the guns have their real-life equivalents listed next to them in parentheses while armor types have their armor value listed instead. In GTA III: Liberty City Remix, armor acts as a second set of hit points to soak up the damage instead of your actual HP. Once the armor's gone, then any further attacks will affect your HP directly.

Melee

1. Blackjack

2. Switchblade

3. Baseball Bat

4. Hammer

5. Crowbar

6. Police Baton

7. Combat Knife

8. Hatchet

9. Woodcutter's Axe

10. Machete

11. Katana

12. Chainsaw

Pistols

1. Saturday Night Special (Rohm RG-38)

2. Service Pistol (Beretta M9)

3. The American Classic (Colt M1911A1)

2. SMG (IMI Uzi)

3. Tactical SMG (H&K UMP45)

1. Chinese Service Rifle (Norinco Type 56)

2. Assault Rifle (Colt M16A3)

2. Lever-Action Rifle (Marlin Model 336)

2. Grenade Launcher (Niktor MGL)

Body Armor

1. Leather Jacket (+10 Armor Points)

2. Stab Vest (+20 Armor Points)

3. Kevlar Vest (+50 Points)

4. Tactical Riot Gear (+100 Points)

Transportation

There's plenty of ways to travel in and around Liberty City, including cars, trucks, vans, motorcycles, boats, trains, and aircraft as well. All the vehicles from GTA III reappear, as do all of the vehicles from Vice City (except the Cuban Hermes or Haitian Voodoo) and Liberty City Stories (excluding the Sindacco Argento. The Forelli Excess only appears in a few specific story missions and doesn't show up anywhere else)

Here's the list of vehicles you'll find in Liberty City Remix, and this list will be continually updated until it is complete so keep an eye on it.

Vehicles marked with an asterisk only appear in story missions

Safehouses

Throughout the game, you'll have all sorts of places to stay if you need to lay low. The first safehouse you start at is Eddie's Warehouse in Portland Island near the Red Light District and Hepburn Heights and you can unlock additional safehouses in Staunton Island, Shoreside Vale, and Upstate Liberty as you progress through the story missions. Other properties can be purchased instead and these can also be customized and fortified as well, unlike the ones gained solely through the storyline.

Clothing

You may have your default "street clothes" but you can also buy plenty of spiffy threads if you got the cash. Some of these items will be sold as individual articles of clothing but there are also whole outfits that can be delivered to your safehouse after the completion of certain missions or activities.

Here's just a few of the clothing stores you can find in Liberty City and the apparel they sell

1. Binco (Cheap clothing, casual wear)

2. The End Zone (Athletic clothing)

3. Sub-Urban (Hip-Hop and skater fashion)

4. Zip (Higher end casual wear, "preppy" fashion)

5. Victim (Goth, Metalhead, Punk, and Raver fashions)

6. Prospero (Costumes, Cosplay, Period Dress, and Novelty wear)

7. Perseus (Formal, Semi-Formal, and Business Attire)

There's also several outfits that can be unlocked via missions, both storyline and side activities. The default outfit at the start of the game is the "Street Attire", comprised of a black windbreaker, a dark gray T-shirt, green cargo pants, and cheap tennis shoes.

Very nice! In this edition, are there Darkel missions, a mission where you have to kill Donald Love instead of Love's Disappearance, buskers/street musicians, useable soda machines, some vehicles from San Andreas, children, teenagers, and elderly people as pedestrians, a vehicle called the Vapid Taurus based on the late 1990s and early 2000s Ford Taurus, school buses, pets and animals, new cheats, new Easter eggs, references, and secrets, a realistic amount of vehicles in traffic, the Seminole (based off the Canis Seminole Frontier), cameras for taking pictures, the Liberty Penitentiary, the ability to eat at restaurants to regain health, a golf course in Upstate Liberty, the Panto, certain buildings now have interiors, blue and white police cars, removed songs on the radio, the Brigham, the Koala (Fiat Panda), the BF Ladybird (Volkswagen Beetle), a country music station, the Karin Wales (Toyota Camry), a Russian district like in GTA 4, the Vapid Eagle (1960 Ford Falcon), the ability to put silencers on certain guns, some vehicles from GTA 5, a parody of the Trump Tower called the Love Tower, parts of Upstate Liberty inspired by the New York Capital Region, religious pedestrians, the ability to watch TV, the TV Van with LC News livery, the Cabby (based on the Blista/Minivan), takedowns while using melee weapons, vehicles returning from GTA 1 and GTA 2, and useable taxis? Also, can you make a cover for this concept?

1. Darkel is coming back along with Curtly and he plays a major role in the story alongside Catalina, Miguel, and a few old familiar faces from some of the other games.

As for what happens to Donald Love, I'm not going to spoil anything.

2. Yes, there will be a country music station as well as a classic rock station and plenty of other new radio stations and cut ones as well. Some songs from LCS will be added to the playlists of certain stations like Double Clef FM, MSX, and K-Jah.

3. Upstate Liberty is partly inspired by Albany as well as the rural parts of New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. There will be other areas as well, including Liberty Pentitiary, the "Ghost Town" section and a lot of woodland area as well.

4. There will be new Easter Eggs, new secrets, and even "myth" elements as well

5. Useable soda machines and interiors will be a thing

6. Police cars will use the same color scheme as they did in GTA III's original release. I like the black and white look better.

7. Several vehicles from San Andreas and Vice City Stories will return as well, although I'm still deciding on which ones. There will also be new vehicles as well

8. There are parts of the city not seen in the original GTA III, including a Russian district and an Irish area. Love Tower will be there as well, but it'll be more like Rockefeller Center (since Donald Love always seemed more like a Rupert Murdoch or a Ted Turner figure despite his name)

9. Religious pedestrians will be present, as will elderly pedestrians, teens, and at night, there will be costumed pedestrians since it's set in October (Halloween and all that) and many places will have Halloween decorations

10. Animals will also be present, mostly in Upstate Liberty but there are smaller animals like rats, birds, dogs, and cats in the main parts of the city and you'll occasionally see deer, turkeys, or wolves wander into the less densely populated parts of Shoreside Vale

11. Claude can swim during the daytime and there is sea life as well, It's too dangerous to swim at night for a variety of reasons, although if Claude can steal a small submarine, he can traverse the waters at night without instantly dying.

12. TV will be present, as will movies. It'd be similar to the in-game TV and movies from GTA IV and GTA V. There might also be in-game books as well, as in actual full-length texts the players can read if they wish to do so, similar to the books in The Elder Scrolls games or the files in Resident Evil.

Some of these are simply notes or documents that can give them crucial info for the game or provide background info and certain things can be unlocked by reading these books and documents. Other texts are actual public domain literature

13. Soda machines and restaurants will be a thing

14. There will be a seven-star wanted level system.

15. Certain elements that were only mentioned in the original game like the Zaibatsu Corporation, the Planetarium nightclub, or the Maibatsu Monstrosity SUV will be actually present.

To an extent, the story will be expanded upon in most places and changed in others, namely regarding the new district of Upstate Liberty and some new areas in the admittedly barebones Shoreside Vale

Yes

This means you could do your very own No Russian in GTA. Also, since you suck at coding and graphics, why not "hire" someone who is good at making GTA logos, maps, and covers, to make the cover and logo?

I wonder if LCFR is gonna be featured as a standalone station from Chatterbox, complete with some different shows from its LCS iteration?

I'm pretty sure Heartland Values with Nurse Bob became a hit syndicated TV show after being taken off the radio.

LCFR is definitely coming back along with Chatterbox, a return of K-Chat and The Electron Zone plus a new iteration of "Pressing Issues" and a parody of Glenn Beck

WTF why would you wanna do a no russian in GTA

Also OP, why not make the civilain/stock versions of the Argento and Exsess spawn regularly? I get why you don't want the gang versions to spawn but it'd be a shame to leave out their stock equivalents

They will, as will civilian variants of the Yardie Lobo and Cartel Cruiser plus the regular Voodoo and Hermes. I'm assuming the Triad Fish Van's civilian equivalent is the Mule.

Gonna be posting a rough list of vehicles and edit it into my previous major post, starting with the no-brainers and short category lists and updating the list as it goes along.

Also gonna post the radio stations and media in the next major post to this thread

Nice concept, @Big Fat Paulie. I like it. Just try to stay as close to the original III feeling as possible, since that feeling is what makes the original III great, and putting that feeling into this concept will certainly make it equally great as well.:)

I definitely will. There will be some story changes since this is a reboot and I intend to include some new characters and bring back some old ones to help with the story expansion and the new area of Upstate Liberty, but I'll definitely stick to that dark, gritty, and often times eerie and insane vibe GTA III had.

I bet that, in addition to being able to watch TV shows and movies, Claude can watch plays in Bedford Point, like Fannie, Pirates in Men's Pants and Satuday Night Beaver.

That's actually a really good idea.

Don't forget the play "Rats" (a parody of Cats) that you see ads for in the subway stations

Did you consider bringing Liberty FM, Liberty Soul, WLLC, OR-Bit (possible beta station) and Radio Active (which advertisements can be seen in subway stations)?
