So, how far into the creation of a game do they usually do motion capturing?

About the same time as when the game usually goes into full production. So that was 2013 for RDR2 after GTA V released and since Rockstar is working on one main title at a time, we can make an educated guess that Full production began in 2018 (RDR2's release) with pre-production starting 2-3 years before that, Which is after they got GTA V's PC port out, So I think the small team which made GTA V's PC/"Next Gen" ports began working on GTA VI pre production from 2016.

Yes, we know from the Vulture article that key plot outline for RDR2 was already done in 2011, then mocap began in 2013. We know that it lasted 5 years from various panel talks that the actos were involved with, meaning that mocap ran right until the end of production. Probably because of rewrites that we now know about from the Kotaku article.

So if that's a basis for anything, you can expect that key plot outlines for GTA IV were done before Dan left. You can also expect that mocap began in 2018 for GTA VI. At the earliest given all that I would guess a 2023 release. And that's only if the workload is on par with RDR2 - it might be more and take longer.

That holds up actually, could be even earlier for the mocap tbh - not before 2017 tho

RDR2 mocap took 5 years as told by the actors, so it's doubtful GTA VI mocap started until at least late 2018.

If this is for GTA VI, Then the NPCs system is going to blow us away.

That part is already more or less in V

Yes, was going to say the AI thing is nothing really they haven't done in their last few releases.

That's not counting the delay because of pandemic btw, there could be a break for 6-8 months after March 2020 (when R* began to work from home).

I'm quite optimistic that mocap had started before 2018, at least in 2017 (RDR2 was nearly finished, so less works are required).

Well Tim Neff's CV suggests he's been involved in 2017 already, and to me that's one of the most believable leaks. Remember he denied being in RDR2, yet he is in the credits. RDR2 mocap also started before GTA V's release, it's not that unbelievable to suggest that the mocap has been going on at least from 2017 onwards.

It's entirely possible!

I don't know why they couldn't double down on some mocap actors especially. Doing lines and bits of dialogue for both RDR2 and GTA VI at the same time, especially if it's just NPC work. It seems like Tim Neff was probably one of these instances.

I'm gonna need @Black_Jesus on this one but are they going to use our devices as nodes and stream the game somehow?

This some type of machine learning? I could see Rockstar games having AIs just run around and explore GTA VI map for glitches, short cuts, etc. They could also use machine learning to blend animations and create new ones. Hopefully Rockstar will have AIs with their truly unique personalities and adapt to the players actions.

Example. Shooting at random pedestrians will increase the chances of them carry guns or weapons in the future.

Example 2. Stealing certain colors or model cars will create a lesser demand to spawn more of the type.

Example 3. Players or NPCs would be able to catch and spread colds around.

However GTA is designed so well that any machine learning will most likely be used for pathfinding errors during the debugging stage; optimization.

Graphics for sure will reap the benefits. The game will be so optimize due to the AI profiling what is causing a FPS drop and possibly fix it automatically. The hardware budget will be utilized to perfection.

That part no, but the actual patent itself will allow for much more intelligent behavior

Totally forgot that game was San Francisco. I guess that shows how memorable that map was. Same for Chicago in WD1 I guess. London in the new one is also a joke.

Feels kinda' like a Carry On esque parody of Eastenders, that isn't funny. Shame, I actually like Watch Dogs 1 & 2 a lot.

I'll have to do deeper analysis of how that node network system appears to work once I'm not on phone

Thanks for this.

From what I understand this is about Machine Learning:

[0048] Once the references have been established, two extra "dummy" nodes that initially include no data are added to the coarse graph 200, at 4060. The dummy nodes can be populated during the path finding with any associated links to the dummy nodes (in this case, four additional links are added) and other relevant data. These dummy nodes can be used for any path finding discussed herein. When a search is requested that starts or ends on a road that is `between` two coarse nodes, the closest node in the low-level graph is used and the generation process described above to `step` along the road until finding the coarse nodes on each edge of the road is performed. This generates routes to the exact position requested rather than the nearest coarse node that was generated off line and only the road network briefly around the start/end nodes are loaded when needed.

There is little in the patents to suggest that kind of use case, but sure they will do something like that, probably dont need a patent for it though

The navigation patent especially seems to be about optimization, at one point it said that the new way was "order of magnitude" faster

This is something I just found interesting. It's like every character in GTA V has a Kifflom audio file.

One of the ways I stay on top of deep machine learning is by following "2Mins Papers".

Here's an example of how AIs in GTA could take advantage of players hiding in a store such as the gun store(Ammunation).

GTA seems to be going MMO direction (emphasis on Massive)

This is already utilized by Red Dead Online, seamless merging. It's when the game suddenly throws you into a different lobby.

GTAV development ceased in August 2013 and the interesting part is that @Len Lfc provided a quote from Roger Clark, that he started mocapping in that same month. So, we can conclude that RDR2 development started right after GTAV's development was done and we can expect the same with GTA6, which would be like late 2017 when its development presumably started.

Lite implementation?

It seems that the possibilities are much more than what they've done so far

Completely agree. Although, I do think (And I have no real proof of this, but things I've heard from reliable people) A lot of development may have been scrapped and rebooted/changed in that time.

Yeah like i originally posted last year i am 100 percent sure they scrapped/restarted parts of the game after Dan departure. That would explain the conflicting reports of Jason Schrier and our own insiders.

Hope they didn't scrap the drug deal plot and the whole South America/Vice city dynamic.

Does anyone remeber the report where Rockstar was scouting Boston back in 2014? What was that even about?

I'm not sure it has so much to do with Dan leaving, but rather other higher ups having egos. Maybe the plan was set back in 2017. But one day in 2019, someone with a lot of power decides they want something else. Or they want to change something. There goes years of work, because one person got what they wanted.

Think of it like when they decided to have cinematic black bars on all the cutscenes, meaning the scenes they'd shot had to be redone. Causing a delay.

All I'll say is all those DJ's aren't in GTA Online updates because Rockstar as a company likes them. They're in because one person is friends with them.

Is this pure speculation or maybe not????

They could just use the rdr2 camp system for the ship crew. Add some minigames on the ship, ship customization, buying new ones, one big city and some smaller ones and it could be a great game. Another Red Dead would be boring.
