KGBeast 994
I've been wanting to make a thread on this for a while. I've noticed over the past few years as I've done numerous replays of the GTA series for various reasons (like my % breakdown threads) that there are a huge number of similarities between the stories of these two games. Check it out: Both Vic and Niko are former soldiers. They both have a brother who is incredibly important to the story. Vic and Lance, Niko and Roman (cousins that love each other like brothers in their case). Both 'brothers' tend to get them in trouble, and they do what they do in part to take care of a brother's problem. Vic takes care of their sick brother Pete, Niko has to cover Roman's debts. Both have to rescue said 'brother' after they're taken hostage. Vic in 'Leap and Bound' and Niko in 'Hostile Negotiation'. Romance plays a big part of both stories and both characters suffer the loss of their main romantic interest. Louise for Vic, Kate for Niko. Both are being hunted by former bosses. Vic by Martinez, Niko by Bulgarin. Both work for an emerging power (Vic for Diaz, Niko for Peg) to take on the existing power (the Mendez Brothers and the five families). Both go up against a pair of foreign criminal brothers. The Mendez Brothers and Faustin/Rascalov (again not literally brothers but blood brothers). Both are caught with cocaine by an undercover agent. Forbes and Michelle. Both end up the subject of film makers. Reni and Manny. I wonder if anyone else has ever noticed this or has some examples I'm not thinking of? I'm sure there are more, especially on the missions similarities. Obviously these two games were in development at the same time so it's not too surprising they share DNA, Dan tended to reuse ideas between multiple games, but they're pretty close even so.

KingAJ032304 823
Don't forget mechanics-wise, this is the only 3D era GTA you can shot in a car and when you get hit, you get stunned in place like GTA IV Edited November 24, 2020 by KingAJ032304

KGBeast 994
Great points AJ. You really can tell how these two games influenced each other on all levels. The excellent combat systems are another one.
KGBeast 994
I was doing a run of VCS last week and realized the first mission is exactly what happened to Niko on the Adriatic. Vic is on a boat that gets attacked and he has to swim for his life.

iiCriminnaaL 4,343
Both Vic and Niko were forced to work for rivals of them (the Mendez brothers/Faustin and Rascalov) for something they were blamed for (stealing the Mendez brothers' cocaine/killing Vlad), and both end up getting betrayed by them eventually. Furthermore, both were targeted to lose everything they own in the city and were demanded to leave town by their foes. Armando and Dimitri share the reasonable, calm business man vibe, as opposed to the more obvious mob affiliation looks regarding Diego and Mikhail.
