PC requirements

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I want to buy the PC edition of the game, but do not own a very powerful laptop. I looked at my specs and it is as follows:

Intel(R) Core (TM) i5-8250U CP @ 1.60 GHz

Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620

3.4 GHz CPU speed

8.0 RAM

Windows 10

408 GB free disk space

Unfortunately there is some inconsistency in the websites I found concerning the capability of my video card, so I wanted to be sure and ask this community.

Could anyone tell me whether I can run the game on my laptop, but also more importantly, whether it will be a smooth and enjoyable experience with these specs?

Thanks

I was afraid of that.

Would buying a better videocard solve the problem? In other words: do you think the game will run smooth if I only change the video card?

You're burning money by trying to do serious gaming on a laptop. There's nothing wrong with a laptop per se, but it makes no sense for serious gaming, because it is inferior to a desktop PC in every way except for one single benefit: portability. A benefit that is not even used--when it comes to gaming--by the overwhelming majority of people who buy "gaming laptops".

The GPU situation you propose is just one of many examples: You will spend much more on an external GPU than you would for an equivalent desktop GPU, and then after that you'll only get to use a fraction of the power you paid for. And you can't use the external GPU "on the go", so you've just eliminated the one single "benefit" to a "gaming laptop".

There are too many negatives to go into beside things like poor price/performance, higher cost over time, tiny screen size, and terrible keyboard, so I'll just address the misconception regarding the cost of a good desktop PC.

Most people (I used to be one of them) don't get the difference between price and cost. If you pay $120 USD for something that you use for one month, the price is $120 and the cost is $120 per month. But if you use it for 1 year, the price is $120 but the cost is $10 per month. At 3 years it's $3.33 per month.

And thus people who don't save money are forced to look only at the price of things, instead of asking themselves how much they can afford per month. I'm not talking about credit--you shouldn't buy things like electronics on credit. I mean that if a person doesn't save money, he's usually forced to buy something at a cheaper price, even if the cost is higher in the long run.

These days a desktop lasts at least 7 years. The only "big" components that have any real likelihood of being upgraded or replaced in that period of time are RAM, GPU, and PSU. Let's say you spend $1600 on a desktop which will be capable of maxing out any game at a minimum of 1920x1080 at a minimum of 60 fps.

My PC is almost 7 years old, and I don't plan on building a new one for at least 6 months. So if you use the PC for 7 years, and purchase one GPU upgrade at $550 (which should be all that is necessary unless you decide to go with higher resolutions) and one RAM upgrade at say $100, that's a total of $2250.

Which is a cost of $26.79 USD per month. Now, that doesn't include a display, but that would only increase the cost by ~$2 - 4 per month. You can keep a cheap laptop for any business or casual gaming you need to do away from home. The point is though, that anyone who is fortunate enough to live in a first-world country can afford a gaming desktop if he wants one, unless he can't afford it--which means he doesn't have any business buying laptops or indeed anything but basic necessities.

nah fam, fuq that - u should build a new pc to get to some serious gaming - i have a friend that bought a laptop, cause he "didnt have enough space in his room for a pc" now he is regretting it

OR u can buy a used xbox one s - they are f*ckin dirt cheap

Very helpful comment, thanks a lot.

I was afraid of these answers though, but it makes total sense. I am not enough of a gamer to invest in a PC, but indeed those X-boxes are surprisingly affordable!

Do you own a console? You said you wanted the PC edition so I assume yes?

I have an I7 8450, gtx 1060, 8g ram, 17.5 inch screen, 1080p laptop etc etc, it's a relatively good gaming lapyop and it plays RDR2 ok-ish, after twiddling the settings for hrs. Textures are still naff on certain objects such as rocks, trees and horses, but runs between 30-45 FPS on a good day.

It is still completely pointless playing this game on my laptop though. My X1X on a 4k 40+ inch screens provides a far better gaming experience all round for this game(Fallout New Vegas with alot of mods runs like a dream on it though). If you're not enough of a gamer, in other words would not be playing other games, then a PC is pointless aswell. Just get a cheaper X1X on black Friday when the series x is out(or just get that if you have the cash), a decent tv(does not even have to be 4k although it would be better) and play it on that.

I'm building a PC at the moment, going to spend about 2 to 2.5k on it all in all. I don't need to spend that much but I am also future proofing it and that includes needing a new monitor aswell. You can be more savvy than I am and build for alot cheaper.
