Frame Limit Cap on GTA IV (PC)

Recommended Posts

Hello there,

So I recently purchased a new gaming laptop. Specifically, it is a ROG Zephyrus G14 14", with 16 GB memory, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1160 Ti with 512 SSD. I have GTA IV from Steam, but upon playing, I see how the framerate is ridiculously high, and causes glitches like the phone background moving too quickly, as with police car symbols on the map. I am also aware how higher FPS causes other glitches such as making some missions impossible to complete. I wanted to ask if there was a specific commandline to LOCK the FPS to only 30, or some other way to lock the framerate on this specific game without the settings applying to other games on my computer (since older GTA games have a frame limiter anyway, and GTA V/RDR2 being fine with higher FPS since they are newer)?

You can lock fps through your graphics card driver panel

Personally, I would recommend just turn on vsync with 60 ghz refresh rate instead of capping fps, works very good in IV, and eliminating stuttering and high framerate bugs like cutscene zoom

I did try out the FPS lock in the NVIDIA control panel, locking it to 30 and the game appeared to run at the pace it was meant to be played in. Might be something I will have to stick with, but I will keep an open mind about other ways to optimize the game, since I do not want to force the 30 FPS lock for other games on my system (as the 3D Universe games already have a frame limiter in-game, and GTA V/RDR2 run well always over 30 FPS so I do not want to place a cap on those two). I keep Vsync on for all my games, and  in GTA IV I put the refresh rate to 60 (prior to discovering the FPS lock in the NVIDIA control panel), yet the game doesn't slow down anyway.

with msi afterburner and rivatuner you can set a fps lock for a selected program.

so you can select the gta4.exe and set the limit there, and the limit will not happen to V or RDR2.
just IV

Old post but I'll just send this for future reference:

I'd just lock it to 60, but not any higher since that'll cause the bugs u talked about, also, there's a command, just make a commandline.txt file and the command should be -frameLimit 60 (make sure the res setting in-game is set to 60 hz , i've heard it causes issues if u don't..i'm not sure, never had monitor over 60 hz)

hi guys l have a problem with gta IV. l have good pc Ryzen 3 3200g with radeon rx 560 serious graphic and that is good spec for gta iv and for some reason is laging can someone help me to fix it?

Try turning on steam overlay if you are on steam version + latest patch.  Without this the game starts to stutter after 1-2 mins of playing.  Does not happen for me on older patches.

That command i think that is a refresh rate setting, not a frame rate limiter...

Also with more than 50 fps the last mission will be impossible to do

If you install Fusion Fix then some frame rate bugs are fixed, including the last mission.
