If GTA 6 Will Be Moderately Sized, What Do You Expect From It?

Recommended Posts

GTAhare

With reports that GTA 6 may be moderately sized, if it does end up as such what do you expect it to have? For Rockstar I think “moderately sized” would still be fairly large but definitely smaller in scope than Red Dead Redemption 2. I just wish Jason Schrier would’ve specified what the game could be moderately sized in comparison to. If anyone has any specifications on it, please comment on it.

I think a moderately sized GTA 6, presumably for next gen consoles, would include:

-A storyline perhaps around as long as GTA 5

-1 city or maybe 2 cities. If there’s one city it’ll probably be Rockstar’s biggest, probably a Liberty City 2.0 with numerous small details and interiors to make up for there only being one. But the map would overall be only a little bigger than GTA 5 if not smaller with one city. With 2 cities I suspect the main one to be around the size of Los Santos, and the second to be somewhat smaller and less detailed.

-A map from around GTA 5’s size to 1.5 times bigger, it just depends on how condensed Rockstar would like the countryside to be.

-Maybe one playable character, or two or three, I think even with a moderately sized release Rockstar could still return the trio mechanic

-Not too many exotic vehicles in story mode or Online, though of course Online down the road will get a variety of vehicles added to it

-Perhaps there may not be things like military tanks or jets or a diverse countryside. I can see Rockstar putting the city first after the backlash GTA 5 got from seeming to use a lot of resources that could’ve been used to make the city more detailed for a countryside players don’t even often visit

I think moderately sized release refers almost exclusively to the size of the story mode, namely story missions with mocap. I definitely wouldn't worry about the game having fewer vehicles, those are definitely much easier to implement than story missions that require a lot of writing, mocap etc.... which was likely a huge time sink for Rockstar as they were notorious for rewriting their stories over and over. I wouldn't worry about smaller map either, I think the map will be much bigger than V's, with lot more interiors to explore. Map is one of the first things they do and I think it's safe to assume it was mostly done by the time this "culture change" in Rockstar took place.

If they want to get a quicker release shorter story seems like the best possible way to do it. They can still put a lot of other things in singleplayer to increase the playing time, such as something akin to Empire building system in VCS and make it optional. They can do pretty much anything to increase the amount of content while staying away from things that take up a lot of time (such as mocap). It's ridiculous to assume they would make every aspect of their game less detailed, or smaller just because they want a moderately sized game.

A very strong weather that will keep the protagonist stuck in a 3 generation loop.

🎱A Vice City length story but with way more side missions/activities.

🎱More missions in the style of MGSV with simple objectives and less scripted action but a ton of options to execute them and be creative.

🎱Every 2 or 3 years they add a new city with a 30-40 mission length story. Sort of like a hybrid of the ps2 era trilogy and episodes of liberty city.

🎱In 10 years time we have the ultimate GTA game with multiple cities each with their own stories.

-map between the size of GTA 5 map to 3 times larger at most (probably 1.5 to 2 times the size of GTA 5 map)

-going back to 1 protagonist,maybe 2

-between 70 and 100 missions

-2 to 5 weapons in each category, with more being added in DLCs

-maybe half as many vehicles as GTA Online currently has, with more added in DLCs (most of those at the start would be regular cars, motorcycles, trucks, boats and aircraft, with military/armed stuff added later)

-many gameplay features returning from GTA 5 and Online, and maybe some from RDR 2 (character customization, vehicle customization, gun customization, personal vehicles, possibly car trunk space mechanics similar to horse saddlebags and stowing in RDR 2, hopefully the ability to buy properties, etc.)

Oh and for the love of gosh PLEASE have ACTUAL random events with a whole bunch of dialogue, crime, and action. Stuff such as seeing someone pointing someone at gun point in a alley, people staking out houses before robbing them, people running and hiding from cops in cars, etc.

Less useless side missions like the looking for nuclear waste, the letters, etc.

A useless underwater ocean.

Bigger than any GTA, but smaller than RDR 2. Yet, with even more detailed and content-packed world.

I think Jason's comments about a smaller game really just defines the length of the story and how long it takes to complete. They still have to create a world that meets their expectations of a decade-long online playground, so from where I'm sitting their ambitions of map scope won't change.

I really hope they don't get rid of the tanks again. I mean, I get smaller map meaning no need for planes, but tanks aren't for transportation, they're for blowing stuff up because blowing stuff up is fun. Yeah yeah yeah not realistic blah blah blah, but it's f*cking fun and I will stand by that.

Well I mean every state has the National guard.  Some of their places are close to major cities and they store tanks there.

I don't think it'll be that small. Can't imagine it going well for R* if a sequels turns out to be smaller in every aspect than the previous game. If they do decide moderately size anything, I think it'll be the map. I think they'll take the GTA 4 route and forgo the country side for more city.

To be honest, even if the new setting is nowhere near a base, screw plausibility. The thing about a tank rampage is that it's pure lizard brain pleasure, like watching a movie packed with car chases, explosions, and attractive women. Fine, it's gauche, fine, it's tacky, fine, it's the thing for "dumb 12 year olds" to do, but that doesn't change the fact that there's something satisfying and fun on a very base level about stealing a tank and going on a rampage in it in a video game.

I know that GTA IV went for the maturity crowd and that for some reason tank rampaging is seen as immature and whatnot, but leaving a fun thing like that out of a GTA game just makes it worse, not better. Tank rampaging is not the most mature or intellectual of activities, I get that. But what it is is fun and cathartic, something the whole GTA series started out as. GTA is a comedic game with dramatic elements, always has been. Don't believe me? Throw on GTA IV and listen to WKTT radio for an hour and tell me what aspect of it isn't totally wacky. Take a look at all the brand names around you. E-cola, sprunk, cherry popper ice cream, CNT, Weazel News, and so on. The dramatic elements enhance the wacky world they're in by drawing the player into a story and thus making any wacky and fun stuff you do outside the story more immersive because you've already been drawn into the world by the dramatic elements.

Tank rampaging is just a part of GTA's DNA, right down to the first GTA game and the first 3d GTA game. Getting rid of it again would just make the game less fun, while keeping it in wouldn't mess up any dramatic storylines whatsoever. And with the Saints Row series practically dead in the water, Watch Dogs Legion aiming to make it so that random mayhem is undesirable due to all the citizens you can recruit, and cyberpunk aiming for more of an immersive RPG vibe, where the hell else can I go for wacky mayhem? I guess I can hope for Just Cause 5 to be a thing.

Tanks were brought back in TBOGT and GTA V so what's the problem? With the way things are going with the cancerous thing called GTAO, GTA VI will probably have flying tanks that shoot magical rockets or some other kind of bullsh*t.

Stupid, immaturity seems to be here for the long haul. You'll be right.

RDR2 isn't more than 1.334x the size of GTA V though.

It’s a pretty good debate which was more ambitious: GTA San Andreas or Red Dead Redemption 2. Of course GTA 5 is technically “bigger” than San Andreas but is less ambitious with only one city. I think GTA 6 could be more ambitious than GTA 5 but less ambitious then RDR2 and San Andreas if it’ll be “moderately sized”
