I think the worst I've had happen in a system would either be the gpu fan accidentally coming unplugged and f*cking the PCI socket, a cheap PSU melting the 4pin socket or me being full time retard and connecting a molex fan while the system was running which killed a band new drive. I've seen vids of PSU's go bang and whatnot but I ain't ever seen a PCI socket break like that. Strange since I've always had good experiences with MSI boards.

Anyway this should be fun, gonna try and port all my IRC scripts to Linux so I'm running a debian VM.

Jesus Christ, that's a sh*tty situation sivis. I've always been extremely careful when it comes to removing my GPU, cause I don't want sh*t like that to happen, even though my GPU is horrible lol.

Well, looks like MSI are happy to accept the RMA, though it's the usual sh*tty case of "courier it to the Netherlands at your expense". Bought the replacement today so I can rebuild tomorrow.

Is there any advantage to using SSDs for gaming other than slightly better loading times? I want to buy two more storage devices for my PC both for gaming and recording (mostly with Fraps) purposes. I would go the HDD route since they are far less expensive but maybe I'm missing something here.

If you don't need faster access to files then you'd be better off with an HDD. You get more storage for the price, as well.

There are some games that benefit greatly from being installed on an SSD - a prominent example would be e.g. World of Tanks. But for the most part, SSD just improves loading times.

Well, that's properly messed up. I have seen such damage several times, but it always happened in transit... not when trying just to remove the GPU

I'm looking into getting a new phone (NOT a phablet lol) and I really like the Nexus 5x....

You guys have any experience with one? iPhones are too damn expensive...

IMO the 5X is probably the best all-round, reasonably priced phone on the market. Powerful enough to handle anything you can throw at it, well-built, great customer support (the battery on my 5 was playing up and Google sent me a replacement within 24 hours) stock Android, two years of weekly Google security updates, Nexus Imprint...the only reason for buying something else is if there's a crazy deal of some kind on.

Is SanDisk the best company to buy flash drives from? I'm looking at a 64GB drive, no fancy USB 3.0 speeds or anything.. but is there something better I can snatch up?

So, I'm reinstalling Windows 10 from a USB after rebuilding and I'm stuck in something resembling a reboot loop. It goes through the five phases (copying files, getting files ready, installing features, installing updates and getting finished) goes to reboot and then just takes me back to the default "start the installation" menu. If I pull the USB and try and boot, it tells me to insert bootable disk.

Had exactly the same problem last time I tried to reinstall but have literally zero recollection how I fixed it.

-E

Fixed now. Think it's a foible of trying to install to an M.2 drive. Had to manually select "Windows boot manager" written to a secondary partition on the drive rather than the drive itself as the default in the UEFI BIOS boot settings.

lol Sivis when I was installing that Debian VM it took being stuck at a boot loop and a good 4/5 installs before realizing I hadn't selected the virtual disk to install GRUB to.

Only downfalls I see are the 2GB of RAM and the lack of an AMOLED screen. Both of which come cheaper on the oneolus x.

But I'd much rather be a part of the Google ecosystem.

OnePlus build quality is sh*te, though. I don't know a single person whose bought a OnePlus phone of any kind who hasn't had to send it back for repair within a year.

So, system is all back up an running now. Got most of my stuff reinstalled. Just suffering from two strange oddities at the moment:

1) No matter what I do, my system won't recognise my old 120GB M500 SSD which I was using a photo editing software/storage/RAW image processing/PhotoShop drive. No biggie, but it's pretty weird. Can't see it in the BIOS and I've tried three different SATA ports now.

2) Something is causing some pretty unpleasant vibrations. As far as I can tell it's not a fan as I've disconnected both of the front ones and stopped both of my H100i fans and still the sound is present. It goes away if I take off the side panel in my case or put pressure on it in certain ways. I have a sneaking suspicion my HDD might be the cause as I can't think of anything else in there which can actually cause vibrations, everything else is solid state.

Yeah I'm skeptical about Chinese manufacturers no matter what people say.

Plus I hate Glass backed phones and I want the barebones Marshmallow...

What kind of phone do you use?

My brother had a OnePlus, was really nice and all until it got one tiny crack after it was dropped. Made the whole screen useless.. even the capacitive nav buttons. Contacted OnePlus and they wanted over $120 just to fix it. I can assume that if you get a OnePlus device, you might just get f*cked over by the tiniest damage, due to build quality, aesthetics, etc. Not worth it at all. Go for the Nexus 5X. You get tons of support from Google themselves, no bloat ware, and it's powerful enough to do what any $700 Samsung can do.

Definitely not getting a 1+

The X doesn't support LTE either so you do get what you pay for.

Can't wait to get away from iOS and tinker around with CPU governors and kernels and rooting and stuff :D

I didn't go with the sh*tty plastic one now that I saw that pic.. good grief..

I went with the SanDisk Ultra Fit 32GB. It's even USB 3.0 compatible, but I wont make much use of it considering I don't have 3.0 ports.

I've got a Nexus 6P. It's very, very big, but also pretty much the best phone I've ever used.

I've found that pretty much everybody that owns a Nexus loves their Nexus.

And yeah one of my friends has one and I've held it.... It is pretty huge.

So I'm using my laptop with my new battery and all, I've been using it for a good hour or so.. Windows reports it at 100% still. I'm trying to calibrate it properly but I'm pretty much stuck. I'm gonna try a reboot, I'll edit this post if anything changes.

Nexus 5x is really tempting me now. I went to Carphone to have a quick go at it and it feels fantastic and is buttery smooth. Very f*cking smooth. I'm waiting for a while until it drops down in price eventually and until my S3 is unbearable to use which it isn't so far. However, what's the battery like? Aren't the nexus phones notorious for sh*t battery life? And I heard something about USB Type C which only allows you to use one cable to charge the phone.

So my buddy is bringing a bunch of computers he inherited from his mother to me and asking me to look through them for pictures. The problem is two of them are from the late 90s at best, maybe even sooner. There's this laptop that I'm not even sure would have more than 16bit color and a tower that looks like it migh have SCSI drives. I already had a hard time finding an OS that would run on a 2001 HP Presario... Well other than Windows ME which was on it.

So yeah I don't think I'm going to find crap on those. There is a 2005ish Dell I'm sure has something on it though.

Anyone else gone platterless recently? I've just picked up a 500GB 850 Evo to accompany my SM951 with the intent of completely removing all HDDs from my system. I'll probably pull the HDD cages out completely and run nothing up front, though in future I might be looking to drop a 240mm rad in there.

Got some pics of my rebuilt system but my M500 isn't playing ball at the moment so until I can get that to be recognised by my BIOS I've got no access to PhotoShop or Lightzone. Suffice to say, though, it now looks pretty f*cking cool.
