24 port switch and 20m ethernet cable ordered, hopefully it doesn't get lost in the royal mail clusterf*ck of new years postage (or lack of).

Why the AHCI Samsung 951 over the NVME Samsung 950 Pro?

Mostly due to reported compatibility issues with my motherboard (X99A SLI Plus), even with the latest BIOS.

I originally bought a 950 Pro, but returned it after reading about them. The performance isn't really dissimilar outside of benchmarks and thanks to Scan having offers on when I swapped it in, I paid £60 less for a 256GB SM951 than I would have for an equivalent 950 Pro (the SM951 cost me pretty much bang on £100).

Yeah I'm upstairs so the connection is pretty sh*tty. We were just gonna extend the ADSL line and have the router up here but then my mums WiFi would be f*cked so this is the best way. 24 port was just an impulse buy to double as a monitor stand plus it's the same price used as a brand new netgear 4 port so I thought f*ck it why not and even if it doesn't work a tenner isn't a loss.

eBay says the cables may come tomorrow which if it does that's a f*cking miracle.

I thought the laptop i7s were all quads? Not quite sure why though.

I did too but got corrected a while ago. Only the ones with a Q in the model name are actual quad cores.

so the first few parts of the little home network i'm setting up arrived; switch and a few ethernet cables (20m, 3m and 1m)

IYl86Qc.jpg

The ethernet's gonna be run up into the loft, out the front of the house and to the router downstairs. Could have saved time and just extended the ADSL line but then my mums WiFi downstairs would suck and I'd have no room to expand ports later whereas with a f*cking 24 port switch I have plenty of room lol. Pic above was testing it runs since I bought it used. The switch itself is a Edimax ES-3124RL which retails at $80 and I grabbed it for £10 off ebay (cba to do currency conversion lol). Was kinda sceptical that's designed for "an enterprise, governmental agency, or school environment" would even be working since it was so cheap but lo and behold:

JzPG2AB.jpg

Switch running fine on PC/PS4 (I also plan to connect Android box and IRC bot rig later on; yes 24 ports was overkill but this was the same price as a new Netgear 5 port plus I wanted a monitor stand so f*ck it). I kinda f*cked up though I should have just took it downstairs and tested with a laptop and short cable instead of running a 60ft cable downstairs and now having it on my floor trying not to knot it up but whatever.

Next up is to get an IRC bot machine up and running and then invest in a decent router. This Sky default one is alright but I just want something better and easier to configure (preferably with a nice simple gateway interface instead of Sky's bullsh*t).

This is insane. Can't even imagine spending $30,000 on a build.

Holy Sh*t! You're a Moderator again?

Good Stuff. :^:

Also, I could not imagine someone spending 30k on a Computer. GTA IV would run like garbage on it though. ;):p

Thinkcentre came today after a f*ckup from UKMail resulting in delays lol.

General shot, decent condition but a few scratches and f*ck me is this f*cker heavy. Opens on a hinge and I swear if it dropped while your hand was there you'd lose some fingers.

vji4aHn.jpg

Some PCI to RS232 card which I won't be using so I took that out.

8ztfRNA.jpg

Opened up; kinda like the way it opens.

ipOWWaX.jpg

The drive it came with; 40GB WD manufactured in 2004 which are reliable as f*ck actually but sadly I ain't got no time for IDE.

7uuw0xa.jpg

A bad shot of the only cooling for the system which would explain why the board runs at 57c. 40mm fan maybe?

ZNO8huQ.jpg

This was rattling around on the inside.

xuAhXUI.jpg

It seems to fit over the CPU heatsink but f*ck that.

ZjnUSGS.jpg

I even did a video quickly over it to give a better view; apologies for the bad quality.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bv3F3vCGk48&feature=youtu.be

Plans for this is to stick a SATA drive in, try and find some DDR ram and maybe a low profile card with no fan.

Right, so I recieved my new replacement battery for my S3 today. Of course it was at 42% when I put it in so I used it until 3 hours ago. I put it on charge 3 hours ago and it's still charged uptil 90%. Wtf? I hope it's not the f*cking phone.

um its not supposed to take 3 hours and since it fully charged 10 mins ago, its already dropped to 92% and I didnt even use it till now. And this is happening on a fresh new battery as well. I'm getting uber pissed.

Anyone here f*ck around with AWS? I've just moved into an apartment and need to spin a few VMs up for a lab, don't want to go overkill and build a whitebox as I'll probably be using it for a few hours during the week. Just curious as to how you've found the price/service/any gotcha's involved (a few people have told me that they'll charge you for power even if you've got the VM switched off).

EDIT: should mention that I'm also looking at Ravello Systems as well.

This guy gets above 60 FPS with a slightly overclocked 980 Ti and a 16 threaded CPU on Ultra in 1080p. With my specs, I get between 30-60 FPS. What the f*ck is wrong with this game? Do you really need an eight core CPU in order to run this properly. I swear to god I can't get a stable 60 FPS with settings on Medium. I already got a refund for the game but it's bugging me to no end.

Edit: OK. Here's a test with a 4790K (which is the CPU I want to upgrade to) and the horrible optimization is beginning to show.

As you can see, the frame rate is all over the place and both the GPU and CPU don't even reach 80% utilization. Piece of crap game.

Depends on how he's charging it tbh... If he's using a socket then everything is wrong with 90% in 3 hours.

Might want to look into your settings and see what you've got enabled. I'd look for location services first, it chews through your battery and I wouldn't be surprised if it was the culprit.

Ah! those are @Sloppywetblow and @DudeRandom84, the people whom I always follow. Btw, did you know that Sloppy played this very game on 4k with greater then 60fps on 980Ti

This might be running better with latest patch updates. I am having this game installed in my PC right now but their might be a bug which doesn't let me update the game through uplay.

The performance is total random it seems.

On old dx12 drivers It ran on 4õ fps on my gt 730 with medium settings.

So you can't trust on youtube videos.

You're goddamn right I'm using a socket. I've disabled everything from the beginning, believe me. I never ever use Location Services anyway, so that was the first to be disabled. I'm tired of this phone, I'm going to wait it out for a while until I get a job and then buy a new phone because this is one hell of a bad experience.

Try turning Airplane Mode on, while charging, maybe? I do that sometimes with my GS5, and it charges a bit faster.

It's already at the lowest.

@Android: I'll give that a try, but it's sad to know that charging the phone alone is the hassle im going through. What does this do anyway?

AWS can be great and save you money. Just make sure it's configured correctly.

There are tutorials and lots of info about it online, just have to search a bit.

We made some tweaks to our AWS server and cut costs by around 300% :)

Finally done some modifications to my laptop :) First and foremost I threw out the old mechanical hard drive in favor of an SSD which requried tearing almost the whole computer apart:

Then I decided to try the tips I've seen on Youtube for getting rid of glossy plastic which basically the whole thing is made of, I think it worked out quite well.
