Yeah... Skylake, by the looks of it the NDA lifted as well as the NDA on Asus' Z170 boards. To top it off, no has posted about it in here...

Not to mention Boardwell launched (quietly might I add)

EDIT:

The FIVR HAS been removed from the CPU, this means that motherboards now have a larger "say" in how the CPU will overclock (though the silicon lottery is the ultimate decider). This should also mean that there's a larger improvement when it comes to temps.

Pricing is going to be the classic $350 for the i7. UK pricing should be around £250 (don't quote me on that, though I haven't got through all the videos). European pricing (excluding the UK), I'd expect to see about €370 (again, don't quote me on that).

The new i5-6600K costs 40% more than I paid for my 4690K, not to mention that DDR4 RAM and Z170 motherboards are also a bit more expensive than their Z97 counterparts. Then I saw these benchmarks and lol'd.

I kinda just assumed Id build a new skylake machine. Knew enough of the features the chipset offered and figured Id get more excited about the CPU itself once it had launched.

Now its here and Ive gone thru enough reviews and honestly... meh :/

Gains are slightly less than I thought and it costs slightly more ^_^ If I upgrade now, it'll be partly thanks to boredom, partly because I feel sorry for some SSDs being on SATA II, and I guess W10, it'll latch onto the chipset Im sure so if I upgrade now I'll have to purchase a new OS next year when I know I'll cave to my upgrading itch.

I really, really hope AMD's Zen does something for them, Intel have never looked more complacent.

Anandtech's review on Skylake made it as if it were the ultimate Sandy Bridge successor.... nah. Can't even beat a 2600K at 4.8 GHz. Man Sandy Bridge was great.

Sandy was an OCing dream. I dont think I let a single sandy machine out the door without an OC and it came so easy. I cant believe I skipped it >.<

Ivy is a touchy whore, I ran it @4.7 for maybe a week, but the temps >_<; I didnt want to delid, so I eventually settled on 4.4, which it was happy to do comfortably on the right side of the 1.3v hump where it would get more spikey than I'd like for a 24/7 OC. Its run for 3 years and it never leaves the 60s regardless of stress/duration.

Ugh, if I get a Skylake, Id have to clock it higher. Broadwell-E is probably a better option (and by probably, I mean definitely), can I hold out....

I need to buy a new laptop for school. Does this one look like a good choice? I`m not too tech savvy.

http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00K6ZIGG4?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=ASQ63ZD40F63T

Features that appeal to me:

-Large storage (1TB)

-Numerical pad

-DVD Drive

-USB 3.0

-8GB RAM

Are there any better suited laptops in CANADA that have the features outlined above?

As long as you're not trying to do gaming I think you'll be just fine. Microsoft Office, Google Drive, etc would run wonderfully on it. My only real issue with that, is that it includes a 5400RPM drive. It's not such a huge deal, but 7200RPM drives are faster.

Old news but just a heads up, if you want something that is USB 3.1 10Gb/s then make sure it says USB 3.1 Gen 2. USB-IF is allowing manufacturers to use USB 3.1 Gen 1 for USB 3.0 ports.

Again,

USB 3.0 = 5Gb/s = USB 3.1 Gen 1

USB 3.1 = 10Gb/s = USB 3.1 Gen 2

Isnt there some sort of block function ^^

They also use more power and generate more heat. 5400 is common for a laptop so I wouldnt be concerned about that.

Yup, needlessly confusing. As if they needed to add anything else to the mix to make adoption rates lower -_- Altho Im not going to spend much (if anything) extra to get the faster ports, I paid extra on lynnfield to get USB3.0 and honestly didnt have any device that used USB3.0 til I got Ivy. I think history will repeat itself, so Im not gonna sweat it ;)

Its a different story on displays tho, considering they tend to last a bit longer (I will be in the market for new monitors.... any day... Im not getting stuck with DP1.2a for the next decade)! I would pay careful attention to ports on that front. There is no physical mention of HDMI2.0 on my TV for eg and considering how much it cost, I got them to test the model they had in store and get something written from Sony to show it could do [email protected] via HDMI.

It wouldn't affect battery much all that much. Probably less than 5% of battery life lost. What's more concerning is the heat, although that has pretty much diminished throughout the years.

My brother found a computer with a first-gen i7

Sounds a bit older than it is.

Speaking of old things, here a few things I've found recently...

60GB HGST Travelstar IDE HDD from 2006 (decided it wasn't worth buying an adapter/enclosure just for an extra 60GB so it's in bits now)

TwinMOS 256MB DDR SO-DIMM 333MHz CL2.5. Model No. M2S5I0804

Crucial 1GB DDR 333MHz CL2.5.

Samsung 256MB DDR 333MHz CL2.5

x2 512MB Hynix DDR2 533MHz CL4

x2 1GB Crucial DDR2 667MHz

I also decided to rip the HDD out of my 360 and funnily enough my other momentus (which I ripped out of a laptop) has died off. I knew the damn thing was on it's last legs. Unfortunately I'm now 750GB down :/

Yeah man a first gen i7 is still solid, if I throw a newer graphics card in there like an r9 280 and overclock the processor it will be a well-balanced gaming rig. So I'm gonna run down to Frys tomorrow and pick some up some RAM for 20 bucks or so - I plugged the machine in earlier and as it is everything seems to power on normally, so my hopes are high.

It's crazy what people throw away...

So I got a bit bored and decided to tear down some stuff for parts (only taken RAM, HDDs and a GPU)... Thought I might as well post the finds here.

HDDs:

250GB Seagate Momentus ~2009 (no date on the drive, only year of purchase and posts about the drive to go on)

x2 500GB WD Scorpio Blue, 2010 and 2011

60GB HGST Travelstar IDE (now dismantled) 2006

250GB WD Scorpio 2008... This one... Acer had me fooled, I though it was some strange revision of SATA I had never seen before, turns out it was some SATA slot-in adapter for their laptops

RAM:

256MB TwinMOS DDR 333MHz CL2.5 SO-DIMM

x2 2GB Micron DDR3 PC-8500s (CBA to find out the speed in MHz) CL7 SO-DIMM

2GB Elpida DDR2 PC2-5300S, CL5... I think SO-DIMM

1GB Samsung DDR2 PC2-5300S CL5 (again, I think) SO-DIMM

x2 1GB Crucial DDR2 PC2 5300U CL5

x2 Hynix 512MB DDR2 PC2 4200U CL4

1GB Crucial DDR 333MHz CL2.5

256MB Samsung DDR 333MHz CL2.5

GPU:

A rather unexpected Nvidia 9300M

Why are we even bringing up mechanical drives? We're pretty much somewhere around "11:00 am" in the day of solid state drives.

Insanely faster and far more reliable.

And reasonably cheap now.

I love how my old pig lights up Win7U x64... Zero to Desktop in under 10 seconds. Yummy :D

SSDs are reasonably cheap but HDDs are still significantly cheaper. Trust me, SSDs have still got a good few years to go before they can be considered a replacement for mass storage.

This exactly. That's what irritates me when a tech youtuber suggests an SSD for a budget build (looking at you, Linus, Intel 730 for a budget?).

I don't really blame the previous owner for poor cable management, it's one of those old cases with very little CM options. Also yes, it was very dusty, but I just replaced it with an aftermarket heatsink so it's all good now. The whole system could use a good cleaning though.

It's not horribly bad when they do it, there are cases where you can fit an SSD in a budget build when there's a large price gap between GPUs. It annoys me when they sacrifice parts for the sake of an SSD as a boot drive though.

I mean, SSDs work as a boot drive because you don't need to spend a lot since boot drives only need to be small. It's when you come to mass storage, SSDs that are 1TB in size just don't make sense to me, your normal SATA SSD will be about 2.5-3.5x faster than a HDD but cost at least x5 more.

Not everybody wants an SSD, either. I, along with many other people, get along just fine with a mechanical drive. It may be faster, but you can't get a 1TB SSD for the same price as a regular drive..

Tell me you want a HDD as your main drive after you've used an SSD.

99.9% sure you will go with the SSD.

I have a 500GB SSD and 1TB HDD in my laptop and it works great. I usually keep most files on my SSD, then when I want to create some space, I move it over to my HDD.

It's really the best of both worlds.

I'm sure I'd probably choose the SSD as well, depending on how well it preforms. I don't wanna buy an SSD for my old junker PC. Maybe in the future, when I build a new rig from the ground up, I'll consider choosing a nice SSD to throw in.
