Just finished my first attempt at phone fixing. :) It was to fix my Nexus 4 which wasn't charging, so I took the charging port out and replaced it with my brother's charging port (his screen is broken and the touchscreen is unresponsive, so it was pretty much FUBAR anyway...) It took about 3 hours to disassemble both phones enough to get the port out, and I had to use a steak knife to unscrew most of the bolts because I didn't have a small enough regular screwdriver, but it was surprisingly a success as the phones didn't blow up or anything. My brother isn't very happy though :p

I've ruined a couple of screwdrivers and some of the actual screws inside my Nexus 4 when I tried to fix it because they were so tightly screwed in. Either that or they were just stuck after being unmoved for nearly 2 years.

New Intel CPUs

First up, the Intel Core i7 4790K, with a base fequency at 4GHz and Turbo up to 4.4GHz.

Next is the Core i5 4690K running at 3.5GHz, up to 3.9GHz in Turbo mode.

And the Intel Pentium 20th Anniversary Edition with a clock speed of 3.2GHz.

All 3 of these CPUs are unlocked. The Core i7 and i5 are the Haswell refresh (Devil's Canyon), no info on the Pentium, if it's also a Haswell refresh or just standard Haswell.

Haswell Refresh is exactly the same as Haswell, there were absolutely no changes made to the architecture. This is not the case with Devil's Canyon, as those were very slightly modified. Edited by yojo2

Haswell refresh code name is Devil's Canyon, it's still a 4th Gen CPU so yes no changes to its architecture, but it has changes to its thermal design.

Broadwell will have a different architecture and be called 5th Gen.

If the Penitum unlock is based is a Haswell refresh (Devil's Canyon), then it would have the same design as as mentioned in that pic

Devil's Canyon is a codename for i5-4690k and i7-4790k, not all of the Haswell Refresh CPUs. Haswell Refresh does not feature any of the changes that were made to the Devil's Canyon. HR still has the same TIM as Haswell, no extra caps for better stability, etc.

To my knowledge, G3258 is Haswell / Haswell Refresh, not Devil's Canyon.

So I guess there is absolutely no reason to upgrade to i7-4790K?

I've got the i7-4770 because I needed the features it has and also for video editing.

The iGP can be handy when ever the discrete GPU will die :p

Not really, unless your i7-4770 sample is really bad when it comes to temperatures, and you'd want to overclock the CPU.

I know, and that's why upgrading it to i7-4790k might be worthwhile if for any reason you'd want an overclockable CPU :)

Now I got it, Haswell refresh is just a speed bump and nothing else, while Devil's Canyon is only applied to the Core i5 4690K and Core i7 4790K.

From what I can gather from the reviews, the changes made to Devil's Canyon did not improve its overclocking capabilities whatsoever. I'm truly disappointed with that, it makes the extra cost entirely pointless (especially seeing as the standard i7-4770k was not really cheap either) - I'd much rather delid i7-4770k and apply CLP/CLU. I know I'd risk voiding the warranty, but the CPUs rarely break anyway. Not to mention that the CLP/CLU transfers heat better than the new DC TIM.

Thumbs down to Intel :v:

Reviews of the anniversary Pentium G3258 started popping up on various sites. To be brutally honest, I find it a much more interesting release than Devil's Canyon. For a small extra fee (compared to G3420) you get a CPU with neat overclocking potential. On a Polish site (PCLab) they've pushed this CPU to 4,2GHz on stock cooling, and to 4,7GHz with Scythe Grand Kama Cross installed. Sounds excellent for the price, it's the final nail in the AMD's coffin. Possibly the best value for money as far as the CPUs go. Obviously not a valid choice for any high-perf rig, but for someone's on a tight budget this might be the CPU to buy.

Thumbs up to Intel :^:

Speaking of ASUS, they've recently started a cashback program where you can receive a cashback by buying certain ASUS motherboards and i5-4670k/i7-4770k - £30 and £35 respectively. Only Z97 motherboard qualify for the offer, but it's interesting nonetheless. It'll definitely make ASUS mobos a far more viable option.

For now, I have no idea. It will depent on how GTAV will perform on my CPU.

GPU should be no problem at all. (GTX780)

Good. Intel's business practises are f*cking atrocious.

At 1.4B, that is pocket change for Intel. As of March 2014, Intel had spend 2.846B on R&D

http://ycharts.com/companies/INTC/r_and_d_expense

$1.4Bn is more than 10% of Chipzilla's operating income for 2013. It may be pocket change for intel, but it certainly isn't for AMD. 14x their operating income for 2013. 20% of their entire 2013 revenue. 6x their current quarterly R&D budget.

Should keep the lights on for a while.

Given a fair proportion of FX-83xx processors will do 5GHz on air, I really don't know what else this is going to bring to the table. It's 28nm like Kaveri or bust in my view.

A 28nm die shrunk FX series sounds pretty appetising but that's pure speculation.

Wonderfull....Really wonderfull!

Screw AMD, one day they will be completely out of business in high-end. They can't keep it up with Intel. While Intel Haswell is on 22nm, this sh*t is still on 32nm.

Unbelievable. It is like you are kicking a half-dead horse that will die but not soon.

AMD are basically out of the high end. The 9590 competes with the 4770k on price and does fairly well against it on performance, but in all honesty the i7 Haswell isn't the "high end" but the top of the mid-enthusiast range. I'm a borderline AMD fanboy who will extol the virtues of the current FX83xx series until I'm blue in the face, given that next-gen consoles employ module-based octocore processors, and given that in the price vs. performance stakes the 8320 blows away basically everything else on the market, but high-end AMD stuff is not. I only bought an 8320 because it's much cheaper than an i7 avec decent SLI motherboard, I like overclocking stuff and the spare change will get me a second GTX680.

There is no really benefit to get the extreme top-end i7 aka i7 Extreme or 4930K.

The 4770 even outperforms the i7 Extreme in some games. But of course if someone only want to game, he is much better off to get the i5-4670 or the Haswell-R.

I already thought AMD is out of the high-end but copying the architectures and re-launching their flagships is just not something we're looking forward to.

I'm happy with my i7-4770. I use it also for video-editing, Photoshop and other software that can use the HT. And games runs very nicely on this CPU.

Although the GPU is a GTX780. While Intel is not doing very well with producing really new CPU's and of course, overpriced sh*t,

look at it the bright side. Intel gives us a reason not to upgrade the CPU every year. The only morons will be the ones who's upgrading just because

of a few % extra performance and the other morons are the brands buying their CPU's in their pre-build piece of crap PC's.

People just needs to realise not to upgrade over something that has barely any changed.

If I'm correct, the FX8320 was released in 2012? From your story I assume this CPU still rocks.

I heard this CPU is really good for overclocking but others said it runs hot. As long as you are happy with it.

Yeah, they're oldish but astonishing value for money. £105, which is 30% cheaper than the cheapest i5 available at the moment.

They're a fairly high TDP in comparison to Intel chips but I'm running an AIO water cooler so it doesn't matter hugely. For all intents and purposes the 8320 and 8350 binnings appear to be the same, and most will hit a stable 5GHz with a mild voltage bump and decent cooling, at which point they'll go toe-to-toe with the 4770k at standard clocks in most moderately or highly threaded applications.

Of course, once you start comparing with OC'd K series i7s they're basically toast, but given they're less than half the price you'd kind of expect that.

Are you sure? I always thought that Jaguar was in effect a modular design even though it lacked multi-thread clustering.
