get used to it, because it will happen from time to time, threats are nothing, now if you piss of the right person you may get swatted and thats when the real fun starts.

i have been playing online for 22 years, i have received many empty threats and i just laughed them off BUT a few years ago i got swatted 😂🤣 soo yeah, some how some salty gtao player managed to get my address and called the cops on me, i spotted the cops as they were approaching my house gate.

My question is, why the f*ck isn't there an option to disable random players from sending you in-game texts, rather than having to mute everyone in the lobby manually?

C ockstar, I swear...

This is a huge part of online/multiplayer games now that most players just ignores it, I'm still looking for my 275 brothers and sisters.

Yup. You're truly aren't a vet until you get a death threat.

Damn, I haven't got any death threats neither, only insults and at worst wrong racial slurs (I'm Mexican lol)

I got DDoS'd once though, after kicking some tryhard's butt with my Hunter.

To OP: Don't worry about it, players on this game talk hot sh*t but they never carry on their threats (thankfully), best course of action would be to block him and carry on.

I would like to add here that there may be legal action optional if you're in the UK through clauses in the Data Protection Act and Computer Misuse acts.  The Data protection Act is relevant if the player revealed your details (in this case your IP address can lead other real-life details if you're not using a Proxy to mask it - if he was able to obtain your real world phone number through common information then that is where the police could act on, pending an investigation).  Bear in mind that Rockstar Games HQ is also in the UK as well.

I get death threats and other abuse every time I log on.  It's an occupational hazard of being a high rank.

I just send them the heart emoticon across XBOX Live, or threaten to tell their mothers what they are up to.

All the extremists argue on social media, the left is just as guilty of the right when it comes to death threats and other nonsense.

So I've been told, although I've not seen it personally, certainly not in my circle of friends. I think anyone that resorts to that sh*te loses all credibility, no matter how good an argument they make. It's the schoolyard equivalent to "my dick's bigger than your dick".

I always won those battles by whipping it out. No shame here.

OP, just report the profile and block them. I've gotten a few and given addresses of police precincts if I'm feeling saucy.

An IP isn't private data, and neither is the whois information attached to an IP, theres a reason why most ISP's put random garbage pointing to their own offices in the whois info.

sh*tposting aside that's pretty f*cking scary man. I had my ip posted once after I griefed someone's full MC sale. Very scary stuff. I always play with a vpn now so I can't get swatted or something. I recommend you get a vpn so that doesn't happen again

I never said that the IP is private data, but it is sensitive data in that you can use it to track down the ISP - and knowing a gamertag as well as the ISP of a person gives you 2 bits of information which can be used to find out more - and in the UK the "Snoopers charter" requires all ISPs to store all internet activity of their customers for a minimum of 12 months and make it available to a wide variety of government agencies (which can range from the intelligence services, through the emergency services and tax office, right down to local councils) upon request.  If those ISPs in the UK get hacked, then a person can cross-reference the gamertag and find out the accounting information for a person.  Hell, if the ISPs don't confirm the validity of every "government request" for that information then someone simply using social engineering on a phone or spoofing an email address could gain access to it.

I think it's very easy to get player IP even use something like Network Monitor. If you paid your provider to have  static IP and registered your own DNS domain for this IP -  your contact information probably could be found using Whois. And it's public because you made it so.

If you're a regular Internet user and know nothing about IPs and stuff your IP address is dynamic and changes from time to time. All hackers can see is your Internet provider name. Internet providers probably have their own logs and if they know time and IP address they can find out who was using IP address at the time. And you Internet Provider normally has you home address.  In other words to find out a home address of a regular user the attacker should either hack Internet provider, or work for them and have access or have a court order or a police request (probably depends of jurisdiction). Another way of finding who you are is your game profile. Some people allow everyone to see linked accounts and sometimes linked accounts have your information like e-mail or links to you facebook pages or other stuff which can be used to google more information about you.

At least that are  easy ways to get to you I can think of.

Crazy. I have killed a lot of players over the years and have never been bothered for it.

Instead, I get harassed by the people killing ME. Once an off radar guy killed me and since I didn't want to be bothered I went passive. You'd think I called his wife a bitch with the angry tirade he went on with. Told him I wasn't interested in giving an OR pussy free kills.

What's the big deal about someone knowing your IP address anyway? It resets to a different one every time you reset your router anyway & it is hardly personally identifying (at least not in the UK) unless someone gets a court order to bypass data protection and force your ISP to disclose your personal information which no pathetic little GTA scrub is going to get.

Your IP itself isn't private information, but it can be used to locate your ISP - and knowing your ISP and at least one of your online identities gives them enough information to locate more private information - particularly in regards to the UK's "Investigatory Powers Act 2016" which - as I mentioned above, requires ISPs to record all your internet history for a minimum of a year and make it available to a wide variety of Government agencies upon request - and that information can be obtained by hacking or social engineering.

Yea but when you have a twatty 12 year old kid trying to be clever by quoting your IP address back to you because you killed his character on GTA online there's hardly any cause for concern.

If you have saved their nickname, you can try finding their account on your platform. No idea how to do that on consoles, but it's fairly easy on Social Club. I don't think Rockstar would take your report to care though.

The phone message is a strange thing. There's multiple cases of phone phishing in my country, so it could be same for you, just try to ignore those. And if things will get not pretty, you can try your luck with reporting stuff to police. Some departments have units dedicated to internet stalking etc.

You can also use VPN to make you feel somewhat safer, but AFAIK those are illegal in some countries.
