What Grand Theft Auto Game best represents Grand Theft Auto?

For me I'll say it would be GTA VCS but toned up. Feels like GTA 1, VC, SA, IV, EFLC, CTWs, V and Online all rolled up into one. From the gameplay, to the story, to the characters, to the protagonist sort of sticking to stuff within his character, the number of side activities (No GTA from here on should have less stuff to do than GTA VCS), to the balance of trying to be serious and silly when needed, to the city, to the atmosphere, to the getting the basic things necessary to GTA, to the protagonist, to the rise, to the since of morality, to just everything. It truly felt like conceptionally it would be the perfect GTA. If GTA VCS had a better/more fleshed out story/characters, made Vic a bit more ruthless to people with a thicker accent but still caring when needed (with more doses of "Niko" added to him), less hypocritical overall and would see him develop and get more corrupt, been the first 3D perspective game to take place in Vice City, and the game was polished to meet the modern standard of Rockstar, I feel it would have been perfect!

Depends on what you think of as Grand Theft Auto's main idea or theme. The original GTA, its expansions and GTA 2 had a different approach and concept compared to later versions, and the "story" wasn't as much in the center of everything as it came to be in later games. It was essentially a game about getting money through crime and the dangers it comes with, not necessarily through a long campaign or a straight story. In that sense, no game gets more GTA than GTA Online. It's pretty much the original vision they had in mind when making the original games.

But as far as games with stories are concerned, it's San Andreas for me. It has the "fun" element to an extent, but still has a strong atmosphere, a huge map (I know V's is bigger, but in retrospect San Andreas was a milestone), a B-movie type story, etc etc... It was so complete, in a sense.

Well, there is no definitive answer, but for me it's III for finding and utilizing the right formula and San Andreas for perfecting this formula. The HD games have become more grounded and story-driven as technology progressed. Rockstar were no longer able to get away with overly silly stuff (gameplay-wise especially) that was so much a part of the 3D titles, but it's fine, I more than embrace it. The way they were able to balance this overt silliness with dramatic storytelling, however, is sublime to me. Along with amazing worldbuilding and open-world opportunities, this was the main element that made me an avid fan of the franchise.

I had a hard think about this, it hurt but...

if you say San Andreas represents the franchise, surely GTA IV should have been more SR1... no instead its vastly different so what is GTA?

I think the most GTA, GTA game is The Ballad Of Gay Tony. Its a hybrid between IV and V in tone and depth. Its interactive and dense. its pushes boundaries and sets the bar. That is Grand Theft Auto.

I think III, VC and SA are the best representatives of the franchise. III being the first in the 3D era and giving you impressive freedom while the others expanded on it and added new features with each one being just as important as the other.

in terms of satire? well, GTA IV has plenty of satire while also being actually funny, unlike GTA V

in terms of the criminal world? yeah, GTA IV is pretty competent in that aspect. it certainly helps that johnny is an actual member of a gang and that niko is directly responsible for dimitri's rise to power in the russian mob. the protagonists actions affect the criminal world around them.

in terms of causing chaos in free roam? GTA IV is the best, hands down. euphoria is the reason for this. GTA V lacking euphoria is one reason why the game has really soured on me.

In terms of, which is the closest to the meaning "Grand Theft Auto" i'd say:

in general: 2d universe games plus maybe gta3

to an extent: mostly gta3, san andreas, iv, online

Now gta3 had a mission called Grand Theft Auto, San Andreas and Online have Import/Export and other driving/stealing side missions, IV has Stevie's Car Thefts and i believe the other one is Brucie Exotics or sth

If you however meant which is the most typical GTA, it could be either of these: 3, SA, V, Online

GTA III

You were a hired gun that worked for various gangs across the city. Just like in GTA 1. Gangs would get pissed at you over what you did and you'd have a target on your back.

I'll argue GTA 2 actually

not bashing you or anything, it just sounds like you just chose your favorite from each era rather than what best represents each era

GTA2 and GTA4 are my favorite of those eras but not San Andreas. I like both GTA3 and Vice City better than San Andreas. but I still think that San Andreas does represent GTA the best in that era

I for the most part agree. Even though I easily prefer GTA 2 over GTA 1, I still think GTA 1 better represents GTA.

GTA III of the main games, honestly.

Vice City's story structure is too reliant on asset building missions to be representative of the whole series IMO. San Andreas, IV and V on the other hand are too divisive, fans of those games are always fighting with each other, lol.

I feel TBOGT was kinda purposefully made over-the-top to offset the grittier tones of GTA IV and TLAD. Not the best representative of the series IMO.

Gotcha. Do you think if it was a full fledged game it would be a good precursor for the next GTA set in Vice City.

I think a calmer vibe would suit Vice City better. TBOGT's non-stop action and eccentric characters would maybe be too exhausting for a full game. Just my perspective.

Would if it was spaced out? Like 80+ missions of GTA III/IV style missions with TBOGT style ott placed in between when needed?

Yeah, there could be more mission variety than in IV with occasional epic set-piece missions, but I also hope there would be more world-building type missions to flesh out characters and more open-ended missions than in V. Balance is everything.

The ironic thing is GTA IV’s the most like GTA III when it comes to atmosphere, tone, gameplay etc more than any other GTA game.

To me GTA IV felt like it went back to the “roots” of the the series whilst simultaneously freshening it up for the modern era.

A soft reboot if you ask me.
