How come R* games don't have the "Press Start" screen?

Recommended Posts

A while ago I was curious why do (console) games have the "Press Start" screen before getting into the menu.

A few reasons were given, e.g. it's a state of the program that's agnostic to the user or controller. But the bottom line is that it's among the basic requirements of the console manufacturers.

But that begs the question, how come most R* games don't have such a screen? In fact they usually just boot straight into the autosave, or if that fails, start a new game. Not even a menu.

So not only can that cause problems (just because it can't load an autosave doesn't mean I want to start a new game), but if the start screen is an essential console requirement, how do they get away with not having one? Or even any menu before a game starts?

And if that stuff isn't actually necessary, then it's strange that everyone else has them.

Source?

I personally prefer to get to the game as fast as possible. RDR2 has a main menu even on consoles so I don't see the need for a "press start" button in any R* game except when it was cool to do so (derived from the arcade insert coin).

I never heard this before either.  Which console manufacturers? Sony? XBox?

The only games I have that have (the annoying) "press start" requirement are developed by Ubisoft. I've never understood why they do that.

Many games have Load Game / New Game requirement. Many games just get on with it.

For example https://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/18780/why-do-console-games-require-a-button-press-before-showing-the-main-menu

But if you look up that question, people usually say the same thing, that it's a requirement from console makers.

The only consoles I have are ps3 and 3ds, and all the games except R* ones have not just a menu, but also this screen.

(And yea some ask you to press X/A, same thing.)

I've only heard about MS having this requirement for the original Xbox, but not the PS2. For instance, GTA SA PS2 did not have a Press Start sequence, but Xbox did.

This is no longer a requirement for anyone and there is zero reason for games to have this.

Because they aren’t a poorly ported arcade game

The one thing I dislike is that R* doesn't put a proper main menu in their games where you can change the settings before jumping into the game. Whenever I play a game for the first time, I always go through all the options, so the settings are to my liking when I start. GTA games don't even have a menu at all, they jump straight into the game. So I have to watch the first cutscene without subtitles before I can turn them on, which I hate.

Maybe skipping through the intros counts as press start?

RDR2 fixed this on consoles, maybe GTA VI will too.

I actually like it better this way. Takes you straight to the game. And the fact that instead of a sh*tty menu you get to see a well-crafted loading section adds to the pre-game excitement for me.

The problem I have is with GTA 4 on PS3. I have the game and EFLC installed; when I play some EFLC and then jump to 4, the game can't load the last autosave and starts a new game. Yea annoying as hell.

So it's actually a game that would benefit from some pre-game interaction the most.

Don't know about Xbox but SA on PS2 was serious as hell

SCE Logo --> PS2 Logo --> Intro Videos (I never skip those) --> SA Trademark Screen --> 2 to 3 minutes of Loading --> The Johnson's House

Yea I know it might look like it takes some time but in the PS2 it was straight to the gameplay

I don't think, that there is any need for menu on next-gen consoles, not with SSD on board. It will probably take only few seconds to load next GTA.
