The R* support team responded that they are already working "100% to solve the problem".

In other words, they are aware that this is not a random bug that only affects one person and that they have become serious about the VRAM problem.😃

I am also facing same problem. Before update game is smooth. After update game getting lag and unplayable within 1 or 2 minutes. I tried verify, reinstall, all low high and every possible settings. Nothing works.

Glad i'm not alone in this. Got the same vram problem. I only have 1024 of vram but in-game detect 3842 of vram which causes stutter in under 5 mins of gameplay and it's impossible to play the game. I don't experienced any stutter issues before the new game update.

Hey y'all,

So I've posted here a couple of days ago about the same VRAM/stuttering/crashing crap that's been happening since the update dropped; I contacted R* Support, they said they were aware of this, etc etc. As part of their usual follow-up they told me to update my drivers, check for any software that might have interfered with the smoothness of the game and basically re-install everything from .NET Framework to the game and even the OS. As this process would have taken an enormous amount of time I decided to do one thing I didn't do before - launch the game via the R* Launcher. And it worked... there still is the occasional stuttering, but the game hasn't crashed like it used to for a couple of days already. Before that I launched the game with Steam and I had all the joys of crashing, textures not loading properly and so on.

I notified R* Support about this inconsistency and perhaps those of you who have the same problems can try using a different medium to play the game.

I'm not nearly an expert when it comes to tech, but this worked for me. Perhaps they fudged something up with Steam specifically.

P.S. Oh, and the VRAM issue didn't disappear, I told them about this as well.

The executable's size changed significantly since the last update, so there were large code/component changes somewhere. I don't seem to be affected by this issue (8 GB video memory), but they definitely changed something - perhaps memory changes for the Winter Update that screwed something up.

I always used R* Launcher, never crashed but awful stutter. best thing to do is wait, don't waste your time reinstalling the game people. (We can easily explain why R* version run better than steam and Epic because they don't run in background and you don't need a launcher to launch another launcher.)

Noticed that few days ago, I was concerned about that.

I don't know if this is the right place but I don't think the GTA Online PS4 support ends before the release of the ps5. It means the "big" update is on ps4 too thus it needs to run with ps4 hardware.

PS3 support ended on December 9, 2016.
GTA 5 on PS4 came out November 18, 2014.

They make gta free for a limited time maybe inciting player to buy ps5 cause you know game is free...good strategy. also means they could end PS4 support sooner.

However they know they need time to make the transition. A new game console is expensive. Thats why i think we can run the big winter update with potatoes.

I have retail version of the game (RG Launcher), and I also tried Epic Store version. 3 different systems (Win 7/8.1/10), with older/newest drivers. The issue is there no matter what. At least for me.

What is your GPU btw?

I tried this with the EGL, it slowed down the stuttering a bit, but it crashed a lot more.

Well, my account is on Epic games but I've always started GTA through the Rockstar launcher never crashed or lagged before this summer update. So I guess you had a different issue

I just worded my post wrong. The game ran great before the update with barely, if any crashes. Now it crashes and gets stuck on cutscenes (Camera staying in an area when its not), stuttering, etc. which I believe the VRam issue to be the cause of. I have the same issue as you, don't get me wrong, it helps, but it doesn't stop the crashing and cutscene problems sadly. The stuttering gets a bit better, though.

I'm using 1gb dedicated memory on my pc. after summer dlc update. the game settings is showing 4gb of vram instead of 1gb, I previously checked it was showing 1gb vram before update and the game was running fine. after this update the game is unplayable and its also consuming much ram. the ram usage is 96% of my 8gb ram whenever I'm running the game. is there any way to force the game using dedicated gpu?

The best we can do is waiting. They're going to fix it.

This is what I've received this morning :

"We do understand that you have issues with VRAM usage. We certainly appreciate your passion for this game and we thank you for bringing this issue to us. We have received similar reports from other players as well and we would like to inform you that we are currently looking into it for a fix.

We would like to assure you that we strive to provide the best online gaming experience and we definitely make changes in the game from the valuable feedback that we receive from our players. Your understanding is highly appreciated. We'll make sure to get back to you as soon as this is sorted.

If you ever need assistance in the future, please feel free to contact us."

Since Rockstar knows and try to fix it if everyone agree we can stop posting about this issue and find other bugs.

When you spawn into singleplayer as Trevor with his head in the sink, there is a fountain of water in his face that goes on for several seconds after he steps back. Nice to see online updates can still break storymode. PS4 btw.

Ms. Baker missions are bugged. I did "When The Chips Are Down" at Plaice Place, and got the "leave the area" prompt as soon as I'd killed everyone. All the chips and equiment were still intact. Drove away and passed the mission.

At least that one passes. If you get the Fake News mission with the van at the airport, the NPC driver will repeatedly smash into the sign near the hotel where he's supposed to drop off the journalist, making it impossible to pass it.

IF you have VRAM/RAM issue with stutter/lag, read this post :

Rockstar Games working to fix issues.

  • TDLR : Game use shared memory and not gpu dedicated memory causing excessive ram usage and stutter.
  • The game also fail to load textures because GTA 5 consumes all available memory: VRAM, RAM, swap file. I don't have this problem but I noticed some people complain about this.

Background and my problem (You can skip this part) :

  Reveal hidden contents

Hi,

Sorry if my English is not perfect.

I ran the game between 45fps and 55fps at 1080p before the update, now it's more like 40fps when I don't move and 5fps when I move.

move = walking/driving fast.

My computer is 12 years old (I know), built it for GTA IV, and I bought GTA V in 2014 (day one, 7 disks oof). I have now, 754 hours without issue with my setup. My experience so far was nice. Not great, not terrible.

I have 4gb Ram and 1gb VRAM, game show more VRAM (1791mb) after the 11/08/2020 update. (08/11/2020 in USA)

Everything is up to date, I use Rockstar Game Launcher and the settings below

Game was fine with this settings.xml before the update.

My setup :

  Reveal hidden contents

  • Windows 7 64bits SP1 (Ultimate)
  • AMD Athlon II X3 445 CPU at 3.10GHz
  • 4 Go RAM (2x2Go, I don't remember but I think 1333MHz, Corsair)
  • ATI Radeon HD 5700 1gb VRAM (Sapphire)
  • 80Gb HDD for my OS
  • 1Tb HDD for everything else.

I use 1080p 60Hz. This computer is old af but trust me GTA V was fine BEFORE the update.

Here's what I found:

  • My GPU has 1gb VRAM DDR5
  • 1791mb is the amount of shared memory I have

First I thought my HDD died, but I rejected this possibility : my game load nicely, 1 min into Story Mode then 3-5 min into Online.

I thought my RAM died, I looked at my performance tab (task manager) and I saw 100% RAM and HDD Usage.
Double checked my game and I saw 1791mb VRAM, very weird.
Checked the GPU properties and 1791mb is my shared memory,

Problem identified.

screenshot-gpu.png

If people here with the same VRAM problem can confirm/verify  the game use their shared memory instead of their VRAM it would be nice.

To prove the theory that it's not hardware (in my case):

GTA IV shows the correct amount of VRAM (1024mb)

Capture4.png

What are the consequences ?

  • Shared memory use RAM (RAM is fast but not enough)
  • If your RAM is full, your computer is swapping to disk. (average HDD speed is between 80-160mb/s)

This combo = Stutter Fest, and maybe crash.

To resume, This issue is not hardware, the problem is rockstar fault, we have really different setup and our game worked well BEFORE the update. After the update we have the same symptom: lag and stutter, high RAM/HDD usage and misleading vram amount.

UPDATE :

I have now confirmation that NVIDIA is not immune.

Dont expect Rockstar to communicate about problems, I check SteamDB often, this build (build ID '5376572') was uploaded 7 days ago, and released to everyone the 11th of August 2020 at 11:00AM here in France. If they test something I'll let you know guys.

Source : Steam Database

UPDATE :

Rockstar Game Launcher was updated today (13/08/2020) I tested the game again, nothing change.

UPDATE :

Memory leaks confirmed.

My advice for everyone with this issue :

Check your GPU properties (or use the method below) and see if shared memory is the value GTA V shows.

Waiting the new update is the best we can do.

I don't know how to fix this, Its not my job. I just share the problem.

Rockstar support approach is trying to solve the problem before knowing what the problem is, tell them you found the problem (If yours is similar to mine).

As far as I know this affects Rockstar Game version (the cleanest possible version of the game) and Epic Game version. If someone use Steam, tell us. Found someone on Steam with this issue.

Sorry everyone this is very long but I tried to give as much information as I can.

EDIT : level_666 and I both use AMD GPU but we have people here with the same problem using NVIDIA drivers.

EDIT : I heard rumors about 64 players servers, maybe they try something with memory.

EDIT : Rockstar changed something inside game files, if it is not intentional we may have a fix soon, previous game version was fine.

Quick and easy guide to help you check your shared memory :

I used the method mentioned above but this one seems more accessible

This is not a fix. Just to visualise the problem, nothing more.

  1. Launch GTA 5
  2. Load Story Mode
  3. Go to settings then graphics, you should notice the memory available is not correct. Keep this number in mind.
  4. Close your game
  5. Launch dxdiag.exe
  6. When the process is finished, save it somewhere
  7. Open the file "DxDiag.txt"
  8. Press CTRL+F and search 'Shared Memory'
  9. If this number is the same, it confirm you have this issue.

I got that memory leak problem and i tested many solutions..found the one that worked for me.

Set your Paging file to No Page File or in custom size put zero...then restart your system...

It fixed my ram leak problem ...as theres no paging file so game will not go out of ram and will not use HDD..

If you don't know how to set paging file size...just google it..

Thanks!!

Hope it'll help you guys

Don't make sense, use your ram instead...btw shared memory use RAM first then HDD when full. If you don't have page file ? ram stay full. Nothing solved.

Well the thing was game was working fine for like intial 10-15 min then it starts stuttering badly which makes it unplayable which was pretty much annoying so i checked its usage ...it was using HDD which makes it stutter...i know it doesn't make sense to set no page file but that's just temperory fix until they fix that bug...also you'll not be facing any problem if you have 8gb or more ram

It's a good temporary fix, better RAM than HDD. But the leak will still be there.

Not good and not temporary fix, because ram is always used before page file. If you have hdd stutter it means your ram is already full. Placebo effect guys

But if you disable pagefile, it will not use HDD. It will still eat RAM of course.

Or am I missing something?

Still eat RAM and since you don't have page file..ram needs to be empty before new things loads.

Don't forget you still have vram issue.

This "fix" should work the first 15min. Try to drive fast inside city, load your ram and see
