N7 | Mass Effect Trilogy | Remastered | 2020

For the general Mass Effect thread go here.

I know it's not good form to start a thread a rumour but there is hard evidence to suggest the Mass Effect triolgy is being remastered and due for release this year.

"Recounting their story on Reddit, Waymantis claims to have gone to his local GAME store and pre-ordered the game with the stated 29 September release date. They got a receipt and were able to confirm their pre-order on GAME’s app. However, after advertising their find others were unable to do the same, with GAME apparently realising their mistake – even though they didn’t cancel Waymantis’ pre-order. Not only did they not cancel the pre-order but the date indicated on the app moved to 30 October, which is a Friday and a perfectly believable release date." Metro UK

https://metro.co.uk/2020/08/11/mass-effect-remaster-release-date-october-someone-has-already-pre-ordered-13112754/

"Retailer listings for games are one of the least reliable sources of information online. However, it doesn't stop there. The same user then tweets a photo of a receipt, showing that someone was able to go into a Game store and make the pre-order. They even put down an advance of $5. If the receipt isn't faked, that means that the pre-order is legitimately available in Game's computer system.

The user even provides a screenshot of Game's official website having a reference for the pre-order. A link is provided regarding the pre-ordered product, however the listing it links to triggers a server error. It's possible that the listing for the game is currently hidden, which is common for games that have pre-orders go live alongside their announcements. In other words, the evidence provided for this Mass Effect Trilogy rumor is more than impressive and nothing stands out as blatantly suspicious or falsified." - Game Rant

https://gamerant.com/mass-effect-trilogy-remaster-pre-order-leak/

This is great. I really enjoyed Andromeda, despite the criticism and haven't completed the trilogy. Dabbled with ME2 and really liked it. I bought Mass Effect 1 on Xbox and was going to start playing this trilogy. Now, I get a second chance at playing it with improved graphics/gameplay.

This is why I love remasters. And because of Series X backwards compatibility, doesn't matter that this and Mafia remaster come out now, as they'll run on my Series X and probably with better performance.

I'll keep this thread updated with news.

Yeah, there was a leak/rumour going around, similar to the Mafia Definitive Editions leak (which turned out to be on the money: reimagined original game, HD remaster of II, virtually nothing done to III), and ...I'm in two minds about it.

On the one hand, I would love to see the games get a fresh coat of paint - ME2 blew me away from the moment I first got on board the SR-2, and just a resolution/texture bump would do so much for it. ME1 likewise, and I really hope that the weird lighting/contrast in ME3 gets sorted (at certain times in Shepard's cabin, you can't actually see character's faces in cutscenes, it's so dark - not to mention the lens flares and blue colour grade were really excessive compared to the other two games). Oh, and redo the really naff textures in ME3 - so many outfits looks blurry and cheap from neck down, which was a shame.

On the other, I've seen speculation ranging from 'everything getting remade in Frostbite' (considering how that was the cause of so many of Andromeda's presentation issues, why on earth would you do that?!?), to 'the first two games are getting remade/reworked so that the combat plays more like ME3. And ...no - I personally liked the tactically-minded cover shooting in ME2, where the key was setting up your team in key spots, and getting creative with combos of special ammo/biotic powers/tech abilities. Same with the somewhat-janky Mako sections in ME1 - they're arguably part of the charm of the original, and helped exploration feel more open, so I don't like the idea of those getting reworked to play more like ME Andromeda, or cut entirely.

Keep the gameplay the same, don't change the story (I think ME3 went off the rails from the get-go with stuff like the Crucible, but it's not fair on people who enjoy it as-is to release a revisionist take on it), and keep the gameplay the same. Or remake/imagine everything, more like Mafia DE or FF7 Remake, and don't pretend like it's a faithful enhancement on the original versions. Or, to let Wrex have the final word:

Good points. But wasn't it the fact that they basically made Andromeda in a year because they basically had to restart the thing and do it on Frostbite. My point being, it might not be so bad if they had the time to do this and do it well. Having said that, I'm not a game developer, so I'm only trying to understand why that speculation might be true.

People are saying there might be a announcement in the next week or so. I hope we can get some visuals as soon as possible. There's a serious lack of something like Mass Effect in the gaming world right now. This would be perfect to play through this coming winter.

Wish they'd just announce this lol. I am chomping at the bit for to be honest, really looking forward to playing the games again, playing ME1 for the first time and revisting the second (especially this) and third games.

I'm so-so on what I want from it beyond the obvious visual improvement, I think making a more cohesive experience between the three games could be a good idea as each game has it's own kinks, but I wouldn't want that to come at a negative cost to the RPG mechanics or combat. I've not played it so I can't speak personally, but I've long heard there's stuff in ME1 like the Mako missions that are a giant pain in the arse and maybe just cutting that stuff altogether and replacing it with something less ball achey could be a good idea as well. Some might say it's part of the charm though, so I reckon some people may not be pleased with whatever they do with the remaster.

All the DLC needs to be packaged in as well, that's a must. I'd recommend playing with Javik in your squad in ME3 for sure if you didn't do that back in the day, I was one of the suckers who bought him day 1 and he's basically a lore machine, it's still ridiculously stupid that they locked him behind DLC in hindsight but I imagine they knew people would buy him and it is EA after all.

Wait.  I'm confused.  There are people who have played ME but not starting at 1, followed by 2, followed by 3?   Nutty.

I enjoyed Andromeda.  As far as ME goes I'd say it was just lacking some life.

ME2 is without a doubt my favorite.

For me Mass Effect is one of the few video games that makes me feel like I'm part of a big Star Wars universe.  I'm a first generation Star Wars kid...so a video game that makes me feel like I'm part of Star Wars = feel good video game time for me.  :)

This better be true.

Yeah that's odd. They'd be missing so much. Playing them in order 1-3 is the complete experience.

I can't agree more.  I mean Shepard... ... ...

For real..ya'll owe it to yourselves to play in order for story continuity fun.  If this rumor is true; now's your chance.

Yeah, I'm reading a bunch of fun rumor articles.  This better be true.

Release date being moved to October 30th per a screenshot of a digital receipt.   A digital receipt just turns on my cynical side.  The internet has ruined so many things.  :)

Yeah, back when I was a very dim-witted, casual gamer and GTA was pretty much the only series that existed to me.  I'm still nutty but not that kind of nutty. :D

And besides, who says you wouldn't go play the one before it if you liked the second one? Play it as a prequel? huh? 😛

RPG's weren't really in the mainstream in the 360/PS3 era when ME1 released so a lot of people missed it. Then, speaking personally, ME2 dropped and it got amazing reviews so I figured I'd try it (acquired may be a better word, but I did buy it later) and I fell in love with it. Always wanted to play ME1 but I struggle going backwards in franchises, the visuals are more dated and the gameplay often doesn't have QoL stuff and other tweaks and changes that makes the game a bit less enjoyable. Been hoping for a trilogy remaster for a good while now to actually get around to playing it, and it's why personally I wouldn't mind them making the three games a bit more seamless.

PC version has texture and shadow mods and a couple of other mods that might alleviate some of the more outdated mechanics. Even though ME1 is not as streamlined as ME2 and ME3, it's still a fantastic game that I enjoy replaying from time to time. It's not as outdated as many older RPG's and it doesn't feel tedious to play. Especially when you play it for the first time. There's something rather unique about its atmosphere too. But I'm not sure how much you'd be able to appreciate that atmosphere since it evokes a sense of something new and unknown. And you already played through the other titles.

I'm a huge Mass Effect fan. Played through all 3 games dozens of times, have every single achievement, own collectables, etc, etc. But I have to disagree there. I love Mass Effect 1. But I barely enjoy playing it. I love the world, characters, story/stories in the sidequests. Almost everything about it. But I struggle to enjoy the gameplay. The main issue is simply the shooting. There's no 'feeling' in the feedback. The overheat system is a cool idea, and it can work. But in ME1, it just feels lacklustre. Plus I really love the snap cover system they copy from Gears. ME1 feels to floaty.

Again, I LOVE Mass Effect. But... ME1 has aged poorly. It needs a remake, like Mafia 1.

Especially since your save carries over from game to game and your decisions build up.

I gotta say Mass Effect 2's final mission and ending is just perfect. I still get goosebumps just thinking about it.

Exactly.

I hope everyone knows that.  Your relationship with the Krogan could be entirely different in 2 and 3 depending on how you played 1.  And that is just one simple example.

I do wish the choice with the council at the end of ME1 was a bit more apparent and different, though.

Interesting. I always thought the Mass Effect games don't need a remaster, as they hold up really well (at least the PC version), but if it's true, I'm all for it.

2 and 2 do. But not the first game. The only problem is that it is a beloved game. And like Star Wars with the Special Editions, any changes won't go down well. With PC, you can just get new hardware and change the resolution and you're pretty good. Maybe some high resolution textures. But console players don't have those options. Microsoft's X1X Enhanced 360 games are close. And it's great! Sadly, Mass Effect never got those updates.

The thing with the trilogy is, like some other games, is that they can be awkward to play on console. PS5 doesn't support PS3 BC outside of PS Now and streaming is a very niche thing, so playing the trilogy on PlayStation is going to be tricky going forward.

It's for this reason why I expect we'll see a few 360/PS3 era remasters over the next few years, it'll give the games a fresh lick of paint, introduce them to a new audience, gauge interest in a new game in that franchise and get them sorted long term for consoles which is good for publishers back catalogues. I've been expecting Rockstar to remaster RDR1 at some point in one form or another for this exact reason, as that game occupies a strange spot in Rockstar's back catalogue, it's only playable and thus sellable on Xbox.

Yeah, I'd still like Fallout 3 and New Vegas to be remastered. I'm a console game, and always will be. I can even play Fallout 4 in 4k on Xbox. But a proper remaster, and 60fps would be great. Backwards compatibility on Series X however can increase frame rates this time. So, at least for Xbox users it's not so bad.

Yeah...1 needs a remaster.  2 holds up great and 3 is just 2 with more polish.

Just read an article about Game refunding all the people who managed to pre-order during the slip up.

I still believe.  Believe!

One reason why I don't a expect full-on remake for ME1: importing your character across games. In fact, the one game that needs improvement there is ME3 - BioWare altered the underlying headmorphs for some inexplicable reason, so not only did your custom ME1-2 character look different when imported into ME3 (often with clipping issues), but there wasn't even a way to tweak the features manually, because the base presets were subtly different.

I hope that they've brought ME3 more in line with ME1-2, not the other way around - although at the same time, they could also add the hairstyles from ME3 to the ME1/2 character creators, so you get the best of all worlds. I expect they'll use the ME3 default FemShep face as a preset for 1 and 2 as well.

There's a bunch of stuff like that which'd be good to have fixed - for example, Jack's tattoos in ME3 were just mirrored and copy-pasted, while they're asymmetrical in ME2. Or Liara's basic-looking model in the main game of ME2 - imagine the level of detail they added for Lair of the Shadow Broker (and then ME3), but consistent in ME2 as well - although there'd then be the question of whether it'd be better to preserve/enhance the textures/details of the ME1 version but keep them the same, or just standardise everything over all three games. I'm undecided - it's a question of consistency of presentation, versus preserving the style/experience of the original (see also: adding CGI to the older Star Wars films to make them match later stuff like the prequels).

I hope they remaster the multiplayer in ME3. I really enjoy it still now and again except it's hard to get anyone to join platinum games anymore.

Sure there are, Mass Effect 1 didn't come to the PS3 until they released the whole thing as a trilogy. Which was a year or two after Mass Effect 3 came out.

Though they did give the PS3 a comic that would allow you to pick some of the decisions, so you'd at least wouldn't be stuck to the default.

That's on Xbox, too. For those who just didn't play the previous game. Only DLC I don't own for 2 & 3.

Oh and it's likely to be announced and released in October. At least that's the plan right now.
