Am I Missing Out?

Recommended Posts

CrumMunchers

Hey guys, so a bit of background to this post.

Today's my birthday at the time I'm writing this, and I've been wanting Red Dead 2 for the longest but I can't get it due to other reasons.

So after nearly 2 years, all the gameplay I've seen, and all the reviews (which are mostly good), my question is this:

Am I Missing Out On This Game, Or Is It Not As Good As People Say It Is?

Discuss.

First of all, happy birthday! , secondly, it's pretty darn good. It's one of those games you just have to experience.

I've only played story mode so far, and I think it's worth getting if only for that.
Lovin' it.

I've played both the story mode and pvp on and off for 2 years and I reckon you're missing out but it is still an expensive game to buy and there are cheaper ways of keeping yourself amused so...

Since you are asking this question for yourself, it is difficult to answer since we don't know much about your preference.

Me personally, I was quite hyped to get this game as well and after playing the story mode I must admit, it's not as good as people claimed it to be.

What I liked about this game is that the protagonist is very entertaining, the world is beautiful and NPCs are scripted enough to make you feel like the world is alive. There is a lot of small things you can do like eating, taking bath, taking care of your horse etc that you can sorta set out a routine for yourself and live a life in this world. Also if you play story mission to story mission, you will also get a lot of shooting moments to feel awesome. Physics and horse-handling are pretty damn good in this game.

What I didn't like is that other than the protagonist, most of the characters are not that appealing. The game makes the same mistake as GTA V and rushes through missions when it comes to character development. Ironically it is slow enough with everything but it doesn't use that to make you actually care for the people and its world. Plus it doesn't quite feel as free as other open world games, you always feel like Rockstar is guiding you through every experience and essentially RDR2 is more of a interactive story experience rather than a game.  Also people praised a lot for its story but I personally don't agree with it, it's very generic story that may be presented well. It doesn't help that it's a prequel so a lot of stuff will happen for sake of it to ensure RDR1's established story isn't disturbed. So sometime the game does a poor job at telling a story you probably heard a lot of times before of redemption and betrayal (it's a Rockstar game, duh!), and when it actually does a good job at it, it won't be much special either because it won't be anything original. There isn't much of a twist to it. Also the game, much like GTA V, doesn't quite commit to anything. It's a Western game but it doesn't quite feel Western enough, the betrayal isn't painful enough, Arthur isn't as ruthless as he should be to even need a redemption IMO nor is the demise of the gang as horrible as I hoped it to be. The game takes too long to make a point, a point that is usually not worthwhile for me.

At the end of the day, critically it is a 7/10 game which it has rightfully earned. For my personal experience, I would give it an 8. I can understand those who give it a 9 but I don't agree with the 10/10 reviews.

At least 9/10 from me if not full 10.

Yes you are missing a lot. Its in my opinion the best game ever made. Depends of course what type of person you are. If you get bored too easily and dont watch cutscenes etc then its probaly not for you because its pretty long story actually. ..I finally finished it earlier this summer and now i just have to wait for rdr3 if it ever even comes.

I just like this game the most. Best story from rockstar games for sure and everything about it. Its not perfect but nothing is anyway. ..i really wish they do story dlc

First, what is your standard for a good game? What are you looking for?

In the story department the game had a long, slow-paced story. Its more like a western series than an action movie. Its not a "feel good" game either; the story is more similar to GTA IV than GTA V. Violence and brutality isnt glorified. Its a story about survival, death, revange and redemption mixed with some dark humor. Character development is on another level compared to most games.

The gunplay is slower, more deliberate and "clunky" compared to other games. I prefer to call it more realistic. For example, you have to pull back the cock before you fire your revolver. You have to clean your weapons to keep them in good shape. There is animations for most actions, such as looting a body. Animations are slow rather than twitchy. It feels like you are controling a human being rather than an avatar. Again, gunplay is more like in GTA IV than in GTA V.

Its also more punishing. If you make a mess your bounty stay until you pay it off. NPCs might remember you and what you did. Changing apperance can help as well as covering your face.

Even minor crimes, such as by accident running over someone with a horse, can get you in prison (and worse if you resist arrest) unless you manage to talk you way out of it.

If you start bar brawls the law might demand you to leave the town. Resist and its arrest. Resist that and they shoot at you.

If you act like a gta online player, towns will go under lockdown and bounty hunters, sometimes with attack dogs, will constantly try to track you down until you are either captured, killed or pay the bounty. If a dead body is found the law will investigate it and remove the body. If you are within the area they will question your involvement in the crime. Point is: its not in GTA.

There is quite a lot of side activities, not just action related, but mundane tasks such as feeding your horse, shaving or shopping wood.. And hunting, bounties, or looking for treasure, etc.

In terms of details and graphics, its the most impressive game out there. In terms of graphics for consoles the game looks best on xbox one x. The landscape and lightning is amazing. Snow and mud has its own physics. This isnt an opinion: with 4k and hdr few games if any of this size comes close to rdr.

If you thought gta presented a living breathing world its nothing compared to RDR II. Even animals, such as bears, have their own life and act in a very realistic manner. Ive seen bears hunting fish. Watching me as i stand in the distance. Seen dogs playing in the mud. Hawks diving for their victim. Foxes looking for food by digging into the snow. This happens all the time wheter you are watching it or not. NPCs do all kinds of daily tasks. The world doesnt revolve around you.

Simply put, to me this is the best game ive ever played since 1997. Period. I give it 10/10. Perfect? Nope! I could make a long list with complaints. But if rdr2 doesnt deserve full score i no such score exist.

I dont want to wait another 10 years for rdrIII, but trust me I will.

It's a contender for best game ever made imo. It was a return to form for Rockstar, they did the exact opposite of almost everything that made GTA V so awful. And I don't think the medium has ever been used more effectively to tell a story. I also don't think there's ever been a stronger and more consistent prequel. Despite how successful and well regarded this game is, it might actually be a little underrated for just how good it is.

A game like RDRII will continue to be underrated. Lot of people on Metacritic complains how the story is too long, gameplay too slow, controls too complex, too much horseriding. These are the most common complaints from people.

The style of GTA: Online and COD is what most people like.

I love GTAV OL I just started it in story mode and am already enjoying it immensely, I play online sometimes but its hard to get anyone to join and or stay if you have absolutely no idea what you are doing like me.. So I just tend to steal a car and have a bit of a laugh then flip back to story mode.

Suffice to say the gun play is realistic as someone already said in GTAV, IN RDR2 anally so but still realistic, if you can't clean your weapon though see what happons irl, misfires are common and you can blow your own face off, is this realistic yes, is it too realistic: matter of taste.

I haven't played RDR2 myself yet but from what I can see from a gameplay standpoint doesn't it continue a lot of the problems from GTA V (that weren't present in GTA IV and RDR1)? Specifically very heavily scripted missions with no room to improvise, heavily scripted and therefore repetitive/predictable and sometimes clunky movement/animations when interacting with the environment or in gunfights etc (seriously every single RDR2  "kill cam" headshot I've seen looks exactly the same with the head going back the same way every time), toned down physics, and annoying strict law enforcement and the addition of the vague crime of "disturbing the peace" meaning you constantly become wanted by accident for standing by someone/knocking someone with your horse/defending yourself etc.

I love the story/writing, environment, characters and detail of RDR2 but I'm suprised more people haven't complained about these gameplay issues that are so obviously carried over from GTA V. Knowing about them honestly puts me off ever playing it.

I think you're expecting miracles I don't personally think there are any game play issues R* have created something special with the realism, if you don't like it don't play it tbph.

Story mode is fine, Online is fine. You can't please some people.

This is why almost all games companies do not talk to people, too many whiners, too much sh*t and frankly it is disgusting. having been a beta tester for Ubisoft and worked inside gaming for quite a while, I know just how hard the game, any game is worked on, but no one is ever going to be completely satisfied you can please some people some of the time...

You're perfectly entitled to offer feedback, in fact they rely on it. What annoys game companies is when it becomes a barage of memememe.

I worked on CIV as a beta tester for a while, and I think that is well realised, but you are never going to please all of the people all of the time. For FirAXIS SAKE.

Pobodies nerfect. ::)

You can like the game or not but I just think it's clear that RDR2 includes many of the negative aspects GTA V brought to gameplay, which weren't present in GTA IV or RDR1. It's weird to me that no one acknowledges or talks about this and just says it's better than GTA V, when it has more in common with GTA V than any other Rockstar game and pretty much every negative aspect it has comes directly from GTA V.

It wouldn't be a "miracle" to, for example, not have a ridiculously strict police/wanted system in RDR2 when they already achieved that in games previous to GTA V (namely GTA IV and RDR1) and had already received the feedback that people didn't like that in GTA V. The game is amazing in many ways but that doesn't mean it had no room for improvement.

Quite agree Billie. Constructive criticism is the foundation of any good game. Whining though...

At the end of the day GTAV is the best selling game of all time, RDR is the second best so clearly R* is doing something right.

I mean this is probably the only negative post I've ever made about this game lol. Looks great and I'll certainly play it when I get the chance even just for the story and environment alone, but I'm put off by knowing a lot of the stuff that spoils GTA V for me is in it. And it's just kind of weird to me that people criticise these things in each game separately but don't put them together.

Fair enough you were probaly due a little whine. sufice to say the graphics in GTAV and RDR2 are simply astounding but meh. If there was an award for just going holy f*ck R* should pick it up. The love care and attention they have put into the scenery is absurd. 😛

2070 GTXsuper, 8 gig. Geforce enabled graphics card.

The only game I've seen  that remotely tests it like RDR is Metro but that is just silly and eye melting. Absurdly good graphics.

I don't even play the game so not really a whine 😛, I feel pretty neutral about it, just a response to a post saying it did the exact opposite of almost everything that made GTA V so awful. Definitely don't want to discourage OP from playing since as mentioned I haven't even played it and do think it looks like an incredible game overall.

Too much horse riding? Hate to break it to those people, but that was the way they got around back then. lol

People who want fast paced, shoot everything in sight type games won't like the story but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The problem I have with player reviews is that everyone has their own preference to what type of game they want and how they like to play. If you want the shoot-em-up type of game, the story has some but that isn't what the story is about. If you like story type games, there are none better.

Sales really don't prove anything. A majority of players, of many games, never actually finish it. I'll give myself as an example, I got GTA5 free through Epic, so I don't know if that counts as a sale but I played it for 3 hours but then deleted it. It was not interesting to me at all. So if I had paid for it the sales numbers would go up but it doesn't mean I found it a good game.

Looking at the online side of things, PS4 version has been out for a few years, PC for about 1. A large majority of players on both platforms are low ranked, below 100, which shows that most people don't play very long. But online is a different beast.

First off, if it's the worst nonsense you ever heard you haven't been alive very long and you don't watch or read much "news".

So, which part do you consider nonsense? What people are actually buying is the story. Has always been that way. That is a-one. I'd recommend it to anyone. Online, the throw in, plays like a throw in.

If you don't believe that many players never finish the game they pay for, any game, do a google search on the topic. Then ask yourself why didn't they finish. It couldn't be that they didn't find the game that great could it?
