Suicide Squad game announced with Superman as the villian

To be honest, I don't get it.

If I were a betting man I'd say this is designed as a service based game from the get go, much like the Avengers game. I'm expecting a heavy online focus, progression, loot, etc.

If it's not that and is in fact just a proper story based single player / co-op experience then it'll be great, but... it won't be that.

hopefully it just focuses on single player like the Arkham games. just the idea of SS going after Superman and/or the justice league and having them be the villians is intriguing.

Yup. Every time I think "hmm, maybe I should consider that Avengers game", I remember it's going to be a 'live service', probably with seasons/passes/FOMO out of every hole, and I bounce the f*** back off it. :sigh:

(same with Halo Infinite - I used to love me some way back when, but all the recent talk of free-to-play multiplayer, 'battle passes', battle royale modes, etc. is just ...ugh, no...)

I mean, maybe it'll be more like Forza Horizon 4, where going live-service just meant 'regular injections of new things, but which also come back if you miss them the first time around' - that wouldn't be bad at all, but I suspect that part of the reason Playground Games don't resort to milking people with FOMO tactics is because they're making money from being a 1st-party studio and having the game as a staple of Game Pass.

Overall, I'm interested in a Suicide Squad game in theory (more so if it's more like the comics, less like that movie :barf:), but not if it's doing the whole 'what if Superman bad, because edgy?' thing - however, someone pointed out the purple tint, the apparent scarring around the eyes, and ...yeah, if it's using Bizarro to do a 'we created our own Superman, but he's now out of control' scenario? That would be interesting - and the idea of something getting out of hand, and the Squad being used to bury it quickly and (relatively) discreetly makes more sense than something where you'd be better off asking "isn't this just a job for the Justice League?".

(that'd possibly explain why there's no 'S' on the cape, too - yeah, it's more likely to match recent live-action costumes, which haven't bothered with it, but it would help disguise Bizarro by not having the reverse S in the teaser pic...)

As I've said previously, somewhere, I'm actually a big fan of service games, or rather, online games with progression and leveling and looting and all that stuff. Love 'em to bits.

However, I'm not a fan of when AAA developers do them because they water them down and in pretty much all cases have no understanding of what people actually like about those games. Destiny, The Division, Anthem, they're the most well known examples (but there's a few others that fit the description) and while they actually almost all play from good to great gameplay wise, especially Destiny which feels great to play, everything else is like the baby version of what they're trying to do, and coming from the non-baby versions, despite the fact I'm a huge looter nerd I haven't been able to get into any of them.

It's for this reason why I'm meh on Avengers, I'm a GIANT Marvel fan, comics, film and TV, I've been waiting for a proper AAA Marvel experience for yonks but Avengers makes me go meh cause it's Crystal Dynamics first stab at a game of this type and I know, even before the mild beta impressions, that they weren't going to hit the heights I've been hoping for. Never the less I was still interested to buy it just to play through and have a bit of fun with it, but that was before Sony got their mucky hands on it and ruined a lot of my interest for it with exclusivity deals.

But anyway, I have the exact same concerns here. It might play really well but if it is going after the looter RPG crowd I'm gonna be very cautious about it.

Sounds like it's a 1-4 player, story driven game not coming out until 2022.

It's hard to even form an opinion really, so far. I'm curious as to how the story is going to work. One of my biggest pet peeves with Suicide Squad stories is that often times there's no real justification for why the government sent bad guys on a particular mission rather than soldiers. Not sure how sending these four to deal with a rogue Justice League makes sense but I'm interested to find out, one way or the other.

I like the idea of running around an open world Metropolis, though. Not sure how I feel about having three bots follow me around everywhere yet.

So, the trailer is "Alpha target" or something - aka it's CG. So once again, it's yet another CG trailer with no gameplay that might as well not have a date because who knows if it'll actually release in 2022. What I will say though, the game must be gigantic. This is going to be SEVEN years between Arkham Knight and Suicide Squad.

The only other thing really is that I hope it has more than four playable characters tbh.

Christ is it really co-op?? That can take away from the single player experience imo, and they mastered that in the Arkham Games.

It has Sunset Overdrive vibes, that's cool i dig it..but If this is in the same universe as Arkham then Deadshot should be white like he was in Arkham City and the animated film they made.

Yeah, it really feels like a waste of the Suicide Squad to limit it to just four members. I imagine it makes it easier to balance the characters, story, and gameplay though. Sefton Hill said each character is going to be more robust in terms of moves, gadgets, etc. than Batman was in the Arkham games.

Excited to see what a proper co-op Rocksteady experience is going to be like :D our circle's a big fan of the Arkham series

Interesting that both this and Gotham Knights are co-op though; we were expecting the latter to be an SP game (and defo not one with RPG like elements lol), but we're gonna keep an eye on it :p

Sunset Overdrive with a bit of Anthem, with the characters being vaguely based on the Ayer movie versions, set in the Arkhamverse - and Braniac's either in control of Metropolis, or was, but hasn't been dug out by the time of the game.

And that's either mind-controlled Superman, or it's a bait-and-switch for Bizarro.

...still not sold on it, honestly - although I'm wondering if that trailer is supposed to be representative of how the actual game will look. Someone elsewhere pointed out that hair/clothing physics (or lack thereof - like when Harley's lying down, and her hair doesn't move all that much) might suggest that the trailer is in-engine - and I'd be inclined to agree, since things like textures don't seem like a million miles from, say, Insomniac's Spider-Man, and that's not even factoring in that this is a next-gen game coming out two years from now.

And besides, previous Arkhamverse games have used outsourced CG trailers that still manage to look better than current cutting-edge games, even a decade later - so I can't imagine them not doing that for Suicide Squad, unless the aim was to show something more like the finished product:

For a Suicide Squad story to really work, you need a superhuman thread too esoteric for normal forces to stop, but probably too morally grubby for superheroes - like being tasked with killing the target, not just subduing them. That, and threats dangerous enough that while a bog-standard soldier probably has no chance, a D-list supervillain might not fare that much better either - they're nickname the "Suicide Squad" for a reason!

And that's the thing that gets me: the Squad originally featured a revolving cast of more obscure characters, with there being a genuine risk of them getting killed off during an assignment - you couldn't have a Squad featuring Two-Face, Metallo, etc., because no-one's going to kill them off permanently. But Sportsmaster? Yeah, he might bite it in issue #2.

...except now, the Squad revolves around established recurring faces, who ...will probably live to see the next story. I think you can sum up everything wrong with how the series gets handled these days just by pointing out that Harley Quinn is viewed as a core member of the team. :turn:

Would have made gameplay more fun. While on assignment Someone sees some fancy jewelry steals it and makes a run for it thinking they're going to get away then boom. They die. Next mission a new villain joins the team.

...aww - and now I'm imagining a version of the game where you get to pick maybe one 'big name' character who can't die completely (but might get incapacitated for some/most of the game if you screw up), with the rest being procedurally-generated minor villains, who can die if things go horribly wrong, and get replaced by another randomly-generated nobody. Think a cross between Shadow of Mordor's "Nemesis" system, and Watch Dogs Legion, creating countless disposable baddies that'd look like exactly the kind of forgettable one-shot characters that you'd see getting mulched in the comics.

Just give them a bit more depth and it could work. DC has a pretty big library of characters too. A lot of minor people who we don't care about at all. Rocksteady would just have to do a lot of work in giving them unique abilities though for some.

not a fan of coop sh*t and not a fan of this new artstyle. Mostly because Harley and Deadshot don't look like Arkhamverse Harley and Deadshot at f*cking all.

Guess I'll just wait until this coop capevidya era is over so they go back to the good old singleplayer adventure formula.

Yeah it's weird, this one feels like it would have been better off starting a new continuity and Gotham Knights feels like it would have fit into the Arkhamverse just fine (minus the Gordon thing) but they did it the other way around.

there had been some very good co-op games though, like left 4 dead and payday (before it went to sh*t with stupid decisions from the devs)
