The Legendary Animals Thread

Recommended Posts

ALifeOfMisery

I would like this thread to serve two purposes.

Firstly, rather than information being spread across numerous threads throughout the RDO section I'm going to compile information that comes directly from Rockstar regarding Legendary Animals here. I will update the OP with any new information as and when it comes.

Legendary Animals

Tips and tricks

•Check your Legendary Animal Map (accessed via your Satchel in the "Documents" section) for available Legendary Animals to track and hunt in Free Roam.

•Legendary Animals will often attempt to run away from you – make sure to have plenty of Bitters for you and Stimulant for your horse before seeking one out. Use some Legendary Animal Pheromones (available at Harriet's Shop) if you’ve lost sight of the animal.

•It is not advised to use Legendary Animal Pheromones until you've already received a notification that there is a Legendary Animal in the area.

•If you're struggling to find Legendary Animals in Free Roam, check out the Legendary Animal Map that Harriet gave you, and make sure to visit her often for updates on which animals have been spotted and where.

•Completing more fields in the Animal Field Guide will also result in more information on the Legendary Animal’s preference for time of day and weather.

•Throughout your progression in the Naturalist Role, you will rank up your Eagle Eye making it easier to track and find Legendary Animals.

Locations, times and conditions

Legendary Zizi Beaver. This species prefers the low light of dusk and dawn and is unperturbed by weather.

Secondly, as there seems to be issues with spawning Legendary Animals at the moment, I would like players to post information about any Legendary Animals they encounter in free roam.

All posts regarding successfully spawning a Legendary Animal should include whether you were in a public or solo lobby (no judgement here), your Naturalist rank and the Naturalist rank of any player helping you to spawn the Legendary Animal.

These posts should operate on the basis of "video or it didn't happen" as information such as the time, weather conditions, how the animal reacts, where it flees to, does it attack, other animals that spawn alongside it, etc. could help other players have successful hunts.

One thing I've noticed, so far that is.. The time of day and weather has has not been consistent. I've encountered only 2 Legendary animals in free roam so far. I'm on PC. First was the Sun Gator I spawned into camp and fast traveled to Lagras. It was just after midnight, I was in a full lobby of 24 players. I am rank 20 Naturalist. I rode over to the Bait shop and sat there for about 5 mins and I got the "Legendary Animal in area" notice. It spawned in the middle of the swamp just north of Lakay in the water. It was perfectly clear weather and there were no other players around. Getting my horse to it was a pain because it was in the water and there were other gators everywhere and they were aggressive.. Coming after me in fact. My horse was of course being a little bitch the whole time. It bucked me off and I managed to swim to an Island. This entire time the Sun Gator had not moved and was submerged in the water. As soon as I got onto land on one of the island it started moving towards me.. My Character was on alert so I couldn't use my camera (another thing I hate) so I just unloaded on it with my shot gun. Don't remember how many shots it took. The second was the Ozula Elk. I had just switched lobbies because of Hackers, and Spawned into Camp, By some miracle it was just me and one other player in this lobby. I fast traveled to Armadillo, started riding north to Twin rocks and I saw the yellow ? on the map west of twin rocks I got no "There's a legendary animal in the area" notification this time. Perfectly clear weather, no rain or fog. middle of the day. I took some Blending tonic and was able to get pretty close and sedate it. It charged me but as soon as I got the final sedate shot about 6 rounds it stopped.

For those who want to sample all Legendary Animals,  and that can't spawn one (like me), I have tracked the L.A. that can be sampled via missions / activities (list perhaps not complete, to be updated) :

Harriett missions only :

-Night Beaver

-Sapa Cougar

-Rutile Horn Ram

-Inahme Elk

-Moostone Wolf

-Payta Bison

-Icahi Boar

-Cross Fox

Can be sampled via Legendary Animal Protection event (sampled automatically if mission successfull) :

-Emerald Wolf

-Iguga Cougar

-Onyx Wolf

-Sun Gator

-Teca Gator

Can be sampled via Wild Animal Tagging event (sampled for player if ANYONE samples it) :

-Ozula Elk

-Maza Cougar

-Iguga Cougar

I had one Ozula Elk in Free Roam when I was Rank 5, nothing since. I will continue to update this post as I continue trying events, tell me if you have encountered other L.A. in events.

True. I'm sure that I find Teca Gator by the day and a clear weather. I was driving from Saint Denis by the train tracks doing a Anthony Foreman mission. 3 lobby players and level 18 I think.

Then, every 48 minutes or 1h I found two more L.A. in the same lobby. But no more luck with the two gators.

Ive noticed no other events can be going on in the area at the same time. You have to knock down any hideouts, moonshine, rescues, etc. I've been able to spawn the Iguga by Quakers rather consistently by clearing out the hideout, moonshine roadblock, and the rescue. Then the cougar spawns almost instantly under the tree. As soon as I shoot it, it does charge.

Public session. I generally join, and fast travel to be away from other players, and avoid their conflicting spawning of animals. Have for ages.

I am Naturalist, rank 20. Seems to spawn day and night, any weather as long as nothing is going on near like I said.

Yep, same here. For me it spawned around 2pm on a sunny day. I was on PS4 Pro, I’d been invited to a solo private lobby, I’m Naturalist rank 20. I’m not sure what Naturalist level the other person was, but they were up in the Grizzlies, nowhere near St Denis.

In that same solo private session I was also able to get the Marble fox and Sun gator, so the solo session seems to have been a major factor (I’d only ever previously seen one free roam legendary, on launch night). It’s worth noting that in the solo private session I was seeing a tonne of ‘white blip’ stranger events, and free roam Moonshiner missions were popping up every 10 minutes it felt like.

The Sun Gator finally spawned for me, the one in the Bayou. I had literally just loaded up the game, galloped into the Bayou and saw the ? on the map. Have heard that session swapping is the best way to get spawns, which I imagine is so you can find a session where LA's aren't on cooldown?

It was about 6pm in game time and had just finished raining, so the conditions weren't right for it either.

Nice.. This worked for me first try.. It was 10PM. public lobby 18 players. Fast traveled to Blackwater and started riding towards Quaker Cove. Just outside of Blackwater a random event occurred it was a duel between two NPC's as soon as it was over the Cougar spawned. Thank you. Rank 20 Naturalist. I'm on PC.

1 go to "change appearence" stay 1 minute

2back out to freeroam,go to the teleport at Mcfarlan ranch.and teleport to your camp

3start trader sell mission.

4Now you have 20~30 minutes solo lobby .search around , legendary animal can spawn during sell mission. as the timer is up.close the game to avoid losing your cargo.

Level 20, zero free roam sightings.  tons of disconnects and session hopping, only thing I've found is severe frustration.

I feel your pain partner. I've spent 2 hours this evening in a loop of ride around the bayou, change lobby, ride around the bayou, change lobby etc. etc.

It isn't fun.

Had this fellow spawn just a few minutes ago- I'm level 20 in Naturalist, and it was 21-player session, at about midnight. On the island nearest to Sisika's island.
I managed to sedate it but couldn't sample it because it was being camped by four max-aggro gators that killed me until it despawned. I am not happy.

at this point need to prepare the explosive ammo sry people

Even that won't save you in this instance, unfortunately.

At some point you'll need to get off your horse and go through a sample/skin/pick up/stow animation and if someone really wants to p*ss on your bonfire all they have to do is wait until you're defenceless and they could make it pretty much impossible.

I'm on PC, yeah.

Still pissed about getting gator-camped until it despawned...

Just sampled the Teca Alligator via "Legendary Animal Protection" Event, which mean that BOTH new gatos can be sampled using this event, if you're in luck.

It seems that Legendary Animal Protection events are entirely focused on predators.

OK so I've been experimenting with a few things. As ilRae said in an earlier post it seems there can't be another event spawn in the area.. Moonshiner roadblock, Random event, Stranger rescue etc.. So I've had about a 75% success rate on getting LA to spawn after clearing an event in the same area where the animals are. I cleared a moonshiner still sabotage at emerald ranch and as soon as it ended the Tatanka spawned. I rescued a lady right outside of Lagras from alligators at night and as soon as I dropped her off the Sun Gator spawned. I stumbled on a random encounter outside of Blackwater (a duel between NPC's) as soon as it ended Iguga Cougar spawned. All of these were in a public lobby with at least 15 players. One I got was in solo it was the Marble fox but again I cleared the Colter gang hideout and it spawned right after. I think at any given point there's a chance that either a hideout, moonshine, rescue or a legendary will spawn. by clearing the random I feel it increases the chances for LA dramatically.

I got the sun gator on the second attempt doing this...I have been trying normally since Tuesday.  I knew about the character change solo, but adding it with a solo sale extends it for 20 min.  Should add that when in the character change menu, I think its best to adjust something before backing out.  Thank you for posting.  FYI, I am on Xbox and it was 1230 on a clear day...near lagras fast travel
