Strange flickering between game and desktop

Recommended Posts

Badman_Juan

Hey

Before the update yesterday, I minimized rdr2 whilst it was starting up and since then I've had this issue. The problem is every minute or so whilst playing, the game flickers away revealing my desktop for a few frames, then reappears.  If I minimize the game and do something else, rdr2 will maximize itself after a couple of minutes.  It happens even with no keyboard/mouse input from me.

I've performed a system reset to the day before, verified integrity of the game files, deleted local account from Rockstar launcher, tried playing in windowed mode.  Before this it worked perfectly so I'm stumped at what else to try... apart from a reinstall but that will take about 2 days >.<

Link is a short vid of it happening.

https://vimeo.com/manage/442684174/general

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Looks like the game may be losing focus due to something else in the background, as this is what it does when you switch between monitor inputs. Check if there's nothing interfering in the background.

I've got the same problem and it started right after yesterday's patch.  Running the same system configuration and game settings as usual, this only started happening right after the update so it's not a coincidence.  Someone else described the same issue on another thread, too.  Working with R* support, I'll let you know if they send anything useful.  So far the suggestions have not resolved the issue, but they're responding very quickly.

Thank you both for the replies.

Ah ok, sorry to hear you're having the same issue.  If you get anywhere that would be great if you could let me know.  I'll post on here if I find any solution.

You might want to open a ticket with R* support and upload your video so they can see what's happening and be made aware that it's not an isolated issue.  Will keep you updated for sure!

You must be playing in borderless window mode or windowed. That doesn't happen to me in full screen but it did in borderless window. Don't know if it happens in regular windowed mode.

I've got the same issue and run in full screen so I think there's more to it.  Worth double-checking though, so thanks

Well, good and (maybe) bad news.  Someone on a different thread suggested deleting the cache in the RDR2 documents folder.  (All of the SGA files).  While that didn't resolve the problem right away, after playing for about 20 minutes, the flashes to the desktop stopped altogether.  Was that the resolution?  Maybe.  Or maybe if you just play long enough the issue resolves itself.  Can't hurt for you to try.  The downside is that after about 2 hours, the game crashed.  Which is something I haven't seen more than once or twice, and I've been playing since release.  Anyway, thought I'd pass along the advice, see if that helps with the desktop flickering at least.

I'm having this issue as well, before the game loads.  HDR is not working either.  It doesn't show up in the options...Working fine before the patch.  In the video settings, it output adapter 0 and output monitor 0.  I vaguely remember, but I think it used to have the name of the GPU.

Ok. I haven't had the problem in full screen. It has to be one of the graphic settings. I have no clue as to which one.

Just to mention, I use 2160 resolution with 90% of graphic settings set to low. Only texture is set to ultra. I'm pretty sure those of you having those problems are on a different res with everything set to high or ultra.

Since the update (2 days ago) I didn't observe this short flickering between game and desktop.

But, today I started experiencing this phenomenon too. This happened after an hour of flawless gaming and kept on persisting. Every minute or so it reappeared.

Strangely, I didn't change anything. So, why does it appear now and not earlier?

Guys, let us know what R* says, Thanks.

I run the game in fullscreen mode on a laptop (NO external monitor):

AW 17 R4 (Mar 2017) i7-7700HQ, GTX 1060 6GB (driver 446.14), RAM 32 GB, SSD 1TB

Win 10, Build 1909

What resolution? What graphic settings? I seriously doubt it's a hardware issue. It's got to be something in the settings.

Laptop monitor 1920x1080 (native)

Texture Quality on Ultra

Rest mostly on Medium.

Vulkan.

I get 45-60 fps.

As I said above, until now no graphics issues with these settings, and this since months.

The more I've been looking into the problem, the more I read about others having the same problem.  No changes in settings which otherwise worked perfectly before the update, now getting brief flickering to the desktop after.  Only thing that changed was the update.  I suggest opening a ticket with R* Support, if only to make them aware that the issue is happening to multiple users.

Dang, I was hoping....

Nothing further from support yet, but I'll keep you posted.  Did you open a ticket, as well?  I've seen multiple users talk about it now.  It's not affecting most, it seems, so we are the lucky few.

If you're using Vulkan, dx has nothing to do with it. As far as msinfo, they are doing their usual thing...making it look like it's the user's system that's causing the problem which is BS if so many other are having the same issue. I got the same responses when I complained about some things...verify files, blah, blah, blah, only to find the issue was on their end all along since the recent update fixed those. Rockstar really needs to let people know they are aware of a problem and are working on a fix rather than always trying to make it look like a user problem. If I was the ONLY one having a problem, yeah, I'd accept that it was on my end.

Ok, since I use a much higher resolution I can't really help with lower ones. All I know is I don't have the same issue but I am NOT saying others aren't having it.

I'm with you, it's as standard a response as "verify the game in Steam" or "unplug it and plug it back in."  But you gotta go through the process to get anywhere, you know?  If going through the motions gets us a fix, it is what it is.  Enough people submit a ticket, they'll eventually do something.  Hopefully.

I'm observing the issue with "Full Screen Optimization" disabled on RDR2.exe - so, I could try re-enabling it. 🙂

Their "tech support" is an outsourced group, not Rockstar tech people at all. They use a script. All Rockstar has to do is tell them to change the narrative and just tell users they know of the issue and are working on it. Even when I tell "tech support" I did all those things before I sent in a report, they still tell me to do them. I don't think they really read the reports, or if they do they don't know what they're reading.

True, of course.  As you probably know, the vast majority of users don't know the basics so they employ a third party to ward off simple solutions without wasting dev time.  This isn't some silly user error type problem, though, so eventually they'll forward the issue to R* tech.  My hope is that they get enough reports of this problem and hot fix it before the next "major" update because it's super annoying.  Not only am I still having the issue, but it's now freezing after 1-2 hours, as well.  It's not my specs, nor the settings.  Something got messed up in the update.  Always had better results on vulkan, might switch to DX12 (lord help me) just to see.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Not to give false hope, but I switched from Vulkan to DX12, played for about 30 mins, and haven't had the issue since.

I switched too but the issue persists.  It's a bit different though for sure.  Rather than flickering to the desktop, I just get a few black frames.  More tolerable than Vulkan for sure though!  Hope that sorts it for you and thanks for the heads up.

Well, couldn't get worse I guess.

The advice from R* support.

1.    Re-install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 following this guide: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/turn-windows-features-on-off#1TC=windows-7
Make sure that .NET Framework 3.5 is completely off. Then press OK and restart your computer. Then re-enable .NET Framework 3.5.

2.    Re-install Microsoft Visual C ++ 2008 SP1. You can refer to this article: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=5582

3.    Re-install DirectX. You can refer to this article: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35

4.    Uninstall the game and the Social Club application in that order.

5.    Install CCleaner and run the scan.

Re-install the game and Social Club. Before starting the game, update them manually.

Got a similar laundry list, but not the exact same.  Thanks for passing it along.  I already told them the suggestions they sent me didn't work and asked what's next...keep ya posted, of course
