Making a side character in a previous game a protagonist

Would you like to see a character from a previous game return but as a protagonist? R* has done it before with Toni Cipriani and Victor Vance in LCS and VCS after they were just minor characters in III and VC. R* has created a lot of interesting characters over the years and they usually just move on now and forget about the minor characters and bring in a new set of characters in a new game instead.  With the HD universe they tried to establish a new continuity but what good is it if you're hardly going to use much of the characters you've created and are just going to use them once and then throw them away. Yes some of the side characters they've created recently haven't been that interesting or deep but I'm sure out of all of them a few of them could carry a game on their own. How they rose to their position in the criminal underworld, what they went through, more background on them.

Whether now or in the future if R* ever decides to revisit these characters here a few who I think could carry a game on their own.

Dwayne Forge -  I'd love to see 90s LC with Dwayne at the height of his empire. He used to run uptown. Apartments full of money, how he ended up owning the Triangle club and dealing with Cherise, Jayvon, and mentoring a young Playboy X.

It could even work as a two protagonist game in two different eras. The 90s and 2004. In the 90s you play as Dwayne in 2004 you play as Playboy X.

The second part of the game would take place sometime in The 00's when Playboy X assumes leadership of the gang and takes it in a new direction.

The game could show how Dwayne's friends change over time. Jayvon going from one of Dwayne's best friends to being an informant and selling him out. Cherise being loyal to Dwayne then cheating on him. Playboy's relationship with Dwayne having him as a mentor and then not visiting him in prison. How Dwayne gets the Triangle club and then Playboy X handing it over to the Trunchez brothers.

Mikhail Faustin - A prequel about his rise to power in Hove Beach in the late 90's how he comes in takes over and builds his empire. His relationship with Dimitri and Vlad. His status in the LC criminal underworld was he really that important? How did he get along with Kenny Petrovic? His descent into drugs. He'd be kinda like Trevor but a bit more serious.

Elizabeta Torres- She's a woman living in a tough man's world. How did this Puerto Rican woman end up becoming the most feared kingpin in the LC underworld?

Manny Escuela- Before he changed his ways he was a gang member of the Spanish lords in Bohan. A game set in the 90s before he became that famous metrosexual street preacher we all know and love.

Brad Snider - With the limited screen time he had in V I didn't find him that interesting but that could also help R* flesh out Brad a bit more and make him a more interesting person. Who was Brad? Where did he come from? Did he have family? It could explore what led Michael to set up his deal with the FIB maybe we see when Michael first meets Dave but from Brad's point of view if possible, Setting up heists with the other old crew members, along with Trevor and Brad's relationship what did Brad really mean to Trevor? It could end with setting up the heist in the prologue in V with the crew getting ready to enter the bank and then the credits roll. Set the game in Carcer City use it as a backdrop if it's in the Midwest or North Yankton.

I've realized I included too many IV characters try to see if you can make a convincing case for other characters in V or maybe even the 3D era games.

interesting topic Zello.

I'd argue that having side characters as protagonists in LCS and VCS kinda spoilt their character somewhat. Then again, this is a different era now and Rockstar are very different.

Interestingly Rockstar did not do what you propose in RDR2 but instead invented Arthur - perhaps they would do something similar in GTA?

Regarding IV's characters, they are far far better than V's and assuming VI is the same era as IV and V (which probably will be canonically) then I'd like to see some cameos. As main characters though? I'd prefer not, to be honest. I think we need a return to a single protagonist and one that was not in either IV or V - both which sadly faced much criticism.

That could also work. Invent a new character like Arthur but have them work very closely with the side characters.

There isn't a single character from GTA V that I'd want to see return to any future GTA titles. Kinda feel they've done the whole side character as protagonist thing already with Johnny and Luis.

New character and new city would be the best bet IMO.

You're right DRV.

At the time I was a bit irked with IV but its interesting that Zello listed many good side characters from the game that I wouldn't mind having crossovers/cameos in VI. V though? I almost want to forget it happened. I took can't really think of any I'd like to see again. Maybe I need to play it again...

While I would like to see a brand new protagonist, if I had to go for an already established/mentioned character as protagonist these are my choices

Sammy Bottino - He didn't actually appear but only had a profile in the LCPD database in IV and was mentioned in V, but I find his description quite interesting

From the wiki

Quote

Bottino was born in Little Italy, Algonquin, in 1965. According to his daughter Antonia, Bottino "pretty much ran the East Coast" in the 1980s and 1990s. He had been Don Jon Gravelli's right hand man but went into hiding out west in 2007 due to murder charges being pinned on him in Vice City. After going into hiding, he was replaced by Roy Zito as the acting underboss of the Gambetti Family.

If they go for a past setting he'd make an interesting protagonist imo, was the right hand man of the powerful Jon Gravelli similar to Toni and Salvatore.I really like the 'ran the east coast' part, seems like he was a considerable force in two decades and was active in both Liberty and Vice City it seems, so he works in a Vice City setting as well. Plus his eventually going into hiding and getting arrested and becoming a snitch could make for a good ending. The Commission in general seem like they have a lot of untold stories to tell, so chronicling the rise of the right hand man of the Gravelli family could be a cool story.

A choice from V

Gustavo Mota - May not be the most appealing choice but still he's potentially been through some intense heists in V already, he's pretty skilled and he also has prior history with the Vagos which maybe could be used to build his story. Say he moves to Vice City to start afresh but his reputation as an ex Vagos member catches the attention of the Hispanic gangs in VC. Plus his feats in Los Santos catches the attention of the Cartels in the area. He isn't an established character as such so they can go wherever with his character, but he's also clearly skilled as a gunman and has an interesting history so from V he could be a minor character that could potentially be a protagonist

For a smaller story, sure. Something like a DLC/Stories game. I don't really know who though. Packie could be interesting. he fits the profile of a protagonist quite well.

I don't want to be a hacker. That's more for Watch Dogs. If you want a female protagonist I'd rather play as Taliana Martinez.

It's been done. It performed poorly so they didn't keep making them.

Oh, yeah! I've always felt that there's some kind of charm about this man.

Seriously, though, I'd say Billy Grey. I've always wanted to see how it would work had him been a protagonist. Would've been even more interesting if R* did something remarkably different like having us choosing the protagonist we want to experience TLAD's story through, in which some events would work differently if you chosoe Billy.

Couldn't agree more. As much as I believe in giving the benefit of the doubt and as much as I love Rockstar and want to think the best, it might be a clue how long it's been so money focused. They tried it one time and then gave up - the literal opposite of what you do to build an income with episodic content. Story content always underperforms and sells more later. That's literally what makes their upfront/launch numbers so incredible - that they will continue to sell to new players for a decade. That's what REALLY gets investors going. Top sales are one thing. GOOD and IMMERSIVE single player experiences sell for ages and build sales on their own backlogs and sister entries AND They know that! We have seen them display that they know it with similar strategies.

The saddest part is that if they kept doing episodes, they'd be making more money than anyone else in aftermarket additional content hand over fist better than 2 GTA Online's, there is no doubt in my mind AND - ANDDD - they would be able to use all new content that came in them in GTA online and introduce 4 to 8 mission long lines from a character or two in each SP campaign for online use. It would have been over 9000 times better but they listen to their wallets instead of their core fanbase. They listened to the mouthbreathers that squeaked on their IV online offering instead of the core fans who would have sold millions of copies of those episodes that - what was is 800k and 1 million each during their DLC life? That could have been 5 to 15 million sales every 3 to 6 months for them with 1/3 length stories, yearly trilogies (3 to 6 months = every 4 months in this example) and little 3 act arcs of story each year like seasons and they come with online content and all that.

They are making a lot more money than they did, but for a company that tends to observe and critically illustrate and even tends predict the movements of society so well, they sure were short sighted as 'F' with their own brand to have gone the direction they did. Shortsighted, tone deaf, greedy, and seeking too much expansion too fast, and they make more now, but have ABSOLUTELY missed out on billions Beyond that which they would have been getting into right about now, on the long-tail of the story content, people joining in, then buying the backlog. They would be 'F'ing minting right now. Their RPG-lite-like mechanics they are known for peppering in to make each story unique (darts for them, cards for them, etc), they would OWN the adventure, even the click/dialogue adventure market by now. They could have been so much more WITHOUT sacrificing any of what they have, and what they have could have EASILY been better and more expansive and thus even more lucrative just by, again in other words, just by having a few extra lines of dialogue for some more online missions each story... so many options... saw it all, thought they'd do it. Nope. lol derp rockstar. They abandoned story based expansion long ago - back then - before [suspected] problems with Dan, before Benz before him. Before they even made the impossible trinity possible with V switching mechanic - before it went to sh*t - so they don't really have an excuse except they just were not at all as smart with the brand as they thought they were, and in my opinion, they were not as responsible with the brand as they SHOULD have been. If the brass tax is money, they have left a lot of it on the table. They got the quick buck and if they pivot to this they'll mint but otherwise it's just another soulless mp game with a SP tutorial right now. What will VI be? I guess we'll see if we even get one!

CAPITAL LETTERS, Y'ALL.

Edit: Not fair and super far off the mark for me to call V soulless and basically a glorfied tutorial. It is a masterpiece, there's no denying it. Preferred the direction of IV's interactive technology, but that's not a point against V, it's one of the top best games and would easily share #1 with any other game out there any day. But it lacked a bunch of SP content for players they didn't even know they could have attracted for years now and they've milked it so much when it could have been what it was before all of this: A cultural icon. It is not that now. It's soap right now. It's marketing right now. I hope we get some good news and that it comes with promises of massive focus on story content that comes over the course of years. The market is hungry for "series based" games on GTA level. Witcher did amazing. They are dumb if they keep doing superficial audience only. sh*tty games are taking money from audiences that could be theirs while they focus only on the mp people, and their influence is something to think about as well.
