Nothing really ruins it as long as you have a handful of friends and you can mess about, it's a sandbox game after all, up to you what you  make out of it

However, using Vigilantes in heists kinda takes away the fun. I can't see why ppl enjoying sitting in a car and just spamming the X while the auto aim locks on. Same for deluxos/mk2s in contact missions.

I think that both have lost their potency in recent months. The Oppressor riders are so crap that they are easy to defeat, and Lazers / Hydras can be gotten rid of just as quickly using the explosive sniper.

I noticed this too, positive side-effect of the epic giveaway* & the small nerfs/qol changes, 75% of griefers is clueless af & easy to defeat now.

* = and purchases of ppl who just missed that boat/got their free acc banned but want more, dunno about you guys but i noticed a rather massive rise in new players on pc for a few months even after the giveaway, seems to have slowed down again now

It's funny asking this after all these patches and updates that ruined the game well when the original oppressor dropped that was a good idea since all players didn't care about blowing anything all they cared about is a flying bike and that was a pretty great idea well an idea that did not last for so long bcz when the Mk2 dropped that was the first disaster players were grieffing and going after supplies and moving crates more often bcz now they have a flying bike that can shoot missiles I am not saying Mk1 are much better but it still better bcz you need to go down to the ground to charge the boost aka the only thing that made it able to fly not like the Mk2 with a jet engine and the Mk1 you will only get like maybe 30 sec of air time,The second disaster orbital canon it may seem a litlle expensive to use just to blow players or crates but money does not mean anything for griefers and well the third disaster it is modders well that term is mstly popular in pc sessions or old gen consoles bcz well they don't care about anything but ruinnning your life and getting you banned and it happened for me once got banned by their harassing actions

Can’t find a single deathmatch lobby on xbox one servers. Hoping they’ll be up and running again on xbox series x. Super lame.. one reason to still play GTA4.

In my humble opinion, what ruined has the experience for me has been a combination of Rockstar's absolutely sh*t support staff, and general incompetence when coming to managing their online games; and the ever-growing toxic communities of GTA:O.

EDIT: Forgot the biggest reason; bugs. Glitches. They're rampant and horrible most times, and if they're any fun or make things easier for you, like for example launch glitches, clothing glitches (ex. the pouches from the DCH update can no longer be easily transferred onto other tops and vests, severely limiting what you can do with them), things like the glitch where you could put crates in your Avenger, or any generally fun ones; they're patched, almost instantly. Punishments could be handed out to you for them too, who knows.

And then R* leaves the real harmful ones unpatched; CEO Crate Titan glitch, Godmode Speedo, Flares not distracting missiles properly, massive desync for no reason, missions just completely breaking, getting scammed on your Casino Heist and given only enough money to buy some P&Qs; it goes on, and on, and on.

This is what truly sours me towards R*, and sadly, towards the online games I once really enjoyed. It's depressing seeing the games get rapidly worse in terms of glitches.

Honestly, if R* fixed all of these harmful bugs and continued to, and maybe just maybe let us keep some outfit, launch and QoL bugs in the game as a feature, then I'd be fine with R* patching heist repeats someday, and going completely legit again.

This. This so much. Just because of this, I kinda wish Saints Row Online or some type of competition would come up against R*. Then I'd either have a new game to go to, or R*  finally would start cleaning up their act.

Freemode PvP for me has gotten real boring for me recently, it usually just devolves into killing brainlets in hilariously bad ways because of how generally situationally unaware and incompetent they are. For example; getting a griefer to shoot down his pal while they're attempting to 2v1 dogfight you, killing people with Nano Drones, RC vehicles, an RCV/firestruck, drivebys in Stockades, and making tryhards mad by evading their every strike in an Alpha Z1. It's kinda sad that these guys are so unclever and unintelligent that smart tactics in PvP are becoming dull.

Once weaponized vehicles became a one man army weapon instead of requiring 2 people (one driving, one on the gun), but the grinding in general. Freemode used to be fun back in GTA 4 and they perfected it in Red Dead Redemption 1. The main point of online was to have fun with friends and to play against each other which was why freemode was so barebones. Looking back, GTA Online was supposed to be different. You were supposed to play the contact missions, deathmatches, races, and after a few hours of having fun you could spend the money you earned to get better cars, guns, armor, for those activities, but then they started making money harder to obtain and decreasing the incentive to help anyone due to how badly they treat associates and other MC members regarding pay. Team Deathmatch was one of my favorite modes in GTA 4, and now you can barely find a full match of people that want to play unless there's double $$ but that only lasts a day or two until people get bored. It was supposed to be different.

I can’t even get most players to even engage with me. I find that the majority of players avoid me like the plague.

They're probably right to, assuming their skill in PvP amounts to a wet paper bag trying to carry groceries, which is it's only purpose to do

True. I’ve noticed that most of the OP2 riders are hopeless these days. There was a time when many riders were really good at scoring a kill with the non-homing rockets against players on foot. They can’t seem to do that any more.

Nearly every player quits those Freemode jobs (piracy prevention, torched, executive search etc) if they start losing as well, which is infuriating.

I see this in pretty much every online game I play. Folks aren't on the winning side, they hit pause and disappear.

If I win, and if the job allows, I give the winning prize cash to the job starter just for playing to the end.

The other thing that I have started to do, is to self-restrict the hardware I bring out in order to give them a chance and make it a bit more fair. For example, it is really easy to go off the radar, fly the OP2 to get ahead on the route of a CEO doing an Import / Export car collection or delivery, wait by the roadside and steal his car as he passes. So now I chase them in a regular car trying to force them to crash or try and kill them with the Uzi. It makes it a bit fairer and more of a challenge for me. But they still quit.

I'll say the Opressor ruined it for me. The Lazer was a treat, but something that we could go against. Then the Orbital Cannon was the final nail in the coffin. Tryharders ... meh, I just ignore them.

That Shark Card bullsh*t ruined it for me right from the get go.

I don't even have PSPlus right now, but on the rare occasions I do play online I just fly around in my Starling for awhile.

The day finally came and I've uninstalled the game on my pc. Cheaters ruin the game and they roam free all over.

So now I quit and I doubt the new dlc is worth anything for pc players. Time to run some old games while I wait for that Cyberpunk game.

Cheaters ruined the game for me. Sad but true.

You sound like a griefer.

Why would you go after a CEO that’s minding his own business?
I’ve always assumed that proper etiquette was to leave people be unless they have a bounty or attempted to attack you.

Why would the CEO stay in the session if you steal his car or force him to crash? He’s better off to leave the game and hope like hell that the vehicle is back at his warehouse.

I don’t get it. People run business’ and crap because they need money and probably enjoy doing whatever it is without having assholes come and mess with them.

Edit.

Online is still fun for me but I can see it being ruined for people with griefers like yourself.

Please give me a CHANCE to FAIL MY OWN MISSION! Rockstar? Buy an entire studio that can design you better mission structure. We get you can't do it all...

I could get into a long and protracted argument as to why this isn't "griefing" within the confines of this game's inherent structure. It has been done to death however. There is no "proper etiquette" in this game, that is just something that some players have convinced themselves that there ought to be.

There have long been wails of despair from players who don't like having their MC deliveries destroyed. So other players move onto stealing their CEO delivery cars (hey, the game is Grand Theft Auto after all) but now the teeth are being sucked because of that too.

So you try and play the more PvP orientated jobs like Torched, Piracy Prevention and Haulage (see video below of me hijacking a Haulage trailer) and players like the guy in the video (900+ rank no less) tantrum and quit because I engage them at this as well.

I have even been called a griefer because I stole all the Business Battle crates in the newer Business Battle games that appeared this summer.

I mean, what the f*ck are players expecting when they log onto this game?

They expect you to not shoot back. They expect you to not use all the tools the game gives you to exact revenge. They expect you to let up. Nope. No rules in combat. The chaos is freeing, if you embrace it.

I tend to avoid engaging players in Freemode now unless they are

Already in a shoot-out with other players - I'll go and join in, usually siding with the group of least players or lowest rank

Delivering or collecting an Import / Export vehicle, which I will try to steal.

Doing any of the PvP jobs - Haulage, Piracy Prevention, Torched, Executive Search, Stand Your Ground etc - they are all fair game for engaging players in

Ghosty Face griefers on Oppressors or in Jets tearing up the lobby

Attack me or try to run me over first

Playing anything like Hot Property, Hunt the Beast, King of the Castle

Playing Business Battles

There's no sport in blowing up MC supply runs, Heist set-ups, smugglers run missions, nightclub deliveries or Gunrunnng supplies, unless they are a large, well-armed and capable crew, with high ranking members.

I never attack those who are harmless or making money. Still never a shortage of targets.

I love when people come after me during Hunt The Beast. Planning a route that bounces me all around so they loose track of me is great. It’s the one thing that I use the the OPMK2 for. Make players work extra hard for that kill. Listening to the surprised reactions from people that get blown up make it even better.

Sadly though most everyone gives up or just doesn’t bother looking for me.

You know instantly if it is a noob or not who is the Beast, because they rush impatiently from one marker to the other, regardless of who might be in the vicinity.

Griefers, I can deal with
Noobs that mess up I can tolerate
Rockstar making racing unbalanced with every car they release. Meh... hackers already ruined racing anyway, all world records are like 1 sec or less.

Really the most annoying thing is the lobby system:
If I just want to jump from game to game I gotta sometimes get back to freemode. Which is a massive amount of loading. I swear from the over 2000 hours I spent in this game, I bet that 500 is on loading screens...
There has to be a better way to do this...
