When you buy Vice City for the PC

Read all the yellow text atleast, lazy person you.

I have some say on this, and I'm not one of this "TIHS IS BETTTAR!!" - dickheads and I'm not starting a poll. Although I have an opinion after playing GTA3 100% on the PC and GTA Vice 100% on the PS2.

I just want to make sure that noone will miss out on certain aspects of Vice City that made it such a great game.

Ok, so I never bought a PS2 and so didn't own one when GTA3 came out, but I was well hyped about the game and a GTA1/2 lover, and only got some GTA3 playing time at a friends place, and I thought the controls were kinda odd, but they didn't bother me too much. Just VERY hard to get used to, and I never really did.

So anyway, so then GTA3 came out for the PC, and I bought it, played it, loved it bla bla, played through it 100% and all that. Twice. :sigh:

So anyway, like alot of people I thought that the controls were PERFECT with the mouse and keyboard, and I couldn't in anyway understand how anyone could prefer the PS2 hand controller over the free aiming of the mouse.

But then, ofcourse, Vice City came out. Wa wa same deal, no PS2 and very little play time at a friends PS2. And I thought, "Wowee, this game will be soo much fun with the Keyboard/mouse!". And I ofcourse waiting like a monkey like everyone else here who doesn't own a PS2.

But then someone I know was getting rid of his PS2 and sold it to me really cheap, and I ofcourse got Vice City right with it (this was 3 weeks ago). And at first I didn't really want to play it with the sh*tty controls, and I thought I would probably get a better experience with the game if I waited for a PC version.

But, if you have Vice City and a PS2 in your possesion you PLAY it.

Ok, so now I've done that. Alot.

And me, a former solid "PS2 controllers SUCK ASS!" has now changed his mind completely.

I mean, the game is just so much more cinematic, stylish and FUN with the ability to, for example, WALK with the analog stick, in any view, crooked towards the screen or whatever. And the aiming system is the coolest and only way to aim in a videogame I think now. I mean, locking on someone while walking the other direction, stretching your arm out sideways or in any direction the person is standing. Or just walking past someone while shooting him on the ground, while the camera automatically zooms out to show it. Genius ideas.

Not to mention the vehicle steering. Because of all the analog buttons. Move the stick up on bikes and you will stand up leaning forwards to enable stoppies, as everyone knows, but move up just SLIGHTLY HALFWAY and you will crouch forward enabling your bike to go FASTER. Or pull down to do wheelies, or pull down while turning your bike to do a quick 180 turn.

But the controller is not just good for bikes. You can drive cars or whatever and just turn very little, so you don't have to do the tap turning on almost straight roads. And if you hold down the gas button (X button) just slightly you will drive very slowly, and the harder you hold it down the faster you will go. Umm, just like a real car.

My point of all this was, though, I hope everyone will atleast try to play with a controller with the PC. I mean, I can't imagin how much of the game would be taken away when you only see Tommy from a locked perspective from behind, and you can only jog and sprint with no moving his arms while shooting. I mean, all the animations that wouldn't be used. Like the animation when you walk with a chainsaw. The BEST animation in the world :sigh: waaa sorry, and all the Pedestrian dialogue you won't hear because you can't lock on targets.

I don't know about you, but I'm GETTING a PC controller, in one way or another, when Vice comes out. And trust me on this. All this ^ is coming from a guy who thought that only a monkey would prefer the hand controller. And now I'm one of them. :/ The two different ways of seeing the game just can't compete.

I also noticed that on the PC recommended requirements list they've added "gamepad". So.. If you want to play the game the way it was supposed to be played, get a f*cking gamepad.

Thank you.

i prefer a controller.

it is horrible to use keybord and mouse blargh!

controller is way easyer to use, more comftable and better if u want to relax rather than leaning over ur desk.

wow quite the rant... good stuff though.

I disagree with you on the PS2 controller, I think it's the best controller known to man. The damn-near mirror image on the other side is great, and the buttons never seem aquard...

but enough of that stuff.

I now own the BOOM ps2 to USB converter, so I am playing my PC games on a ps2 controller, The only way to go in my opinion, the converter costs 10 bucks, ($12 if you want a PS2/N64 to USB converter) and a new controller is somewheres around $20. You'd be hard-pressed to find a good controller for that much.

My gta3 experiences with the controller has proved than neither the keyboard or the mouse is the clear victor. It's an amalgam of the two. certain missions, IE: bomb the base, rescue the orientel man for DL (forget the name of that one) Need the mouse and keyboard, while one the other hand I can't drive without my controller, and uzi crime-sprees just wouldn't be the same.

So in conclusion, both have their strengths and weakness' My recomendation is to go out and find the BOOM! Ps2 to USB converter, a controller, and learn how to switch back and forth... it's easier than you expect.

Man that was kinda ranty too.

IN CONCLUSION THEN dickhead

I used to be like most of you. Loved the mouse/keyboard controls and hated* the PS2 controls. But now I've, thouroghly, played one game with the PC and the other on the PS2, and now I realized just how much the PS2 controllers add to the game.

Wasn't pointless, the point of the post was to tell everyone here like me who play GTA with the mouse/keyboard, that they really are missing alot. And they will miss alot of Vice City if they don't use a controller.

mer cinder: I think you misunderstood me. I think the PS2 controller is great. Anyway, thanks, I'll get a USB convertery thingy when Vice gets out for PC.

EDIT:

*Hated in the terms of playing Vice City with it.

Anymore of that name calling will result in you getting a star!!

They are simply giving their views to the question/rant/debate that you posted.

On topic though. I prefer my Ps2 pad anyday but there is a time and a place for Mouse and keyboard controls. I would rather play Unreal and Sof2 with Mouse and keys..

Just a question of taste...

Personally, I prefer classic controls for GTA3.

I've been playing GTA on PC since before GTA3 was announced.  Even when I got the PC version of 3, I played it with just the keyboard and the classic style controls.

The PS2 Controller adapts to classic style pretty well though I prefer keyboard (No mouse) to anything... kinda weird but that's me :-)

I also like locking on to people, but I think that'll be added in even for keyboard/mouse this time so you can rob stores in that mode.

Both controller and the mouse/keyboard setups are good , both have pro's and both have con's. Controllers are good for driving because you have the analogue stick to steer and the controlling is more fluid than a keyboard but I really like the mouse/keyboard for shooting mainly because I am a FPS player at heart. Plus you can see a lot more of Liberty (or Vice) because you can look all over the place. You react faster with the mouse aiming too because the PS2's auto-target can be hokey.

Why does everyone bash the PS2 controller. Its practical , simple and efficent. Much better than the X-Box and Gamecube because they are a bit complicated.

As I said, I didn't want to start another stupid poll. All I'm trying to say is that I used to prefer the PC controls 100%, hating the PS2 controls, but now that I've played through Vice with the PS2 controls I've noticed that it was 10 times more fun. And if you try playing Vice with the analog sticks you'll notice this aswell.

So just give it a long try before you make judgments, cause you'll miss alot of the game if you play with the mouse/keyboard.

What exactly makes the PS2 controller better than a keyboard and a mouse? I think the PS2 controller is complicated and you can't make as fast moves with it...aiming is also a much harder task than with a mouse...

So you suggest that I should get a controller? Is it really worth it?

What controller would you suggest? The Locitechs are pretty good :/

Why don't you read Samoth's frikin post? It's all there, under 5 mins of reading. C'mon you caffeine junkies, can't you sit still for 5 mins?

Anyway, I'm with Samoth. Actualy, I didn't realise that whole thing with the animations gone to waste before I read this. That's some wise words Samoth... thanks man :)

Oh, and for that aiming thing... It's got auto-aim smartass, a press of a button, and you have a clear shot, sure can't do that with a mouse. :sly:

And to me, auto aim takes all the challenge (aka fun) out of the game too.

Anyways, I read everything in this thread and I disagree with most of you.  I'm just the opposite of Samoth.  I played GTA 3 all the way through (several times) on my pc with the mouse/keyboard.  I then got a PS 2 a few months before VC.  So I've played VC all the way through on the PS 2 and I must say that the PS 2 controller simply doesn't do the game justice.  With a mouse you can look in all directions as you walk, making it much easier to quickly change your direction.  But, believe it or not there's something superior to the mouse though. The P5 Glove.  I haven't tried one of these out yet, but it's the first truly innovative controller I've seen for 3D environments and FPS's.  It's not out yet for consoles though.

But yeah, the PS 2 controller is good for driving instead of the keyboard.  So I'll most likely be using my gamepad for driving, flying in the pc version and the mouse/keyboard for all on-foot action.  However, my personal opinion about the PS 2 controller is that it lacks any innovation,  Why?  Maybe because it's the same damn controller for the PS One, and it's certainly no friend to an FPS.  Bleh, it's all just personal preference though.  Like some one already said, all controllers have their pros and cons.

Oh yeah, Samoth, what makes you so sure that Rockstar will srcap the cinematic camera angles in the PC version.  For all we know, the auto aim feature and fancy camera angles could be incorporated with the mouse.  I'm curious if they'll include this or not myself.

But the thing is, with the mouse aiming is much easier and precise anyway, so you dont need the game to help u aim.

Never the less, i still wana get a pad to try VC : PC with. Ive thought about getting those ps2 pad converters to make them work on pc.

The only thing is, iwill there be an auto aim function available with the pc version? if not wont it be a tad hard. Unless roackstar have already thought of that and enabled this with the choice of using the pad, which im sure they must have :/

Autoaim should be available in the PC version. It was for 3 and it's essential for certain spots in the game (No, not in firefights. When you're robbing someone)

When you're robbing someone

Yeah! I got to think of that too... How da hell are we going to rob da stores in VC:PC without auto-aim? I'm sure R* thought of that, but how? :wtf:

I think that a controller would pobably be better and a ps2 would be best  but i am a key board junkie and have my controls set just right and can function just aswell on it as i can on a controller

And as for auto aim i think that takes the fun out of killing ppl rather use my own aiming abilities

KBD/Mouse or gamepad for the pc?

Well since the game doesn't support analog gas/throttle anyway (Wich sucks horse balls btw, and they should burn in hell for it) it all comes down to quick reaction time and precise aiming with mouse. But VC has autotarget also, so you get the best of both worlds. Play with both :-) Now I want you all to mail Rockstar and demand that they implement axis recognision in VC, so that we can use steering wheels and gamepads with analog throttle/brake, along with Thrustmaster Freestyler Bike, which I bought just for this game and midnight club2. Go ahead now. Do it.

how can you say analog stick is better for driving my gosh people use the durn arrow keys your turning radius is supremely low and what was that crap about half way as if you can't do that with an arrow

I played GTA3 all the way on ps2 and then on pc with mouse/kb. Mouse and kb are my choice even while driving. I have idle fingers ready on left, right, handbrake etc for better reaction to traffic. If I want cinematic I'll watch a movie or wait for a cutscene. I like games like Hitman 2 and Max Payne and the pc version is basically the same on foot.
