Grotti Vigilante
Unfortunately I still cannot do polls as of now, so I just won't bother trying and instead wish to see more personal answers. But with GTA V coming to PlayStation 5 in 2021, many are rightfully annoyed that after seven years, Rockstar hasn't even given us anything close to GTA VI, nor any other titles except Red Dead Redemption II, which has quickly stopped being supported and doesn't seem to be a priority in future endeavours. Some have argued that it's good that we are left with so long between games because it's better than Rockstar rushing out GTA Next to just end up with a poor product. Back in the mid-naughties we had a GTA releasing every one or two years, and they were all high quality titles. Times have obviously changed and we need more time to create a good video game, most especially in the case of Grand Theft Auto. I do see how this can be beneficial, but at some point is not appropriate to ask what's taking so long? Should there really be such a large gap between GTA games? For me, I'd say no. I would argue that seven years with just one title is way too long, especially without story DLC that hasn't supported people who don't want to play Online like many of us. GTA IV was supported for up to two years. That game came out in April 2008, The Lost and Damned came out in February 2009, and The Ballad of Gay Tony and the Episodes from Liberty City DLC came out in October 2009. But it didn't end there since them two titles soon released on PS3 and PC in April 2010. GTA IV was supported for two whole years after release, and during that time we also got Chinatown Wars. But since GTA V we've had nothing except Online updates which have only gotten considerably worse for some of us fans who don't play Online and would prefer story DLC. At this point I firmly believe that it won't be until at least 2023 when Rockstar finally released GTA VI, which will be a whole ten years after the last game. After so much time, one could hope it would be worth the wait. But I personally think that there is such a thing as too much time. At a certain point I do believe it will never be worth waiting that long for a new title. GTA VI could give us the whole state of Florida as a map with all interiors being accessible, and I still think it'd probably have taken far too long. I thought that RDRII was worth the eight-year wait, but since the title is no longer being supported after just two years, that's six whole years at least without any sustenance for us fans of the series. Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad if we got other Rockstar titles alongside it, but we have not since GTA V bar RDRII, which again is no longer being supported. I can't put an exact time on how long we should be waiting, because I obviously want high quality titles from Rockstar Games as much as everyone else, but if I have to wait so many years for one without any support for other titles, or any new titles in between, I think it's honestly not worth it. With all the studios and money Rockstar has, I don't think there's any reason to take so long. But what do you all think? How long are you prepared to wait between GTA titles, and under what circumstances would you wait? Would you hold on to the previous title if it continued to receive support, or would you be fine to get other separate IPs while you waited for the new GTA? Let us know your thoughts down below, because this has really interested me lately. Patrizio and Bob Loblaw_
Jeansowaty
I think that it's high time we would receive some spin-off titles for Mobile devices. Maybe some taking us back to the 3D era too... GEETEEAYEE and Gummy
GhettoJesus
If the development for VI is fresh and it didn't start back in somewhere 2014-2016 or so then I would say it's a disgrace that Online took up all of their energy. I understand that RDR2 took up a lot of R* North's energy but was that clever from R* then. Was it really necessary for North to be so involved with the game? I would have rather let 95-99% of the work to be kept by San Diego and give the rest to one other studio than give a slice to everyone. I am ready for the other R* studios to impress me. I am really interested in what R* India is capable of besides having a head in RDR2. Or some 3rd party independent company employed for a game like Team Bondi (but with a less tragic ending for the company). So I am ready for a new IP while waiting for GTA VI, I don't mind that at all. Edited July 2, 2020 by GhettoJesus
Patrizio
Great topic . If it is ten years then I think there’s a danger of no fan being satisfied due to the sheer gap between. That length of time risks fans being underwhelmed, which would then be (for some) three underwhelming GTAs in a row (in their “era” so to speak - IV has saved itself somewhat due to V). I think your question depends on marketing - if Rockstar released the logo now then 2-3 years wouldn’t be as bad. The fact that we’re still waiting for any bit of info makes it worse, if you know what I mean. Whether or not V releases in 2021 they need a GTA logo in October 2020 otherwise a number of us will just drift away as life and adulthood takes its hold. You could argue that’s natural, but some of the older crew on here have another GTA in them, but they can’t wait forever! Merquis
TheSantader25
5-6 years. More than that is not fun tbh. Especially if there are no real competitors in the genre. Edited July 2, 2020 by TheSantader25
Niobium
meh, GTA V is a mediocre GTA game and the last great GTA game ever made was EFLC, so for me, it's been 11 years since rockstar has released a high quality GTA game. since it's been so long and since GTA V was so disappointing, i really don't care about GTA next. i'm still playing older GTAs from time to time. god speed, Merquis, Patrizio and 4 others
KGBeast
Maybe three years for a main entry. But I'd rather we went back to the old days of GTA as an actual series rather than a sporadic event. Ideal would be a main title every 3-5 years with a spin off game or two inbetween. There is something massively wrong with this picture: 2001-2009 - 8 years -III -Vice City -San Andreas -Advance -Liberty City Stories -Vice City Stories -IV -The Lost and Damned -Chinatown Wars -The Ballad of Gay Tony 2013-2021 - 8 years -V -V -V I don't care if the older games didn't have huge maps and last 150 hours. At least we regularly got to visit new places and experience new stories. That's what I want. I want new games, I want fresh experiences. I do not want to sit around stuck with the same mediocre game for a decade. I no longer care what the future of the GTA series holds because nothing could be worth the last seven years of horsesh*t from Rockstar. billiejoearmstrong8
I wouldn't mind the bigger gaps if they'd continued the awesome story DLC thing they started with IV and Red Dead Redemption (and I suppose LCS and VCS were kind of a version of that beforehand too). They have the talent and means to create something really special with DLC, to really make the most of the amazing game worlds and stories they've created as well as tide fans over between games for a bit, and the sole reason they stopped is although it would be profitable it's not as profitable as online crap. It's a real shame, such a waste of artistic potential. Edited July 3, 2020 by billiejoearmstrong8 Patrizio
GTA-Biker
I was hyped for GTA 6 for around 5 years,I was hoping R* would announce it after the release of RDR 2 at end of 2018 or the start of 2019,but honestly I lost pretty much any hype for it by 2020,especially now that they are making PS5 version of GTA 5 instead of finally making GTA 6.I'd still like if they would finally make GTA 6 and when they do I'll probably buy it,but I also wouldn't be surprised if they wouldn't make it for a few more years in favor of milking GTA 5 for as long as they can.All I can do is reminisce about the good old times when R* would give us a new GTA game almost every year. I guess the "gap" depends on whether: There is DLC They begin to market the next entry The gap can still feel too long, but if the above occur then its not as bad. Currently of course we have neither which makes the gap far too long. I've said it before and I'll say it again - I'm very grateful I was of the generation that experienced III, VC, SA and IV in a 7-8 year period. We didn't know how lucky we were then. Same. If I really want a recent quality R* game, I would just buy RDR2 now. Gameplay-wise I think we have peaked in SA and IV/EFLC while graphically V has me covered. It will take a lot for Rockstar to make me care about the next game. Niobium and iiCriminnaaL
Lotte
Maybe this is a side effect of GTA online becoming such a drag and me getting literally a 1500+ games for $50 or whatever but like...I think i can wait a few years for either the actual next GTA or a game from someone else that does the things I like about GTA well
Americana
When I was in kindergarten my dream was to play Grand Theft Auto III... when I was in primary school my dream was to play Grand Theft Auto IV... and since then I've never been so hyped for any Grand Theft Auto game. Grand Theft Auto V? Yeah, well. Okay. Never mind... Grand Theft Auto VI? Maybe... but for me it should be more like Grand Theft Auto IV, and I'm sure it won't be... unless...? Jeansowaty
I just got myself thinking. Has anyone noticed how different the quality of the new GTA O vehicles is? What if... what if Rockstar is adding in new vehicles and possibly weapons, characters even to GTA Online with the intention of bringing them back in a potential GTA Next? Eh... one can dream....? I think somebody had a theory about this. Haven’t they added older cars into it recently? They also did it before IIRC, with TBOGT and MP3 having weapons that would go into V.
