Why did Rockstar do such a bad job on the map?

GTA SA map felt soo much bigger than GTA V despite supposedly being not even the half of its size.

GTA V's map layout is just lazy as hell. I mean, seriously, a highway that just circles the map?

It doesn't feel like a SoCal state at all. Blaine County feels like an industrial neighborhood north of Los Santos. It feels like R* didn't really know what they wanted to do.

Other people might feel me on this: The freeways in LS are a total clusterf*ck. Now I know that's true in LA as well, and it's partially my fault for not buckling down and remembering what goes where, but this is the only GTA game I ever get lost or take the wrong turn in. Learning the layout and flow of the map in any other GTA is very natural and effortless, but here I still confuse the road to the airport with the road to the bridge over the docks, getting turned around out by Lester's because of the tangle of ramps and overpasses, that kind of thing. After almost seven years and thousands of hours, it gets hard to see that as any thing but bad map design.

Doesn't really help that LS is just a big blob with no sense of flow or direction to begin with.

Nothing's wrong with the map in my opinion besides the "small" desert.

Game set in LA with only one movie studio = failure.

Thats what confused me the most, I expected to go into V finding all these cool little areas, multiple movie studios, stuff like that, and we only got one and a “rough draw” of LA

That's kind of the funny thing, twice in the same generation Rockstar had already released games with better LA maps, you think they would have learned something.

MCLA's map is actually pretty well done, the way they went about it is interesting. All the major streets and landmarks are there, they just cut the redundant stuff and reconnected the rest. As you go down every street the stuff that should be is there, and at each intersection the right stuff is there. If you go to 1st and Grand you can see the Disney Concert Hall. Figueroa and Pico there's the Staples Center. Wilshire and Alvarado you find MacArthur Park. Between Ohio and Wilshire is UCLA. The list goes on, but the way they were able to truncate and compress the city while still basically connecting and orienting everything correctly is really impressive. Highly underrated game.

I wouldn't say it was better or worse than V's, it's all subjective after all. Midnight Club L.A. did have a damn good map though.

In fact, I'd say the entire game itself still looks great to this day.

I just wished they made the Gang Territories bigger... I feel each different set in the gangs had they own area instead of them sharing the same 2 streets... In San Andreas They had their own neighborhood but shared the same models... GTA V they had their own models but shared the same neighborhood...

Well you said it yourself. A "re-imagining" of LA, therefor no it isn't suppose to be accurate. If it was a recreation, then yes it would have to be.
