The thing that never gets old about Vice City

Recommended Posts

VC Vigilante

Is Vigilante sub-mission, I've must have sunk 100 hours of just playing that mode on Vice City over the years. Its my favorite game in the series and the game overall is timeless however from pure gameplay point I think its the best using a non-hunter/tank vehicle. So many don't realize what they're missing by just simply skipping the sub-mission by using something that turns it into a chore rather than a game. Every time I play it something new happens I've never seen before and usually something funny as hell too. There are so many variables at work. I used to use the FBI cheetah and mess around in any part of the map but I find using the first spot is the best for vigilante. The other side of the map has a worse road network and the criminals spawn in more awkward spots making it tedious.

I got the idea to try it at the very beginning of the game to see how far you can get, its actually very tough and I've only made it to Level 8 on the PS2 and Level 10 on PC. There is a YouTube video of someone who got super close to Level 13 but died right before, however frame limiter was OFF. You have to have some luck with the time rolls building up at the beginning. By far the biggest threat is the stupid ass cops busting you in a myriad of ways. The 2nd which becomes more of a danger further in is the criminal shotgun which is cheap af. They seem to have perfect aim from far away but if you shot accurately from the same distance good luck nothing will hit. At the start you can only have 100 armor 100 health so shotgun hits are super dangerous. I wish Vigilante% was a speedrun category since there is lots of strats and unique runs so I might start doing some on Twitch.

I think the best part about all of these games are the new things you can discover, open world games usually lead to varying and unique experiences that differ from person to person. Keep me up to date about the vigilante% stuff that you would like to do on Twitch, I like watching that kind of stuff in my spare time.

True, I'm noticing all sorts of programming quirks just playing vigilante. There are the obvious ones and then ones you see once in a blue moon. I never fully mastered VC so just recently I discovered some new item spots and heard a "busted" dialogue I had never heard before where Ken says, "Officer (slight chuckling), my client wasn't even in town that day!". For some reason the game can't randomize audio dialogue like that because so far this year I haven't gotten the Tommy, "No, no, no, no, no, no, no..." one. Its similar to how fog only can generate once during the game on a checkpoint charlie mission and that's if you fail that 4 times IIRC.

I'd love to start if possible on Twitch doing it to see if anyone cares but setting that up is going to be a slog. I have so many things on the go as usual that I haven't even tried out LiveSplit yet but I suspect getting it to overlay on my game is not going to work first try. If I'm not using OBS or the like yet how does it overlay a full screen game? I haven't even beaten vigilante from game start.

Awesome to see someone else finds Vigilante the best thing about Vice City.

Couldn't agree more. I have spent far more time playing Vigilante than any other aspect of the game. Heck, I have

probably spent more time on my Vigilante save files than anything else. This sub-mission absolutely rules! The

car chase's, pile-ups, and explosions can be absolutely epic.

I hadn't played it for quite a while and for fun downloaded it onto my PS4. It's still such a kick.

I only played it previously on PS2.

In my games I own all the property's and I fill all the garages with police vehicles. By far the best ride is the

Cheetah, and 75% of the garages are filled with them. The rest are FBI Washingtons which are easy to get.

I generally use the Cheetah up until I have three stars. Sometimes I stick with it, sometimes I switch to the

Washington. I pretty much always switch to the Washington when I have four stars since it takes considerably

more damage than the Cheetah.

Also in my games, I don't accept the mission unless it starts me off with 3 minutes or more. If it shows

less, I cancel it, then restart it til I get a 3 minute start time.

I have easily gotten over level 12. Not sure what my max level reached is. If you do the above and your

in a Cheetah, Washington, or Rancher, you can use pay n spray, and it's not that hard. After a while, it kinda started to feel

like cheating to me, so I made it a personal rule not too. If I am playing really hardcore, I won't drive through bribes unless

I am chasing a target. Using those guidelines, it is tough to get to level 12 or higher, but I have done it.

Couldn't agree more about the range of the targets shotguns.

Have fun!

This is the first time I've come across someone that also loves it like I do, cool!

I haven't used the FBI Washingtons that much actually, I would if I needed a new vehicle while being in that part of the map. I forgot about the double armor bonus it has. As far as the time rolls when first starting, if its some low roll like 1 min I might restart but if its a low time roll plus a fast criminal car I reset. If I try getting higher time rolls by resetting repeatedly I tend to find it gets stuck on a specific roll due to the randomizer using same pre-sets so I do something really different to jossle the numbers around in the game's memory.

When you say you got over level 12, do you mean just in general at some later point in the game or right from the very beginning of the game? Part of what can make the challenge I wrote about more fun is trying to collect enough $ fast enough at the start for re-sprays since it costs $100. If its a speedrun then getting a cop car and nightstick fast will often result in 2 wanted stars so getting the bribes or a re-spray quick is key. I've once got to Level 10/11 with 4 wanted stars the entire time from the beginning of the game. You can use the SWAT vans to your advantage by quickly getting in the road block SWATs to refill armor. I never understood why the SWAT cops just do nothing when blocking the road.

I detail my plays in the "What did you do today in Vice City" thread. I haven't even begun getting LiveSplit/Wsplit to work well and DxWnd so the Twitch stream dream remains just that for now.

I have only gotten over level 12 when playing far later in the game. Pretty much always once I own all the properties so I can store police vehicles in them.

My current set up on PS4 I have 11 VCPD Cheetah's, 2 FBI Washingtons, and 1 FBI Rancher. I have been too lazy to fill any slots at Sunshine Auto's, so have room for

8 more cars. My PS2 set up has all garages filled.

Getting to level 12 at the beginning of the game does sound challenging. I will have to try it. The part that I'm curious about is the money for pay n spray is a factor, but the

bigger expense to me would be for all rounds for the sub machine gun. Or are you taking out your targets by ramming them? My Vigilante set up has a minimum of 5,000 rounds

for the MP 5.

Impressive getting to level 10-11 with constant four stars at the beginning of the game. Four stars is a lot of fun, and can be quite hard. I think 3 stars is my favorite. 5 stars is impossible.

Suspect on foot! (but wait, no their not)

Part of this speedrun idea is seeing what the best time to buy sub-machine gun ammo would be from the shop, but you have to be nearby with enough time on the clock. I do both ie ramming the criminals. I like to trap the car against a wall and then I exit and pull them out if no sub gun is on me. I also do a lot of pit manoeuvres.

What really becomes a pain at four stars is the speed the cop cars have and then ram you. I spray a bullet or two to get the cop out during driving. 5 stars I may have had at some point but practically it is indeed impossible.

The lights, the soundtrack, the streets; in short, the framework where the story takes place.

The 80's were a great decade and Vice City riproduces it perfectly.

Oh, Ok. So by beginning of the game would be once Ammu-nation is available to you. Or is it available immediately? I can't

remember. Then you use the money from passing Vigilante levels to buy sub-machine gun ammo and use pay-n-spray.

Sounds challenging. Especially since you have to start with a crappy, regular police car. I swear their tires are made of ice.

They take a ton of damage though.

Will try this out and see if I can get to level 13. Thanks for the mini game of the mini game!

Its available immediately. I haven't been successful in getting tons of ammo that early as I either have enough from pick-ups or I don't have time as getting rid of wanted stars or getting more armor is of greater importance. The thing about pay-n-spray is its never done in these early game runs because you can't in the cop car, and also finding a car near it is impossible for some reason, maybe its because I always have 2 or more wanted stars which disables traffic near that zone. Its something I've really noticed on my last 5 plays.

Gave this a few runs over the weekend and it is quite challenging.

I totally had my chance but didn't get it. I started with 3:30 and got a quick take down. The next two were both on motorcycles and easily took them out.

At that point I had at least 7:45 on the clock with over a grand for my efforts. Ran up to ammu-nation and then had 620 rounds for the sub-machine gun.

Took out the next two levels easily, but went up to three stars and my health was down to 42. Then, got in a big pile up with two cop cars and a VCPD

cheetah right in front of pay-n-spray! All I had to do was jack the cheetah and limp into pay-n-spray and I was set. Unfortunately I couldn't risk clearing out

the cops because with 42 health they would of wasted me so I had to risk it and jump straight in the cheetah where I was able to move a little but was busted. Damn.

Gotta find out where they stash the armor on this side of the map.

I've only had back-to-back motorcycles once in 200 attempts that I can remember so its very rare. How did you do the initial takedowns before getting the sub-machine gun?

I first get from the beginning a cop car or I take out one cop to get his nightstick which is very useful, then either get the car from the police station or wait for a cop car to roll up. Then I'll go straight south from the station and needle my way to this spot with a high ledge just below an armor pickup. I hop on the cruiser to then jump over the wall (thankfully its barely possible) to get some cash from a hidden package, and then run to get a sub-machine around the corner near the stair steps. I then return to the parked cop car by jumping down. That's the fastest way to get "setup". I've been trying both the front of the stairs run and the former to see which is fastest.

You can pull criminals out of their vehicle and then hit them with the nightstick quick which has an advantage of not getting wanted stars for some reason.

For initial take-downs I ram their car until it's damaged enough they have to stop and get out. I then get out of my car and shoot them with a shotgun.

I always drive straight to the cop station mid map where there are two cop cars in back. One or both of them is unlocked. You get a shotgun and five rounds

for each new cop car you enter, so it helps a lot if you can get into both.

I play on PS4 and looked up a map of armor locations. Showed a couple in the long alley that runs north to south and parallels the beach. Looked everywhere,

could not find them. I notice the armor is out of stock at Ammu-nation, I wonder if it has to be unlocked before it spawns in the drop locations.

Will definitely be looking up where to get that sub machine gun for my set up.

I swear at the beginning of the game the cops can bust you when your moving at a lot faster speeds than later in the game.

Sometimes both cop cars are locked at that station. When that is the case out of frustration I just toss a grenade at each one to blow them both up. I never thought about entering in both just to get more shotgun rounds. I get so many already from changing cop cars frequently.

There is no armor in the long alley, its near that pool in the center of the map where the stairs lead up (a bit hidden, I just memorized it this Spring after 16 years). You can also get armor at the top of the stairs sort of connected to the back of the pay-and-spray but I get mine from the pool area first.

Cops busting will drive you nuts trying to do this challenge, its horrible. I know all the dangers and it still happens all the time even when being safe. One will just run up from nowhere and before you can react its gg. Its hard to change cop cars when the door is busted off but to ensure you don't get busted from a distance its important to keep it intact. I get it from meters away at times, cheap garbage. If your car is on a mound and not level to the ground, entering it is very risky and you'll get busted often. I've noticed on the PC version that as a cop is attempting to bust me before the outcome, Tommy will say the lines "Ok you got me, relax" or similar but I'll succeed in getting away.

I tried doing the pay-and-spray to get rid of 4 stars and the timer ran out, you can't do it with the cop car switch to normal car routine. FBI cheetahs are very hard to obtain in the midst of the action without a blowup. In a vigilante speedrun its difficult.

Got to level 10 over the weekend, but ran out of time. Had a couple other good shots at it (one game I had two cheetah's) but got busted.

I have always played Vigilante after completing the assets ring and I can definitively confirm it is way easier for the cops to bust you at the beginning.

Biggest difference is playing later in the game the cops never knock you down and bust you. Have had that happen a few times. And of course there is

the ridiculous getting busted from 10 feet away while moving at a good clip BS the beginning has no shortage of.

Did have a hilarious (cheap) bust last weekend playing the later game. Cop was running up to the car, I shot him right when it was changing to the busted screen. When the

camera panned up looking down at my car, you could see the dead cop lying there. No other cops around.

Level 10 is pretty good, took me a bit to get to that. If a cop hits you enough times with the nightstick your chances go up for falling over and then busted. I just had that on my last play.

That last bust reminds me of when I got the bribe as the cop was running and "locked on" to bust me and even though I solidly cleared my wanted level to zero stars I was still busted anyways since my car halted.

I did it!!!

Actually finished level 14 and was wasted shortly after.

Started out with the cop car from the middle of the map, went north where there is an easy armor on the right before the Malibu

Club hairpin corner.  Then went to the building on Prawn Island to get an Uzi. It's on the front porch of the house where you go shoot

people up during Phonm Phenm (sp) mission.

VC Vigilante: You should post a video of one of your better runs. Would like to see it.

If I figure out how, I'll do the same. I enjoyed finishing this challenge, but honestly, I really like the later game set up with all

the cars and guns. Will post a video of that if, like I said, can figure out how.

Happy Hunting!

That was quick! How did the run go like time rolls, wanted level duration, how the hunts went, avoiding shotgun hits, etc.? Were you able to use the pay-n-spray and did you keep using a cop car or did you obtain a FBI Cheetah at some point? For a much tougher challenge, try it on the PS2 version.

I would love to since there have been many crazy things but I haven't tried using VLC or another video recording method, but I also can't get Dxdwn or that program that window's your game to work so a LiveSplit or WSplit timer can be on the left side.

Started with a little over 3 minutes and had it set to where when I got out of the car I was armed with the shotgun. First target was easy. Bashed their car a few times and hit them with the sub machine gun when they got out. Second target

and third targets were similar, but got out and blasted them with a shotgun. Wasn't getting the best time rolls, but they weren't the 40 seconds BS it kicks out sporadically.

Target 4 I got with the sub machine gun. By this point after taking down a target I would cruise by to see if any sub machine guns were left so I could pick them up. Also at this point I had two stars, which is what I

like. Not enough stars to worry about, but enough to keep the cops around in case I needed to jack their car.

Target five I also took down with the sub machine gun, but was out of ammo so cruised by Ammu-nation and could afford around 900 rounds.

During targets 6,7, and 8, took them all out with the sub. Couldn't risk getting out since they are too heavily armed. Went up to three stars at one point, but a bribe was nearby, and knocked it down to

two. Went back up to three stars during target 8, and managed to jack a Cheetah. Also pretty much was out of ammo again. The time rolls were decent, but was nervous because I would be down to about

3 minutes when I would finish a level.

After finishing level 8 I got a good time roll of another 3 plus minutes, but was out of ammo. So I had to chance it and take the long drive to Ammu-nation. I knew that would either make or break this run.

I had over $15,000 so I knew I could buy all the sub ammo I needed. By the time I got back to the targets, I was down to 3 and a half minutes with three cars to take out. The rear car was easy, as always,

and got the next two within a minute. Rolled three more minutes and was set up. Hit Pay n Spray shortly after as the stars were back up to three.

Over the next levels went up to four stars because I kept getting shotgunned by targets and having to kill cops for their cars.

Fun one, definitely had points along the way I thought I was going to get busted but somehow wasn't.

If I figure out how to post a video, will do so, hope you can do the same.

Thanks for taking the time to write out how it unfolded, I was wondering since I haven't been close recently. It was because you were able to jack a FBI cheetah and use pay-n-spray which I may have done only several times since its hard not to get killed or have the cheetah get nearly blown up. Getting those high time rolls was also key in success near the end, I've gotten a lot of the 40 sec ones. Another hazard I've been experiencing lately is my car getting blown up while being too close to another blow-up, I get so mad when you can't exit the car fast enough because the game decides to screw you over!

Update: I did get closer than ever by reaching Level 14 only I had to resort to mild cheats that didn't give me much if any advantage. What was neat about this run was I started with just the cop car and didn't prepare at all, just to get in the action quickly! I didn't even have a sub for the first 4-5 targets/levels. I started getting more sub pickups and at one point had 180 rounds. I even got in a FBI cheetah twice because of a opportunity. I had to use health cheat once and may have been able to survive without it (down to 4), and then once all cop cars de-spawned and I needed one, I got in a cheat tank, blew up a cheetah and cop car, then exited again. I had between 2-6 minutes most of the time but earlier on when I thought I was finished, I completed a level with 8 seconds left. Some epic play was during that time of the cheat tank when I looked back as Tommy was running there was like a dozen cops/criminals running after me! :miranda: I perfectly aimed at a crim with a shotgun from far away and the game didn't register the hits. How he perished was quite unique. I got busted to end it. I realized by playing once more with just the cop car on the north part of the map that its easier up there since spawns occur along a loop which makes intercepts faster and easier. Also more bribes within reach. I feel a tad embarrassed that I didn't notice this til now; I played the north part on PS2 many times and never caught on to a pattern. I always assumed that since they could spawn on prawn island its best I stay south but trials prove otherwise.
