Favorite albums of 2020?

Any genre and suggest how many you want, as long as it’s from 2020.

Bonus points if it’s from indie artist(s)!

I’m really into darksynth/retrowave, so here’s three of my heavy rotations from this year of 2020:

Mirror by Dimitri De Alencar - dark synth, heavy, “Wall Street Hyenas” is fantastic!

Virtuaverse.ost by MBR - another dark synth album that could well be a soundtrack for a cyberpunk game!

Electric Heart by Roxi Drive - a great Retrowave album from a great singer!

I have a ton because I am daily music listener searching new and old bands I never heard before, but I think these are in the top (no order) of my favorite music genre (metal in general):

Great suggestions, specially Paradise Lost!

The kind of synthwave I like the most (the two first albums of the thread) has some influence of rock/metal. I think the founder of the subgenre, Perturbator, used to be himself a metalhead...

Standard Deluxe 59

Did it have to be published in 2020? Because I've bought a few CDs this year, but the music on them was made mostly in the 70's and 80's.

Now I’m curious!

I’ve only bought a handful of albums this year. Folklore by Taylor Swift, Father Of All by Green Day, Heaven and Hell by Ava Max, but Power Up by AC/DC would be my favorite. Being my favorite band, it’s a no brainer. Shot In The Dark was their heavy hitting return song, sounding unapologetically AC/DC and followed up with the likes of Through The Mists Of Time, Witch’s Spell, Systems Down, Money Shot etc. Probably their best album since Back In Black or even just as good as Back In Black.

I know some people can find this generic, but I love this album. They have done a lot of work, and a great way to pay tribute to the late singer.

This one was a difficult one, mainly because there weren't too many stand-out releases this year. Maybe I've just not had my eyes and ears open, and maybe I've been a little distracted. I've done a top 9 because that's how the site I use makes collages so it is what it is.

I know you acknowledged it, but that album was released in 2019. I could never get into 100 Gecs. Not even the remix album had anything I could stomach.

As per the course for things like this, today I discovered an album released in December of 2020 that absolutely would have made my list. It's Brass by Moor Mother and Billy Woods, a strange and subdued hip hop record with some great production and unique delivery. I listened to it all the way through earlier today and I was absolutely hooked. I found it on Bandcamp purely by chance. I could have quite easily let this one go and I wouldn't have known what I was missing.

Someone made an interesting observation about the album cover. Most strikingly it resembles Tame Impalas.

Relaxing and magical.
