When it comes to dumbest protagonists though, it's Claude, he got 4 gangs hostile to him. Yep, 4 f*cking gangs. He was also dumb enough to have Catalina as his girlfriend until she left him for dead.

Smartest Protagonist? Yes.

Smartest character? No.

I believe CJ to be the most successful protagonist of the series and that's saying a lot considering he started from absolute zero. Some protagonists started from Zero financially but at least were experienced criminals. But CJ is at the bottom of the food chain both financially and physically. He is inexperienced and young as well.

I think he was very talented to grow like that throughout the story and played his cards right in most situations. The way he handled Catalina is a prime example. Most people write it off as him being a pussy but I don't think CJ could have gotten what he wanted at that point by playing rough. He got this money and manipulated her ass and dumped her.

But I think there are a lot of smarter characters in the series. So let's just say he is the smartest Protagonist IMO.

Intelligent:

Trevor

Huang

Niko

These guys are probably the smartest. Trevor is an unpredictable psychopath but he's also really good at math, is a skilled pilot, knows the human psych well enough to manipulate and scare people, and can easily read through people's bullsh*t. He's been in the game long enough to know all the tricks of the trade, and runs a successful criminal enterprise pretty much all by himself. Huang may be one of the youngest but that's precisely what puts him at the top of the list. He's somewhat of a prodigy to me, he's a very quick thinker and often goes over people's heads with his sarcastic humor. It's assumed he's also good with numbers considering he's a good drug dealer. He becomes the leader of the Triads which is rather impressive for how young he is. Niko is an experienced criminal from overseas who has military training. He can be very philosophical at times, often questioning the way the world works with his pessimistic point of view, and has a sarcastic wit similar to Huang. He knows how to effectively work in the criminal underworld, which shows when he's explaining to Roman that he'll work for Faustin after killing Vlad. He does have his stupid moments however, the most notable one is that he never catches on to Michelle being an IAA agent until she tells him. Niko and Huang would be higher than Trevor if not for the fact that they're both still new to America. (Huang ranks higher than Niko because he's been to Liberty City before and is more familiar with American culture)

Street Smart:

Tommy

CJ

Michael

Johnny

Vic

These guys all fall in the middle. They all know how the criminal underworld works, and are all capable of leading a gang or organization or running a business. Tommy is the smartest of this bunch. He took over Vice City singlehandedly and continues to run it until at least 1992. CJ is co-leader of one of the biggest gangs in Los Santos, and is capable of owning several businesses across the state (Although Kendl is the one handling all the numbers and paperwork). He took apart the Loco Syndicate and did a lot of impossibly crazy sh*t just to get his brother out of prison. He knows the streets well enough to move out of them and is a big-time music producer by the end of the game. Michael is an experienced crminal like Trevor, except he tends to leave loose ends and his anger issues often lead to him making rash decisions. Johnny was level-headed and capable of leading and keeping The Lost together even in GTA V, but his stupidity shows when he falls back in love with Ashley and succumbs to meth. Vic is the least smartest, mostly because he keeps allowing himself to put up with his crazy family, which eventually gets him killed.

Young & Still Learning:

Luis

Franklin

These two are similar in regards to the fact that they're trying to get out of the ghetto (In Luis' case, he already has) and both need a mentor-figure to guide them to success.

Dumb:

Claude

Toni

Claude followed his heart instead of his brain and almost got killed/sent to prison for it. He has no goal or direction, and does whatever he's told for money. Toni has an intentionally dumb personality. He lives only for Salvatore Leone and doesn't have any purpose or desires, similarly to Claude.

In short, I disagree. I think CJ is a very smart character, but there are others who have proven to be more intelligent throughout the series.

Finally someone who agrees about CJ's behavior with Catalina, why the f*ck would he stand up against an unstable f*ck that could possibly ruin his chances of getting money (since at this point of the story he really needed some to pay The Truth)

I completely agree that Claude and Toni are the least intelligent out of all the protags.

I won't put Trevor very high on my list because he has lotsa moments of retardness.

That's true, he does do a lot of stupid things throughout the game, like kidnapping Madrazo's wife and attempting to steal a nuclear weapon. I think Trevor's heavy use of drugs is what mostly causes his stupidity (but at the same time he explains that it allows him to do the all crazy sh*t that he does). I bet if he wasn't on speed all the time he'd probably be a lot more rational in his decision making.
