Weird low GPU usage in GTA online. Help appreciated.

Hello,

I recently built myself a new computer that I am using primarily for gaming. Things have been going rather smoothly until last night when I decided I wanted to play GTA V with some friends.

I noticed that my FPS wasn't quite what I thought it would be. Granted I don't have the highest end computer, but a fairly decent one none the less. (RTX 2070, Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB 3600 MHZ ram, 850w gold PSU) After switching on the in game overlay for NZXT cam, I noticed that my GPU usage was hovering anywhere between 0-40% roughly, but usually on the lower end. There are even times where it stays at 0% for a long time. I have heard that GTA is a fairly CPU intensive game, but surely something seems off here right? I can't imagine I should be having such low GPU usage in a game such as GTA V. To test just to make sure it was not the high graphics settings, I set everything to low and restarted the game. GPU usage was still very low in the same area as it was before. I noticed a marginal FPS increase, but not what you would expect from switching to low and certainly not what I expect from the specs on low. I went from about 50 - 85 FPS on average, to about 70 -100 fps on average. I reinstalled the drivers for my graphics card but it didn't seem to fix anything.

So far I have tested two other games, Valorant and League of Legends. In Valorant running at max settings 1440p windowed borderless, I get a consistent 144+ FPS with my GPU hovering in the 70%+ usage range. If I use full screen instead with the FPS uncapped, it runs at around 98-99% usage at all times with 300+ FPS. In League of Legends, I also noticed the GPU usage was lower than I would have thought it would be, however, it was on average quite a bit higher than in GTA at around 30-60% usage, and in League I get actually good 144+ frames on windowed borderless. So I assume League is just much easier to run, so the GPU caps off anyway.

So far the only fixes I have tried have been reinstalling the graphics driver, setting the power management mode in the NVIDIA control panel for GTA to "Prefer maximum performance", and messing with the in game settings for GTA with no success.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on here? Is this a known issue in GTA? If anyone has a fix or any suggestions, I would be glad to hear.

Thank you.

Ryzen 5 3600 with 3600Mhz Ram is excellent, the issue here is with GTA V. The game just doesn't want to run high framerates because it is very CPU intensive.

Also, the game won't benefit from having more than 6 CPU cores. Back in 2015, before Ryzen, we all played on quad cores with high clock speeds, and games were only made to use 4 cores. More cores will result in a smoother system but the game's main thread will still be choking.

GTA V prefers high CPU and RAM clock speeds over having a lot of cores.

One setting to keep low is Extended Distance Scaling in Advanced Graphics.

For the normal Graphics, go ahead and set everything high until you get 100% usage on the graphics card.

edit: don't use Very high/Ultra grass. It will render a lot of shadows for the grass and is quite GPU intensive. High only renders the grass itself, not all the shadows, I find that just acceptable.

i consider what i have to be a beast of a rig, and it still chugs on gta occasionally. Namely around the casino if there's a bad angle, but i found turning grass quality down helped me considerably for the rest of the map

Hey man, thanks for the reply.

So, the weird thing is I am already running GTA with all the settings pretty much maxed out but for some reason my gpu is still on 0% usage most of the time, at least according to NZXT cam. Maybe its just a glitch and it is actually on very high usage, but in all other games I use it in it shows the GPU usage as really high. Any idea what could be the issue here?

Thanks, I will give this a try.
