What did R* even achieved by cancelling OpenIV's LC?

There's still many ports of the Liberty City ported by other modders. I see them on youtube all the time, and apparenty there is even multiplayer RP servers on FiveM too. What was the big deal about OpenIV team? I would be pretty suprised if they thought they could discourage people with sending just one mod team a cease & Desist letter.

At the time it happened, I believe T2 and R* were under the impression that OpenIV was being used to let people cheat in online, which was wrong as OpenIV needs ScriptHookV and that won't run in online mode... although it does let you edit some files that are exclusively used in online mode. The fact that the OpenIV team were effectively taking the company's IP and porting it into that same company's game just made things even worse.

Despite the foundation of GTA V model-based modding being mostly sourced from stolen/unlicensed models, companies aren't always going to sit back and watch a high-profile team do it unaddressed. It doesn't matter if you needed legit versions of the game to run that proposed mod, the IP wasn't theirs to port into another game. As a result, T2 and R* made a statement about protecting their IP, no doubt using the already visible presence on many gaming sites to push that message out further. But because modders already didn't care about IP and copyright (and still don't), they just carried on behind the scenes anyway and T2 and R* ultimately proved to be all mouth and no backbone.

Some other developers that support modding don't allow licensed content to be used as mods, (as is the case with some modding sites, I believe Nexus doesn't allow licensed content)... I class that as developer-respect, or at least that's how I see it from a developer's perspective anyway. T2 and R* don't seem to give a crap about other developers and their IP, so they just turn a blind eye... I don't think the word Respect exists in the R* dictionary tbh.

And of course you've got Patreon which makes a profit off stolen content being used by people on their site, and equally don't give a damn about someone's IP, so they'll do anything possible to ensure that "creator" is protected.

Maybe you don't fully understand what one is and what the consequences are if you ignore one. It's a legal document, if you ignore it you can and frequently are prosecuted by the company. It's not designed to discourage you, it's designed to stop you and unless you have a good legal team, a large amount of money to pay for a good legal team, or hide in a country that will protect you, they're not to be taken lightly. Nintendo has a history of issuing them and they tend to get the job done pretty well. The OpenIV team knew that, which is why OpenIV was shut-down until the matter was resolved... it could quite easily have been the end of OpenIV as a mainstream modding tool.

It seems so absurd they were that deaf among their community. GTA is soooo huge and I don't think even just one of their employees didn't knew about a modding tool that is soo widely used and huge, and informed their colleagues about it like "maybe we shouldn't bash a singleplayer modding tool this hard." All it created was a community backlash anyways.

I mean, my initial question wasn't that why openIV prosecuted, it was why only openIV team bited the dust when there's millions of other creators porting assets from GTA SA to GTA V, GTA Vice City to GTA V (et cetera) and this has been happening ever since PC GTA games ever got popular. Why they didn't do that back then and only the OpenIV team was the black sheep among the many other modders that make even the exactly same mod, porting LC to GTA V?

Also I am pretty sure they also intended to discourage modding community too. Like i said, they are still many modders out there making exactly same mod (and a few of them apparently finished with working traffic and peds), what did just nuking one of them prevented?

But you're assuming people at Take 2 care about single-player modding. They're a business with IP to protect, that's their priority. I mean you've seen how bad some of these ports come out, what happens when people start to believe that these poor quality ports are actually something the company has released? Keeping these map ports out of the mainstream helps to prevent that from happening. They don't want potential customers on other platforms (i.e. console) and maybe even shareholders thinking these mods are representative of what the company is actually producing.

OpenIV possibly had to agree to their mod being stopped as part of being allowed to continue existing. Sometimes you have to sacrifice one thing, to be able to keep another. They could have carried on and they could have been stopped completely, effectively killing modding... no map mod is worth that. These other map modders don't care about modding as a whole, they just want their glory at any cost... so they continue to ignore the T2 and R* statement.

It created a community backlash on a platform that they probably don't care that much about. The PC will always be an afterthought because of piracy. I was a developer for a long time and during that time I met many publishers who said "We won't do a PC version because it's just not worth it". The PC community just makes a lot of noise and the only people who care about that noise, are other users on that platform. Look at what PC users are doing to their online services... do you really believe they care about a platform that is doing that?

When you put alarms on your car and locks on your doors, there will still be thieves who will steal your car and break into your house. But companies still have to tell you to put alarms on your cars and locks on your doors, to try and deter thieves. They had to make a statement and stopping OpenIV from doing it was a fairly loud statement. You can't stop everyone, so the trick is to stop the most visible ones, which is what they did.

Had they been like Nintendo, then none of these other mods might exist, Nintendo are pretty ruthless when it comes to their IP, they'll send C&D letters to anyone, no matter how small.
