Standalone GTA Online launching on PS5 in 2021

315 members have voted

  1. 1. What major changes can we expect at launch of PS5/XSX versions and standalone Online in the second half of 2021?

    • Technical improvements, visual upgrades and performance enhancements only
    • Map expansion (Liberty City, North Yankton...)
    • Social Club overhaul
    • Gameplay additions
    • Something else
  2. 2. At what point can we expect GTA Online updates to stop on PS4/X1 versions?

there will be no GTA 6 ever. It’s GTA Online/Online 2/3/4/so on til the world ends

I just hope they don't abandon online on xbox one like they did on 360.

Hate to say it, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that one.

Current gen will get dropped.

Current gen will get dropped.

I originally upgraded from 360 to xbox one for gta online. Not sure I can afford to do that again...

They will sooner or later. The question is, will it matter? Because without a new game this thing is old as hell and the only thing that will bring back the excitement is a time machine set back to 2013. Don't mind that, actually, that was a pretty good year.

Without going through 9 pages to find the answer...which no one may know yet, are PS4 and PS5 players going to be able to play together like you can do with RDRmulti?..or is it PS5 players have the option to play with 4 players and their own enhanced version as well, it seems like that enhanced version might be pretty dead for a while if this is the case?...I am confused.

Or Rockstar will publish SP-only games, while keeping GTA Online updated for years to come as a separate entity :yee:

I very much doubt it. They’re touting exclusive next gen content which most likely means that this new version won’t even be compatible with current gen

Again, how are they going to do that without dedicated servers, or at the very least rework all of the game's code from the ground up since this thing is a mess?

No f*cking way they actually think that Online, as it currently is right now, can be passable as a standalone game, as a next gen game from 2021...

This is f*cking ridiculous.

Maybe that's a long term intention? It's possible this is only a recent decision or plan in the making encouraged by Take Two, and a company worth two billion doesn't operate short term, they have all these fancy 5 year plans etc. We're only a day after announcement but we don't know any explicit details of what their intentions are, and what it could mean for the future.

Red Dead Online already performs a lot better on an upgraded engine, good loading times, no clunky movement etc. Yes they are bugs to fix (not sure if you play RDO or not) but overall it's improved because it's newer. The same could be in the works for a standalone GTAO.

I don't think so. I see current gen support ending like old gen once R* are happy enough players/profit is being made from next gen. Plus it's likely that there'll be aspects of next gen incompatible with current too.

Say for example they do a map expansion. Those with current gen could be watching their next gen friends/crewmates disappear into a void as current gen players can't join them. (Just an example, I know a map expansion is a long shot compared to other aspects that could arrive in new gen - Clothing exclusive to next gen could see players on current gen see their friends show up without their t-shirt on or something too).

Rockstar as a business is IN the business of making money. It has a hugely successful IP so why would it not exploit this.

Because the back lash is going to be epic...I am kind of excited to see exactly how this plays out...and how big of a train wreck will it be.  RDO is pretty bad, but the SP saved it from complete anihilation.

The next "standlone" game cannot possibly get positive reviews.  Can it?  There is no way anyone is going to buy a ps5 for this, in other words, this seems like a bonus for the early adopter. its not like a fence sitter is now a hard buy..especially if its not backwards compatible.  Meaning R* blocks PS5/SeriesX players from doing the obvious...getting a new gen out the gate with ability to play with your nonearly adopting friends...I mean talk about a hard sell, get an enhanced version of a game everyone is still playing in last gen.

In a way, it almost seemed like a gift to 360/ps3 players to get GTAV a game clearly designed for next gen.  This feels like that cheap bottle of wine in a roughed up bag...its a regift...I dont think players are gonna drink it down...without a substantial overhaul...which if that was the case, it would have been right up front...not shiney shiney free free.

It did work from old gen to current though. And grew so much.

I lost a few friends and my crew was destroyed because we split with some upgrading and others not, I don't think R* is too worried by this IMO.

Anyone else now think the journalist from Kotaku or euro gamer Jason something or other right over Tez or Yan.

No disrespect to those guys at all as it’s just their sources giving them info or did in Yans case and who have been keeping us all updated for years now but you get what I’m saying when the journalist said the GTA6 was nowhere near complete etc it was because of this announcement.

Few observations, expansion sounds like North Yankton given it’s already been in GTAV and Iv defo had my head turned in the last few hours by the comments here meaning there will be NO liberty city or vice city. I just can’t see rockstar from what I’m reading here doing that and honestly I reckon it’s the last milking of the cow which just a theory is maybe the reason Dan Houser left a year ago when Take2 told Rockstar they had to do this? Any takers

If its not backwards compatible, like every other game...R* will deserve the entire wrath of players that they are likely to receive.

PS5 will be backward compatible. But as I said, if next gen doesn't let this gen join together to play, I don't think it's a big issue for R* as players on PS4 couldn't play with PS3 friends/crew, nor between X360 and Xone. The assets from next gen won't be compatible with this gen.

Imagine I buy an exclusive new car on next gen and try joining a current gen PS4 player, how would they see that if the files aren't on the PS4. It can't work IMHO.

They did state that updates would be exclusive to next gen

So does this mean no more updates for PS4? I mean it kinda makes sense because of COVID and getting us all to still play this version if that is the case by offering the incentive of the £1m per month??

This is honestly sad news for Grand Theft Auto. GTA Online already felt unbalanced at launch and need an overhaul, but now they’re adding even more content on top of that. What can they possibly add now? Spaceships and rocket suits? The next Grand Theft Auto will take much longer to come out, and when it does it will have half the content locked behind a paywall.

At the very least, if the usual summer DLC is halted, we'll get a Christmas one I feel. It's proven too profitable to not do one that time of year.

But I feel we'll get a summer one here too as it'll surely help keep players playing until next gen comes. If they don't add stuff with The Last of Us and Cyberpunk due this year, they could lose players easier than hoped as those new games arrive if there's nothing here until next year.

Gaming industry is completely different than in 2013.  The game has to be backwards compatible otherwise people are going to rage.  If its backwards compatible, what is the incentive to actually play on PS5.  An enhanced version has been available since 2015.

So let me get this straight, my 2014 PC running a 2015 game which has sat dusty due to modders will be fine...updates ad infintum...my console account requires a new console to be updated even though I can literally play it on the new console through backward compatibility...um, thats literal b.s.

Again, we already know this. But this dedication to an old and barely functioning game only slows progress to the next game.

How long is this port gonna last? 3, 5 years? I thought gta6 was a 2023 game. Now it looks like it might not even be that.

I don't see it pushing GTA 6 further back, it's only filling the gap between now and when it releases and could be a testing bed for other things. GTA 6 could still get an announcement this year or next year.

I haven't got a clue as to R*'s full plans of course, but it's possible we can just pop in our PS4 copies and play, I haven't paid enough attention to that, though it does seem as though R* are keen to get players to buy again in some fashion if they don't get the free copy when it's up.

I just mean that PS4 and Xone players won't be playing with PS5/new Xbox players is all as there'll be exclusive content for next gen that won't be compatible with this gen.

Likewise. The company can always grow too to allow more to work on either this re-release or the new game/s.

I love how people are acting like this is horrible.

We now have a separate game for Online (And is going to be revamped), and all the people wanting something else will still get it eventually.

Well, I guess it's completely official. There's now an in-game splash screen advert on the PS4. I really wonder if PS4 updates are just over. I wouldn't be surprised. Userbase numbers and microtransaction sales haven't dropped in this drought of updates so there's no real reason to update the game again. I personally don't see a reason to get on for a million a month for 12ish months. I can make 12 million in 2-3 days if I really wanted it. It's a real shame.

Because this feels like a kick in the nuts from Rockstar. We have people who were longtime supporters of Rockstar ever since their first games on this forum. Back in the day Rockstar was a great developer that produced engaging innovative games. They actually deserved the respect that they got. Now, they've resorted to microtransactions and re-releasing the same game across multiple console generations. That's just straight up money gouging, and a lot of the once Rockstar faithful have now lost all trust in them. Just look at the next gen GTA V trailers on Youtube, and you'll see that they have more dislikes than likes. Not only that, but the trailer itself is just a copy-paste compilation of past trailers. That's just lazy. Even if GTA VI is released on the rumored schedule, it might be too late to earn back the trust of those who jumped ship.

The Rockstar of today is not the Rockstar of yesteryear.

So if you own the game digitally on xbox one and buy a series x, isn't the game supposed to just move over to the new system?

I've seen some folk read this part: "with more new updates including additional GTA Online content exclusive to the new consoles and PC", and assume that it means 'this is R* preparing to phase out PS4/XB1', like how PS3/360 GTAO updates stopped a year after the current-gen re-release.

Thing is, though, R* had a specific reason for phasing out last-gen GTAO (from this Q&A article):

"[...] we always knew there might be a point where we would reach the technical capacity of what the older generation of consoles can handle as each downloadable update requires additional memory both for assets and for additional scripting.  We have continued to optimize the entire game over time in order to squeeze as much memory as we possibly could out of the last-generation hardware and at some point, continuing to add content for those systems could cause the risk of instability to the game overall."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's not an issue current-gen consoles have to worry about any time soon, so there's not the same need to phase out older hardware versions like there was with last-gen GTAO - I feel people are trying to make this announcement fit a pattern (re-release a year after the new console launches, previous-gen updates end a year after that), like R* somehow has to follow the same sequence as last time, rather than looking at the specifics of why last-gen GTAO got left behind.

Instead, I reckon it's talking more about bonus content, like how the current-gen version got the Dukes/Stallion/Blista Compact/etc. - exclusive vehicles, weapons, that sort of thing. Not sure if that also means extra activities as well (like the murder mystery and stock car races), but that's what I think it's getting at, rather than implying that they're winding down updates for current-gen.
