Standalone GTA Online Launching on PS5 in 2021

Standalone GTA Online launching on PS5 in 2021

229 members have voted

  1. 1. What major changes can we expect at launch of PS5/XSX versions and standalone Online in the second half of 2021?

    • Technical improvements, visual upgrades and performance enhancements only
    • Map expansion (Liberty City, North Yankton...)
    • Social Club overhaul
    • Gameplay additions
    • Something else
  2. 2. At what point can we expect GTA Online updates to stop on PS4/X1 versions?

When they say its free for 3 months, do they mean that we can claim it for free at any point within 3 months? Or do they mean it is free for 3 months, and you will be charged after?

I would assume you could claim it for free during those three months. Of course, it won't surprise me if they try to charge some kind of monthly subscription fee once those three months are up.

That would be the dumbest thing, I know I said I was looking forward to see what they're going to do with it, but if it's this, they can keep it, it's unnecessary and just stupid.

I also think they'll finally kill it if they've done it that way, people will buy cash cards but I doubt they'll buy them and also buy a sub to a 7 year old game.

Only for the PS5 players, Xbox folk will be charged again to play a game that really should just be backward compatible. And IMHO, as it's only free for the first 3 months, the majority of PS5 players will have to pay as most players won't be buying a new gen console straight away as it'll too expensive for a while too.

Pretty sure Microsoft has said all xbox one games will be playable on Series X. I doubt Microsoft will let Rockstar charge again for people who buy a series x and digitally own GTA V on Xbox one already.

Pretty sure this (and RDR2/O) won't be backward compatible. Almost certain given they're looking to fully re-release the game again and it's only a 3 month promo for the early bird PS5 players. Everyone else will have to pay again to continue.

Why else would they say it's free for the first 3 months for PS5 players if it was able to be played for free anyway through backward compatibility.?

Unless they're doing this...

...that'd be pretty tragic if they went to a monthly subscription, lol. But yeah, it makes no sense to make this 'free for 3 months' offer if there is no plans to fully re-release and sell this again.

Yeah, I mean it's not the most likely that I'd buy this game a third time for another console that I don't plan to buy any time soon, but if it goes to a monthly subscription? Forget it, to hell with GTAO. I don't even like paying for ps plus so i certainly wouldn't pay another fee for an already ancient but technology standards game.

I'm still on the fence over this re-release TBH. I'm open minded for now, I expect little but will keep up to days with any future news just in case things prove better than that trailer eluded to with how it showed nothing new.

On one hand, I probably would by it for story mode alone as I like my GTA story modes and if we get the others and both RDR games, to have them all on one console for ease of access would be handy. That's where my heart truly lies with R*, they make great games when they want to or are allowed, lol. If they add a few bits to story mode, that would be cool. (More newer cars spawning, nee collectibles etc).

On the other hand though, we know how R* do with online and how T2 are so keen to monitise these games now like they do too, I don't like the idea of supporting such tackiness really, especially after the genuine joke that has been the ultra tacky RDRO since release there. (It's like they're not even trying to capture the lightning in a bottle like GTA has).

But if it went to a standalone online and became a subscription based thing, f*ck that. Even the potential to do public only crap in a custom lobby through a subscription service just wouldn't be enough. It'd have to have a huge map expansion like a fully fledged Liberty City and/or Vice City for me to consider even looking into a subscription. And even if so, I'd only play for the 3 free months just to have a good look around at the updated map(s) and that'd be me moving on and finally pushed away from online like the fat cat Strauss so clearly wants.

(Though must add, I'm not convinced map expansions will happen here. Maybe Mexico for RDR2/O could, but that game has too many issues to list why I just don't care about that online enough).

Yeah I'll still keep up to date with what's going on and what they add as far updates and game content. I might be more open to going for it if they add a Midnight Club style update with a boat load of customizable cars and equitable garage space, or even just opening another 100 garage spaces per character. But that would all depend on how expensive a ps5 is and how many PlayStation friends make the move as well, which right now only one of them has a favorable view of it.

I agree, GTA always had a good story line and I wouldn't mind if they expanded it a little like maybe some extra side missions and like you said some of the recent update vehicles driving around. One thing I'd hope they'd tweak is the car crash damage modelling. GTA IV had good deformation but V did away with it for the most part and reduced it even more when the game to ps4. I know they said first person view made roof damage incompatible but I would think they could've used the crouching animation when the roof caved in or just blocked first person view altogether when your car was too damaged.

Yeah I tried RDRO as well after about three groups of PlayStation said I should get it. Only one of those groups was still playing when I got the game and we only played a handful of times lol. I had one friend that I played it with often but she disappeared so I'm just like well that wasn't the best way I've spent a $50 gift card. The story was good though but it's online was a swing and a miss. The gold required buy ins were a big turn off for me and the lack of a private lobby option or even just the "solo public session" were bigger turn offs for me. Funny how they managed to fix the solo lobby exploit, while still using peer to peer servers, but can't fix disappearing ammo bugs or the ever prevalent God mode glitches.

Yeah I certainly agree. I couldn't justify paying a subscription for this game, even with an expanded map, extensive garage space and an added interior trim color for all vehicles, on top of having a ps plus subscription to pay. A subscription fee would end this franchise for me if it became primarily online centric.

I'd be stunned if either game had anything substantial added to their maps.

Just glad they can not pull this BS on PC because to me it sounds like a graphics update and whatever dlc they were going to release anyway, but on the down side is we have the hacker scum. I have purchased this game 3 times, never again.

I am guessing this will be basicly bringing up the graphics up to pc ultra levels at 4k 60fps, hopefully by then rstar will have sorted out the modder issue on pc and we can have cross platform support.

Okay here me out for a second, what if they were never planning to release the Mile High Club or make it when the game came out maybe they wanted to wait like a couple of years once everybody had like millions of dollars then release the building on Next Gen consoles and make it a ridiculous price like billions maybe millions a building that we can own.

I think it will be free for PS5 players for three months then after that you will have to pay for the game.

I think:

  • No cross gen play - so you won't be able to play the PS5 version with someone on PS4
  • If you use PS4 disk in a PS5 you get the PS4 version of the game and online, thus able to play with PS4 players
  • PS4 version will get sunset with no more updates just like PS3 did
  • PS5 version will get the upgraded graphics and future DLC.

Same goes for xbox and its generations.

The question of it going subscription - hmm, can they even do that ? Do Sony/MS allow games to be under PSPlus/Xbox sub but then also charge a subscription of their own? Are there any games that do this currently? Or are there games you don't need PSPlus/Xbox sub to play, but are under a separate subscription from the publisher ?

The sharkcard model has worked well for them thus far, they'd need good justification to change that I think.

Elder Scrolls Online has a monthly subscription option on PlayStation that's recurring each month. It's taken from your PlayStation wallet and advises it's a recurring transaction as long as funds are available so it's certainly possible they could do that with GTA Online under a free game banner, wouldn't support it myself but many I suspect would!

That would likely violate Microsoft's terms of use for xbox publishers which means R☆ could face a lawsuit.

In this article microsoft clearly states all xbox one games will be playable on series x.

"The Xbox team is so committed to the concept of compatibility and cross generation play, that not only do your games move forward with you, but so do your Xbox One accessories, your game saves, and progression. In fact, your entire gaming legacy moves forward with you to the next generation."

Easy to get around, IMHO. Doesn't sound like a guarantee but more their hopes going forward. Sales jargon, lol.

R* could allow backwards compatible and let any that use their current version on the new Xbox but it only acts like a current gen version and you can only join current gen or next gen players that don't have the newer remaster of the game while those that buy the remastered version can play only with those on the same remastered game. Basically making the new Xbox act like the current one really.

We'll see of course, but it makes zero sense to say 'free for 3 months' if there is no plans to charge for the new remaster at all, otherwise they'd have just said free for all on next gen.

I'm betting on Xbox players having to pay as R* are looking to resell it as a standalone game, not update it free for next gen. And a company like R* that has made as much money as they have can easily just pay off anyone if needed to bypass what is essentially a promise from Microsoft. R* might be one of the companies that won't sign off on a free next gen update to fit backward compatibility. If so, that's on Microsoft for making a promise to their customers without checking in on R*'s plans, lol.

I would think that the game is available on current gen would mean the next gen version doesn't need to be backward compatible, therefore there is no issue.

Microsoft has said you can play xbox one games on series X so xbox one players will be able to play their existing xbox one  gta v/online on series x especially if digital.

Yep, existing games.

But GTA is getting a remastered re-release which will be sold as a new game, lol. If you think you'll be getting all the next gen content by using this gen's copy, you're gonna be disappointed big time.

As greedy as take 2 is and the fact that they're already marketing gta v as a next gen re-re-release tells me that most likely they're gonna try to triple dip into people's wallets on the premise of it being "enhanced and expanded". It's more likely that they move online to a subscription system than that they'll let you use your existing disc and still get whatever "enhancements" they plan on making.

Yes but separate instances, just like Xbox 360 owners couldn't play with Xbox One owners.

When the next gen version comes out they will add two instances, one for PS5 the other for Xbox Series X. If you buy the re-re-released game for those platforms, you'll play in those instances.

If you stick with the Xbox One version of the game (regardless of if you run on Xbox One or Series X) you'll continue to play in the Xbox One instance of the game.

Next gen instances will get upgrades and new stuff, current gen will at some point stop getting updates.

True, but the re-re-remastered GTA V doesn't exist yet, lol. Plus online is to become a fully standalone release too.

Anyway, there's no point going around in circles on this topic to be fair. R*'s info is a bit vague but we'll see what they do. I personally feel they'll release the new remaster and look to sell it on both consoles as standalone titles (aside the 3 month promo on PS5). But we'll see.

Just makes no sense to say it'll be free for 3 months if they don't plan to charge for it outside of that promo.

Guys come on, i know you dont want it to happen (and neither does anybody else) but its just painfully obvious that yes, you will have to buy the game again to be able to play the re-re-mastered version, stop trying to convince yourself otherwise, you are only setting yourself up for disappointment, Microsoft doesnt have sh*t to say to the likes of R*/T2, if those companies feel like ms/xbox could be an issue, the xbox release will be delayed.

Also as much as i hate to admit it i actually wouldn't even be remotely surprised if it does become a subscription service, because if they do that profits go x10 even if they'd remove shark cards, and screw long term goals, this re-re-release is just about squeezing the last bucks out of the title, they dont care that people will stop their subscription after 6/12 months, they just want to rake in all that potential cash while they have a last chance. Oh and uh, "in before" all of this actually goes down and its all just so they can release GTA6 as a online-only & subscription-only game 2-3 years later.

If the standard "Just GTA Online" is a subscription, I'd legitimately be curious how many people wind up playing it over purchashing the XBX/PS5 version of the game

Perhaps this might be of some interest, my secondary dummy account received the "ps plus" $1,000,000 monthly bonus despite not having a ps plus subscription. I guess as long as one account has it, the bonus applies to the others that are listed on the system. Or it was a fluke.

I think @ten-a-penny was wondering about this?

Yap, this is what I was talking about. I can't pay for PSPlus even if I wanted to thanks to the lockdown so I can't login. Maybe if someone here who can play online can login to my account every once in a while can test it out, see if my account will receive the stuff.

I'm open to logging in on your behalf if you'd like. I saw the "your ps plus bonus cash has been deposited" splash screen when I played my secondary account last night so I don't think it's a fluke but I wouldn't totally rule it out considering how broken this game is. If you can't find anyone else to try it for you, the offers there from me.
