Standalone GTA Online launching on PS5 in 2021

315 members have voted

  1. 1. What major changes can we expect at launch of PS5/XSX versions and standalone Online in the second half of 2021?

    • Technical improvements, visual upgrades and performance enhancements only
    • Map expansion (Liberty City, North Yankton...)
    • Social Club overhaul
    • Gameplay additions
    • Something else
  2. 2. At what point can we expect GTA Online updates to stop on PS4/X1 versions?

I am seriously more invested in the forum than I am the actual game at this point.

Is it actually confirmed that players are going to be able to transfer progress...RDO console player were not able to transfer progress to PC due to it being "a completely different game."  The article I saw says nothing about character transfers...I think R* didnt allow transfers on RDO due to consoles using glitches but mod menus were introduced almost immediately on pc as expected, so I am probably wrong...my point is I would not assume transfers are guaranteed unless they specifically announce it.

It would be really weird to reset it all and start again from the scratch and grind back the same progress and experience all the same stuff again you just did in the last 7 years... I already spent several years to make it from rags to riches in Los Santos and while I sure would like to experience it again, I would like to do it in a different city with different characters and missions (You know, a new GTA

Unless of course this is R*s plan to attract new players, since GTA:O is not exactly a "rookie friendly" game these days...

No f*cking way they actually think that Online, as it currently is right now, can be passable as a standalone game, as a next gen game from 2021...

Lol, how old are you?

I like GTAO, but I think I'm about done with Los Santos. Feels like I've seen every inch of GTA V's map, and the wonder and exploration are over. I don't think they'll do a map expansion, but for me that's by far the most interesting thing they could add.

I've been bored of it for a while. Hoping for San Fierro & Las Venturas expansions.

same here.

no game mode, no new mission, no new vehicles could beat the boredom of the 7 year old map...

Gotta say, R* is looking pretttyyyy sh*tty right now. I don't give a damn about Gta 6, this is just a sh*tty thing to do. This console gets new stuff and free money while the others are thrown to the corner.

I would bet that transfers if they exist will be limited.  You will probably be able to transfer most your business properties.  A handful of cars and pegasus vehicles.  There is a very strong chance that the amount of money they allow to transfer would be restricted.  I mean in RDO...pc people lost an entire year of progress which for some was a lot of time.

I think standalone gta is the base for a new continuous online world. I think they will add new areas/citys to this. When they do I think they will come with paid story mode. The online portion will remain available to play regardless. IMO

I've seen some folk read this part: "with more new updates including additional GTA Online content exclusive to the new consoles and PC", and assume that it means 'this is R* preparing to phase out PS4/XB1', like how PS3/360 GTAO updates stopped a year after the current-gen re-release.

Thing is, though, R* had a specific reason for phasing out last-gen GTAO (from this Q&A article):

"[...] we always knew there might be a point where we would reach the technical capacity of what the older generation of consoles can handle as each downloadable update requires additional memory both for assets and for additional scripting.  We have continued to optimize the entire game over time in order to squeeze as much memory as we possibly could out of the last-generation hardware and at some point, continuing to add content for those systems could cause the risk of instability to the game overall."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's not an issue current-gen consoles have to worry about any time soon, so there's not the same need to phase out older hardware versions like there was with last-gen GTAO - I feel people are trying to make this announcement fit a pattern (re-release a year after the new console launches, previous-gen updates end a year after that), like R* somehow has to follow the same sequence as last time, rather than looking at the specifics of why last-gen GTAO got left behind.

Instead, I reckon it's talking more about bonus content, like how the current-gen version got the Dukes/Stallion/Blista Compact/etc. - exclusive vehicles, weapons, that sort of thing. Not sure if that also means extra activities as well (like the murder mystery and stock car races), but that's what I think it's getting at, rather than implying that they're winding down updates for current-gen.

Good points. I can't imagine R* even considering dropping this gen until they have the stats to show them that next gen is far more widely used. The majority of players (certainly the younger players, kids, lol) likely won't be able to afford the next gen consoles until the pricing and bundles start to be more reasonable. It'll only be the more hardcore/well off gamers moving over to start and R* cutting support too early on this gen would leave money on the table from their beloved shark cards which we know is too key to it all unfortunately. :)

Unless this remaster is a massive engine overhaul that will bring features from the modern RAGE similar to RDR 2. Thing is, I don't believe it for a minute. And people are skeptical because there's no much trust in R* left here. Speaking of technical limitations, XB1/PS4 versions are barely handling 20 fps now with drops to 15 in some cases. And what is even more interesting, is the matter of PC remastered version.

The problem is that you are willing pay for the same 2013 game for the third time, to get some new exclusive content(which I bet won't amount to more than a new cars, guns and new game modes that aren't worth the pricetag) and fancier graphics.

I'm willing to bet that they won't rework the game's coding to support dedicated servers, won't fix day-one glitches(to the update they were introduced) like the Titan sale glitch, the Orbital canon glitch, the random disconnects and session splits...

Hell, the Lampadati Casco still has it's tailight permanently on all the time since the car got introduced in 2015, the big is caused by nothing but a simple typo, and I'm willing to bet that they won't even look at this.

So yeah, there are a lot of problems with buying the same outdated game knowing the old problems will persist.

On top of all of that, it's the same tired game map, same tired soundtracks(I wouldn't expect more than a extra radio station at the re release), same tired cars that spawns in traffic, same tired guns, same OP Mk2 roaming the skies pestering everyone...

To be fair though, I was always hoping that R* would re-release RDR and GTA IV on PS4 and I'd of bought those again, and I want all their catalog available on PS5 too.

I've bought the 3d games many times and would again if they go to PS5 so knowing GTA V is going to be there with some enhancements is all good for me.

Granted, I don't give two sh*ts what they do with online though. I long gave up caring about it after how they forced the unbalanced public only, butchered the arena so it all but cannot be completed, and more. And after the bullsh*t that is RDR online with it not offering lobby choices and other freedoms that even GTA:O does, I was long decided that once GTA:O dies, I'm out and going back to story mode games only. I made peace with it, hence not being as bitter over this as others, and I'll only buy GTA VI if it proves to have a deep story mode like the rest of the franchise has had over the years.

I'm going to be starting a fresh account this weekend where I play the PS3 and PS4 story mode games I love and have an account with no online progress attached at all for when I move onto PS5, which will become my new main once my last hurrah has passed here, lol. (Might seem daft to some, but hey-ho). Although as this account has 130m and online is gonna be free, I will have a look see, but this is a spell I long anticipated and where I start to get off the online train and return to my beloved single player games only.

Gonna try The Last of Us properly too and buy the sequel as I have read it has no plans to be an online game. I can support that for sure. I'll only buy a R* game if it has single player and if by chance they shorten or butcher VI's story mode and not offer something like we grew up with of old, that'll be where me and R* games split for good.

No regrets though, I met too many good gamers on here and the memories of the good will always remain, and the times with my son too are truly memorable, but it's time to return to my old ways and just game less in general while having all my old favourite games' story modes to entertain but also find a new hobby. :)

And I still can't drive the Willard faction non lowrider over a curb without it coming to a screeching halt or flipping. The irony of a car with stock suspension not being able to go over a curb while it's slammed to the ground counterpart clears the same curb just fine.

still stick with what's been my theory for years, now: they'll drop support for current GTAO some time between the first teasers for GTA VI single-player, and the reveal of 'new GTAO' (which won't have character transfers from current GTAO, or anything like that - new character models, GTA VI map, and probably just some cash XP bonuses for being a returning player, at best), and probably not before. The last thing R* wants is for players to stick with current GTAO instead of buying GTA VI, but they also need to sustain current GTAO long enough so that the gap between 'GTAO 1.0 updates ending' and 'GTAO 2.0 launching' is just the right length so that players, hungry for new GTAO content, will want to jump ship.

Also, even working under the assumption that R* will stick to a similar pattern as last time, even if they don't need to drop PS4/XB1 for technical reasons like they did 360/PS3, then that means that the phase-out will happen in late 2022 (because PS4/XB1 GTAO launched in 2014, with 360/PS3 getting dropped a year later in 2015). If GTA VI doesn't arrive until 2023, that's still just a year later (at which point, it'll be a full decade since GTA V), which isn't that much of a gap. And since (again) I reckon they'll want to leave a gap between all updates ending and GTA VI launching, and considering the current update schedule would probably only leave room for one next-gen-only update between a late-2022 end to this-gen GTAO, and GTA VI in 2023, then ...what's the point exactly?

The only scenarios where dropping this generation to focus on PS5/XSX makes even some sense would be (IMO): they're dropping PS4/XB1 shortly after the next-gen launch, which is ...foolish (because it's arguable how many people will have jumped over by then - they might wind up leaving a whole bunch of players behind that way, and thus leaving money on the proverbial table) - or (more plausibly), because GTA VI is going to be years away even after 2021 or 2022, and so updates will still be coming out, but at a point where the PS4/XB1 userbase is so small that R* can afford to phase that generation out.

That's exactly what it is - free for 3 months as a special offer, then paid from then on (presumably for cheaper than buying the full 'V + Online' package).

...and only for PS5 players - unless they announce a similar offer nearer the time for Xbox Series X, Xbox players will have to pay for the upgrade from Day 1 (#xboned, once again... :sigh:).

There is no way they will make PC players pay extra for standalone online when the "enhanced" stuff that will come to consoles has probably been on PC for years.

I don't see a single point anywhere in the universe why a PC player would buy that sh*t again. If they make it so whoever has GTA 5 now will get the standalone then fine but if they stop supporting the online for PC and offer standalone for some kind of subscription or pay absurd amount of money for online that we know it's gonna DIE so quick on PC it's not even funny. People will just simply switch to RP servers or they will stop playing it.

But hey, maybe that's their plan? Kill the online so everybody will want to switch to GTA online(2?) as soon as it comes out but they want to make a few decent bucks on the current online until they can?
