Gas?

Recommended Posts

I think it's one of those features that really depends on how it's implemented. It could end up feeling like a tedious chore that makes exploration feel less free and fun. Or fuel could be so plentiful and run out so slowly that the feature just feels pointless. Or it could work just fine.

If gas were to become a thing I'd like to see it handled similarly to how food works. The more we crash our cars the more internal damage they start to suffer. Top speed decreases, transmission starts to slip, etc. Getting gas would "heal" those issues but we'd still need to go to a Pay & Spray/Customs shop to get cosmetic damage fixed.

Personally, I don't see it ever being implemented in a way that feels like a massive game changer, though.

(Deep breath) Okay, I can do this. I'm not a teenager like I was last time.

There are only two ways I can see this being implemented. Either it takes so long to run out that it's basically a pointless feature, or it takes so little time to run out that it constantly interrupts your fun with a pointless chore.

Either way, what's fun about this? Yeah, yeah, I get that it would "Add to the immersion", but so would having to spend several in game hours filling out your virtual taxes. I mean, why not add in your 5th grade math homework while you're at it?

I didn't think it was a good idea when it was suggested for GTA V about... holy sh*t like 8-10 years ago on this very forum, and time hasn't really made me warm up to the idea. It would be so annoying having to keep stopping your adventures of fun and wonderment across wherever this game will be set to sit there and watch a gas filling animation for several minutes. I still don't get what's so enthralling about it. And running out of gas during a police chase? That sounds frustrating, not fun. How many people enjoy weapon durability in games? I bet I could count them on one hand.

It still sounds like a pointless chore that would be more of a hindrance to GTA's madcap fun than a boon.

Thanks for the nostalgic flashbacks though, for anyone interested in a time capsule of me now versus me back then, I'm gonna leave this thread.

As I said, add battery cars just to ridicule them and have to quickcharge them every few minutes. Real cars are not gonna out of fuel in real life unless the driver is a total fool.

It depends on how its implemented but I can imagine it working well enough. How the amount of "total fuel" the vehicle you have could depend on certain requirements such as the type of vehicles themselves, their age, quality (showroom standard vs rusted scrap left outside in the countryside for decades), the location where the vehicle spawned (rich or poor areas) ect.

The two questions that would make or break it would be 1) how long until I need to refuel? Too quick and it risks making the game less fun though I can't really see that happening unless you are forcing yourself to use the same vehicle for prolonged periods of time, too long and whats the point unless you are roleplaying.

The other one would be 2) how much will we have to pay to refuel if we do?  Fuelling a car isn't too bad but what about tanks, ships and commercial jets? Not too bad if its  cheap enough but if it costs a fortune then that could be damaging to the amount of fun the player could have. If I can't afford to fuel my plane than i'm forced to either keep stealing NPC planes or start grinding missions until I can afford to put some fuel in my vehicle.

I remember how dying in GTA V was costing me $5000 a death, I hated that even though I could easily afford the losses. But it put me off doing some things and even (I played offline at the time) made me restart the game when I saw the wasted screen. Since I couldn't do the stock markets I ended up forcing myself to do taxi runs to try and earn money to get the last properties until I gave up and just stopped playing altogether.

So, I just thought of something. I actually have played a game with a fuel mechanic in it. Mad Max on the PS4.

What did I think of it? Well, it didn't really piss me off or anything, but it kind of made me feel the same way a loading screen does, you know? Just like "Ughhhhhhhhh I gotta wait for this meter to fill up again and I can't even fire up an emulator or an RCT game on my PC while I'm doing it because I still have to look out for bandits. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay."

Here's what I definitely never thought every time I filled up my car. "Oh my god, this makes the game feel so much more immersive and amazing.". Didn't happen once. It was just another resource to manage, another meter to keep filled. Never really added that much to the excitement or the immersion, and definitely didn't make the game more fun.

I can't really think of how standing still and waiting for a gas meter to fill will improve a GTA game in any way. Because that's what you'll be doing most of the time. You might run out of gas in 1 out of every thousand police chases and it might theoretically be exciting rather than "Oh my god this is frustrating as f*ck, why did they put this stupid sh*t in the game", but let's be real, even if you do sometimes get that occasional excitement, the other 95% of your encounters with this mechanic are going to be "Oh good, I get to stand still and wait for a meter to fill up again. How exciting.". That's definitely my experience with that mechanic in mad max.

No thanks, there are games that do this and it sucks.

There are ways to incorporate gas that aren't just 'your car consumes fuel and you run out constantly'. For instance, say you damage your undercarriage and puncture your vehicle's fuel tank and there's a set amount of gas in there and once it runs out, your vehicle dies. That would make sense and add to the idea of avoiding vehicle damage.

Cars in GTA are, and have always been, very disposable. We only got the opportunity to buy cars by the time GTA V come. In none of the GTA games you are able to drive one of your stored cars to any mission spot and keep it until the mission is over to be able to go and store it in the garage again - this is of course not true for the vehicle rewards in the 3d universe and the vehicles that are always parked in front of your safehouse, but this is irrelevant to my point. You can steal any vehicle you find on the streets and drive it to your garage. If you are not near your vehicle and don't store it in a garage, there is a chance it will disappear by the time you get back.

My point is simple: In GTA there is no such concept as a personal vehicle. Gas makes no sense in a game where personal vehicles are not a thing. It would just be a stupid and pointless feature. It's not like it would add anything to the gameplay except for frustration, since you are almost never attached to your vehicle and you can at any moment replace it. And if you can't readily replace your vehicle, it means that this feature hit at the most inconvenient moment, making it annoying. It's as simple as that.

I think the way it apparently works in V is fine which is: you've got enough gas to get you wherever you need to go, until the gas tank is punctured, which is when the amount of fuel you've got becomes a quantifiable amount instead of a vague whatever

I've been pondering this a long time now and would be in favor of the feature -- if done right, that is.

I'd sure would want to try it.

I'd recommend giving mad max a go if you want a hypothetical idea of how a fuel feature would be implemented. Spoiler alert: Even though it's done well in that game, it doesn't actually add a lot of immersion or amazement to it. Even when you run out of gas, all you have to do is beat up or otherwise kill the people chasing you. Most of your run ins with the mechanic will be "Oh, I have to wait for the meter to fill up again". Keeping in mind that it's a post apocalyptic setting with an excuse of adding to the survivalist aspect. GTA doesn't even have that. It's meant to be a madcap escapist mayhem simulator that happens to have good stories and extremely well realized settings.

Its been partially implemented in i think it was san andreas, but not 100% sure, one of the 3d universe games had functions for it though, i bet they axed it because stopping for gas is no fun, have you ever done this in the few games that offered it? easier to just take a new car instead.
If you really want this feature im sure somebody will make a mod for it, they've been made for all other gta games too.

would be pretty epic.

imagine running out of gas in the middle of a vast desert, and you run across the empty map for about 20 minutes real time and you finally spot a new vehicle and steal it, only to have the gas meter pointing towards the letter E

pretty f*cking immersive if you ask me

Wow, that sounds... really tedious. Don't see how that would make the game more fun.
