Red Dead Redemption 2 turns two years old this year and it got me thinking about when we could expect the next Red Dead game (RDR3). I made this topic for fellow passionate Red Dead fans to share what they would like to see in the next Red Dead game and make predictions on when the game will be announced.

I'd love for RDR3 to go back further in time and explore the golden days of the old west, I think this period would be very interesting.

Cowboys And Indians Paintings | Fine Art America

As for the announcement, RDR2 took 8 years so I would definitely expect it to come to PS5.

What would you like to see in the next Red Dead game?

I personally see RDR3 going back in the years before RDR2. Either way, I have no idea what to expect; and, that is exciting. However, I would like the map in RDR3 to include all of RDR1's and RDR2's map.

But, yeah, I don't know what to expect for RDR3. I'm sure the cards are on the table.

This is of course a loooong way ahead but still fun to share som ideas. And even before RDR2 was released I started thinking about where they should go next.

First of all the characters. I love both John Marston and Arthur Morgan as protoganist. They are shared number 1 of all time in my opinion regarding video game characters. Their story is so interesting and well written that I doubt its possible to do it better in a 3rd game. But Rockstar has proven me wrong with RDR2 so never say never!

I also liked the rest of van der Linde gang. Some more that others of course but you can't make that many characters and they all be as much likeable. They all felt like a (weird) family to Arthur!

But with that said I think its time to leave the beloved gang in the next settlement in the RDR series. Their story has more or less been told. Either by playing trough the story or listening to stories from ohter gang members around the campfire. I would love to encounter some of the characters like Dutch and Hosea in their heydays but as a protoganist I would like a new one with no connections to the van der Linde gang. Maybe an real outlaw this time? With a smaller gang/posse robbing, killing and stealing as a way of life? I'm pretty sure I'm not positive to the idea of multiply playable characters but I like to at least consider it. Maybe one outlaw and one sherfiff in a small town? Playing on the both sides of the law. Just an idea!

Time period. We need to go futher back in time. 1899 is of course closer to the wild west than 1911 but its still in the dying years. I would like to go back to the 1880s where it still was wild in the west. Famous people like Jessie James, Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hicock all lived during this period and even if Rockstar never would use their names it would be amazing to meet characters based on those legends.

And last but not least the geographical setting. Hertlands and the south was fun but its time to go back to the roots. The real west and the frontier. Maybe its time to leave New Austin but we need a new vast desert, some muddy lifestock towns and the open prairie. Im thinking a map streching from Arizona/Texas and up north to Montana and North Dakota. We'll get the Arizona desert, Texas plains, Colorado mountians, Utahs monument valley (could it be more western??) and Montanas open fields. We could get towns ispired by Tombstone, Deadwood, Santa Fe etc. There would also be old trails like the Santa Fe, Trail of tears etc that could be in the game and not to forget the transcontinental railroad passing through. The limit is endless in my opinion!

And now we should just wait 5 to 10 years to get the answer 😂

Could be very good to see the golden age of Western and be able to explore familiar places from the other two. But i think Rockstar will choose to create a totally new story with new characters, and that's why it will probably not be called Red Dead "Redemption" but maybe something else. I say that because Red Dead Online isn't called Red Dead Redemption Online.

I feel like the "Redemption" story belongs to John Marston/Van Der Linde Gang, and i hope Rockstar is gonna create a total new world. Maybe we'll be able to encounter familiar faces. I don't see Rockstar making another prequel of a prequel, could be original and interesting, but as you see, Rockstar isn't known to use the same characters a lot between games.

But we'll have to wait a VERY long time until we see anything.

yes i know the next red dead is a long way off. but i really cant wait until we get it. im sure it will be set further back in the golden age of the west. i would like to see the van der linde gang again. but only as a cameo. like we could see arthur dutch hosea susan. and maybe a couple more. maybe we could be allies with them and do a job with them. but they should not be the main focus. just a cool little cameo and maybe some more backstory for them.

i would love it if there was some more civil war stuff in there. like our protagonist is a confederate vet. although i doubt it will happen since rockstar made the southerners as the bad people in rdr2. i also hope we go further west. i liked rdr2s map. and it did have some western feels. but it was not super far out west. i would like to see new mexico, arizona, nevada, and even a little california. i have seen a lot of westerns in san francisco. so i think if rockstar wanted to do another big city like saint denis. they should do sf. there is so much potential for that. plus rockstar could do san fierro easter eggs. after that i think we should get a new mexico territory. not the us state i mean mexico the country. it should border nuevo paraiso to the west. it would also be nice to get some references to old locations. like saint denis or valentine stuff like that.

as for weapons im sure we will have a lot of the same guns already in the game. although i will miss my semi auto and mauser pistols. but im sure there is a lot of guns that they can add. other than that there is so much more potential to this series. and i look forward to the day that we can have a new game in this amazing series.

I don't think it's needed. The entire story of Redemption is told, if they want to continue on with Red Dead, call it something else. They've pretty much already worn the western genre thin and done everything they could. Every environment type has been done well. We've gotten the full spectrum of character archetypes. Red the virtuous bounty hunter, John the reformed outlaw, and Arthur the pure outlaw. To me there's not much left to be said in the western setting, at least the way Rockstar says it. And with Dan gone, meh I'd really prefer they not mess with it.

If they had to do another Western I'd like something close to what you're saying. Late war or just post war, and really sell the Leone spaghetti western thing like Revolver did but in an open world setting. Personally I'd rather see them move on to a different romanticized cultural figure/period. Like people have joked forever about a 'Peg Leg Redemption' pirate game. Hell they could take  the medieval game they were working on and make a Red Dead Dark Ages or something.

The period of the so-called indian wars and a variation of the epic story-arc of the Blueberry comics would hands-down be my first pick.

The Blueberry albums masterfully merges elements from the John Ford westerns, the Sergio Leone westerns and the pro-indian western stories from the 1970s (among other things). A rebellious Southern abolitionist protagonist riding in the Union cavalry after the civil war, clashing with the military brass going rouge and ending up on the side of the Apaches. A lot of side-storys, including Blueberry's stint as a sheriff in a sleepy little town and an epic hunt for a hidden treasure. Fast-paced and atmospheric adventures in, among other things, Grand Canyon and Mexico as well as snowy mountains plus a string of colorful antagonists and a charming (and very rocky) love story. And the Blueberry comics have nothing less than stunning visuals (drawn by Giraud/Moebius) and incredible character designs.

giraud_blueberry_stardom94.jpg

The Comanche comics, drawn by Greg, about the ranch Tripple-6 could also serve as a grand inspiration (Red Dust is probably my all-time favorite gunslinger).

I sincerely hope it's set a good few years before RDR2. Please no more Van Der Linde Gang or anyone related to them in any way shape or form.

Personally, I'd like the story to centre around a corrupt Lawman (who we play as). A charming, corrupt, although at times sympathetic, rootin' tootin' son of a bitch. A heavy presence of Native and Mexican NPC's some of whom will be integral to the story. Ex Civil War generals looking to carve out areas of the west all for their own gain, which you aide them in. A young outlaw who is your mortal enemy, continually foils or attempts to foil your plans. In typical Red Dead fashion you die and continue the story as in this instance that young outlaw. Who must now navigate through the consequences of the killing of which we would have put in place as the Lawman character.

Obviously I'm loosely basing this around the story of Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid

Hell, maybe the young outlaw could be a Mexican, Rockstar could then base this character around that of Gregorio Cortez! Again this would be loosely based around Gregorio Cortez.

I think they would have to go back in time to the 1860s-1870s. Indian wars and all that. Post RDR1 the wild west was pretty much done and WW1 was about to start. So not many options there anymore.

I actually thought about playing as young Dutch in RDR1. It would be interesting to see what led to him becoming the madman he was in the later games.

To go back in time with new story and characters, and a map that is twice the size of Redemption 2's at minimum. Setting wise, we will be moving further west and north west, beyond New Austin. It'd be a map that is a re-imagination of Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, Oregon and Idaho, including Los Angeles, San Francisco and Portland.

I wish we can get it for the PS5 generation, but it's doubtful given how much time R* is taking with their releases. We'll be lucky to get a small game beside GTA 6.

I just hope we get a character who can be good as well as bad. A bit like Clint Eastwood's character in the Leone movies. A story where the player can choose to be on the side of the law or to live the life of an outlaw. The problem I have with John and Arthur is that it feels wrong to play them as a ruthless killer. It just doesn't fit the story.

I’d love for them to go back probably 30-40 years. Have a young Rains Fall as protagonist and tell the story of the Natives. A LOT happened in the early 1860s that would make for great story telling

I feel like the downfall of the RDR2 story (for me) was it had to adhere to an ending we already knew. There was no freedom in it and it felt linear at times because no matter what we knew it had circle back to John getting off that boat in Blackwater in 1911.

If an RDR3 happens (yeah I know revolver exists) then I personally would like to have the story another few years back, if not near the end or in the middle of the Civil War. There's a lot of story to be told, and I love the weapons of that era. Playing a black guy fighting with the Confederacy would be an interesting juxtaposition to put the player in, and something I think Rockstar could pull off perfectly. Your antagonists/bosses are set at the beginning, and the story is a man fighting because he's told to, otherwise he won't be free. And that's not saying I'm a lover of the south or anything, but I think there's a story there.

Edit: nvm I'm wrong about the fighting with the Confederacy part. Imagine playing a guy working for them out of slavery, then fighting for both you and your family's freedom. Maybe not Rockstar enough though.

This topic has come up before and I'm generally in the camp that the existing character arc and base is played out.

I posited an idea of doing sort of an earlier time period of Western exploration--think Oregon Trail meets Lewis & Clark. I'd love to see something that maintains the rugged exploration theme with new characters, storylines, etc.

Either way, R* has excelled at this genre so I just don't see them abandoning the overall theme given the financial success and massive fanbase here.

Red Dead Redemption III ≠ Red Dead IV

I think the Red Dead Redemption series is intrinsically tied to the Van Der Linde Gang and the decline of the Wild West, the story of which is pretty much told. A Red Dead IV, focusing on a different type of story (revolution, renegade, rebellion) with a new cast would be what I would want. A Red Dead set in the mid 1800s would be an interesting contrast more similar to a typical Spaghetti Western, where we could deal with the Civil War, the height of the Indian Wars, Utah Expedition, etc. I would have the map be set in roughly this area -

San Francisco, Salt Lake City, and Denver could all be featured as major settlements.

I think they will make one more RDR game. RDR 1 & 2 were about the last few years of the gang, theres still entire chapters of the gangs story to be told. The most interesting scenario for me would be to play as a young Dutch before he formed the gang - would be cool to see what led up to him forming the gang and how he met Arthur and Hosea, as well as learning more about his motivations - the game would then play out over the course of time and during the peak of the old west when the gang was as it's strongest, culminating in the infamous Blackwater Massacre that there are still so many questions about.

Theres also the relationship between Dutch and Colm O'Driscool to explore, it would be cool to see how their bitter rivalry started as well as playing through key points such as Dutch killing his brother and Colm killing Dutches girl. The map could could be extended west and north-westwards from New Austin to include locations based on places like Utah, California, Nevada, Colorado etc. Honestly theres so much potential here, it's baffling how people can say theres nothing left for the series.

Thinking way ahead here but there could perhaps even be an epilogue where we play as Dutch during the last moments of RDR1 just to see things from his perspective. For me Dutches story has the potential to be even more engaging that that of John and Arthur.

Red Dead Revolver II

"Killing men is a strange kind of fame." - Landon Ricketts, 1911.

The Civil War is long over. The Gold Rush is a distant memory. The golden age of the Wild West is in its death throes, but it ain't over just yet. The land is savage, but people still have hope for life in the West. You play as an older, wiser and remorseful Red Harlow, who has settled in a town after laying down his guns after a decade-long prosperous bounty hunting career. Violence begets violence, however, and sooner or later trouble finds the retired gunslinger again.

The map will be west of Ambarino and north of the Redemption Mountains, split across multiple states and regions based on Nevada, Utah, California, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming and Washington. A lot of the characters from The Noblest of Men, and a Woman show up again, as does a younger, steadfast Landon Ricketts. We also put faces to the names Jack Hall and Otis Miller. The game does not feature Dutch Van Der Linde, Arthur Morgan or John Marston, but if you look hard enough maybe you'll find a few nice surprises.

Obviously, the next game should go further into the past. Landon Ricketts is the most obvious choice for a protagonist, and I think it would be really cool to give the player the chance to shape what kind of man he was. That being said, with RDO as a live service, and people taking the bait and paying for it to this day, I really don’t see another game being made until the generation AFTER next gen is right around the corner.

Not that I dislike or disagree with any of the ideas presented, because all of them are good ideas in my opinion...

But (as mentioned above) the life of Landon Ricketts.

I would imagine that he would make the most sense because it could ultimately end in Blackwater exposing the truth behind the robbery.

Also, consider that we know from RDR1 that Landon has the Dead Eye ability.

He recognizes that John does as well, and teaches him to control it.

In my opinion this makes him the most favorable character as a protagonist.

Edit...

Scratch that.

It would have to end with Landon in Mexico.

...but still expose the Blackwater robbery.

I did at one point hope that we would get some DLC that covered this very subject.

...but I've since given up hope on that idea.

So maybe in rdr3

This would also leave them the option to do a part 4 because we know Jack also had Dead Eye ability from the end of Red Dead.

So, who knows...

anything's possible.

Rdr3 could be about Dutch and how he started the gang or maybe something different. The next red dead game doesn’t have to be another red dead redemption.

I'd personally love them to go in a completely different direction, and have the next game set during the Civil War. Call it Red Dead Reb or something. Playing an outlaw during this chaotic period, stuck between both sides, witnessing huge battles, would be pretty amazing.

Having the whole west would be amazing; 1860s.

There would be so much variety, with the scoarching deserts of the south west, the beaches in California, the Grand Canyon, The mountains in Colorado, the snowy plains of Wyoming.

Personally feel done with the wild west. Especially with the Van de Linde arc.

Would love to see something set in the La Confidential era. Obviously we got L A Noire but that was very linear...but I loved that environment.

Red Dead was John's and van der linde gang story. And they concluded it. Can't see any more games in the series. But maybe I'm wrong.

I can't lie, I conceptually like this idea, even though I've posited the idea of going in a totally different direction. Having some tangential connection o the original story is a good idea and would anchor it to the canon of it all.

When I mentioned the Oregon Trail/Lewis & Clark mashup thing (predating the entire RDR timeline), I can also see how geographically SO many other pioneer stories could be interwoven into this concept. Given how @Strange Manhas chronicled an immense amount of nuanced but historical context to RDR2, I'd certainly appreciate this sort of angle.

And geographically, it'd just be gorgeous.

I still wanna see the Van Der Linde gang, mainly cause there still seems to be so much back story.

Arthur talks about going through Nevada with Javier at some point, he mentioned hitting Texas, and robbing a bank with Uncle & Bil near Canada.

If they don't, I'd love to see a game set during the Civil War like the Good, the Bad & the Ugly.
