Coyotes and Bison

Can someone explain how a 3 star coyote hit with a (bolt action rifle) head shot manages to survive yet a scuffed shot on a bison results in an instant kill?

I don't know how many of my perfectly clear deer headshots have missed.

I believe it's the 'accuracy' statistic activating, turning otherwise well aimed shots into crap.

Wait, you've seen a bison in the online game?  ;)

They seem REALLY rare, with lessened animal spawns.

My camp happened to spawn on the edge of their grazing area in the Heartlands.

R* nerfed aim mechanics especially the varmint rifle.  The bolt action definitely has been affected.  It was done due to complaints by players...that griefers were one shotting them...griefers unaffected...hunting is worse though.

Still easy to see in Great Plains and Heartlands, in my experience.

Many players being around f*ck up the spawns, but that happens everywhere.

From the beginning coyotes have been very challenging kills.
Small and fast a coyote is hard to hit when they are running.
Then there is the factor of their magic armor that often includes heavy armored helmets.
Sniper with high velocity and head shots will work, sometimes.

R* has nerfed weapons power and accuracy, especially the varmit rifle.
A big problem also is hit detection and lock on in auto aim as sometimes both can be very poor.
No surprise is that lobbies that are working well also have better weapons performance.

Working well: using a varmit rifle i can down 3 Heron in flight with one shot each in seconds
Working poor: poor lock on and hit detection as i fire off many shots to down each Heron.

Working well: combat with npc's is normal lock on and weapon fire rate.
Working poor: lock on seems to push aim away and not towards npc's, npc have magic powers that slows players weapons fire rate.

Overall when working well most animals are somewhat easy one shot kills in auto aim and with the right weapon.
However coyotes and fox are small but need high power to down. Sometimes it seems more power than to down a big bison or moose.

Me too, and I killed 3 bison with one shot just the other day. It went straight through the head of one, then through the head of another, then into the side of a third.

The first two died instantly and the third bled out.

Why are you aiming at the head? Go for the boiler room: heart and lungs.

Small target, the head.

Speaking of aiming and birds, I had no idea how good I had it on the PS4 with its aim-assist/auto-aim; birds were a no-brainer.

On the PC, birds actively dodge your shots (drastically changing direction). Birds IRL do not fly like that--I watch them when I go walking; they'll move up and down a bit, but not completely change direction mid-flight.

Cute, R*; real cute.

I'm talking about perfectly centered on the head, red dot, stable aim and the deer's not moving, and it still misses.

Then I have to compensate for it's bounding run and get a head hit finally after 3 or 4 bounds, so it's definitely not range messing up the first shot, since the actual hit is much farther away.

It's the game assigning an automatic miss some times.

Having shot several whitetails with a 22lr in the head I can confidently state that the target is small and has the capacity to move at just the wrong time for your perfect shot.

Do you guys not use dead-eye when hunting? Just aim above the animal's head, activate dead-eye and move the cross-hairs over the animal's head to get a mark. Then fire....

You will NEVER miss.

Once you get it down you can easily do it from horseback while chasing a jumping deer.

Often with deadeye it gives me multiple shots, and that will ruin the carcass.

I've just got used to shooting without deadeye, I'm reluctant to use it  unless the NPCs are moving fast. (on PC BTW)

You just have to move the cross-hairs across the head fast.
